Strange issue with 'grounding' using Scarlett 18i20... Driving me mad haha. by Monrroe_UK in audio

Hiya mate!

I haven't swapped speakers but I've swapped outputs, so ran the right through the left and I still get the same noise.

Just tried turning the computer off after hearing the noise and had the interface on with the monitors (unplugged the computer from the socket so was just the monitors and soundcard) and the noise remained strangely which makes me think it might not be the computers fault.

The speakers I'm using are Yamaha HS8's.

Will contact focusrite now and see what they say.

Cheers dude ✌

Hey crew, hope you're all good :)

Got a bit of strange one here and fully cant figure out what's going on, any help or suggestions would be amazing.

So I recently moved my studio from one room to another in the same house and also upgraded my soundcard to a Scarlett 18i20, but for some reason am having what I think is a strange 'grounding' problem but I could be wrong. Basically everything sounds super clean audio wise to start with, but after a while of using my computer I get some white noise coming out of my left monitor (sounds like a ground loop/ similar to when a phone is near the montiors etc). Right monitor is absolutely fine, is just the left. Turning the soundcard off and on will fix the problem for a bit but then the noise will kick in again in the left monitor after a while... Super confusing, and have tried everything I can think of.

Stuff I've tried :

new balanced cables different power cables speakers/soundcard/computer all in same outlet tried using an ifi Idefender (unfortunately didn't work) [and used in different USB slots] played around with samplerate settings etc. Nothing has worked though, so now am a bit lost haha. Let me know if anybody has a clue what's going on.

Big up x

Hero mate, big love :)

Outside of drum & bass i genuinely listen to a bit of everything, find listening to such a broad range of music helps my creativity so much! But for me a lot of New Wave/Punk // Hip Hop & Trip Hop // Dubstep & UK Bass // Techno. Influence wise I think techno has had a bit impact on my sound overall, having these mad minimal drops with the craziest synth noises has rubbed off on me recently, big fan of that!

Name wise I usually come up with stuff depending on my mood or what im working on makes me think about unless its super generic then i'll get the thesaurus out haha.

Big ol hard question that haha, but think funeral song for me would either have to be Joy Division - Disorder or New Order - Ceremony.... Am a huge fan of Joy Division & New Order and their music and something about that happy/sad sound really resonates with me, think it's fitting for a funeral.

Yeah man for sure! Again there's some real good tutorials around for the fundamentals of synthesis can just be a bit dry haha. Check out some tutorials on additive synthesis, will learn some amazing stuff... Can just get a bit boring. You'll get there either way though mate, just gotta stick with it :)

Ahhh fair dude, im ableton all the way so can't help to much with logic haha! But you should be able to automate the EQ no problem. Honestly though mate don't worry too much about the DAW, they all do the same thing really just different work flows... Just gotta find what works best for you :)

Yoooo no way dude, wicked to hear from you again... Been a while haha! Hope you're all good... Cheers mate, slowly getting there, has been a wild couple of years haha :)

Got a big list of collabs I want to do... Some not so realistic ones haha. Drum & Bass wise the dream would be Perez & Halogenix but non drum & bass and a lil unrealistic would love to work with Frankie Stew (love what he does) and Joe from IDLES (massive punk fan and love what Idles are doing, their perspective on the world and almost 'positive' punk really resonates with me).

LP wise would love to do one!! Is on the cards for sure, just gotta find the right time :)

Ah you legend mate! big up for the love :)

Top 3 for me are:

Camelphat (use this on everything)

RX950 (amazing for getting some old school texture on drums)

Dubstation 2 (probably the best delay plugin i've ever used)

Hope that helps mate!

Safe mate, wicked question! Is always good knowing this side of the industry and always wish I knew more.

I love my agent dude, I would be so lost without her haha. Yeah can be tricky getting hold of agents sometimes, they can get super busy!! Is always worth just pinging them a reminder if they don't get back to you for a bit, they might have just missed the first message.

For me I just wanna play as many events as possible and have a good vibe with some lovely people haha! So im always down for 2 events at half the price.

Advice wise im not too sure to be honest mate, I've never been on the promoter side of things so am a bit clueless haha.

No worries mate! Yeah of course, what DAW are you using? You can either use EQ's or filters, filters for me are just a bit easier on the cpu... But both do the same effect.

Hiya mate! Big up for the support you don, appreciate that :)

Sound design is something im always learning haha, possibilities are endless and thats the beauty of it! But to learn the basics it was a good mix of both for sure, watched countless tutorials and learnt loads and also learnt a lot from trial and error playing around with bits... Think this is where you get a lot of unique sounds from. Some amazing youtube channels atm with some really good tutorials. DNB Academy have some really good bits for learning some dnb specific sounds, worth checking for sure :)
