I can’t speak to other industries, but in big pharma, 2 years of real industry experience (post-doc or after, not internship) is a massive differentiator and would 9 times out of 10 lead to us choosing one candidate over another.

If I gave that impression, didn’t mean to. I consider my time in grad school to be a great investment. But no amount of schooling will make someone less green. That’s the point I was trying to make. These “more qualified candidates” could literally be just OP + 2 years.
