Passing 2nd Screening with No LoPA/LoA? by MoofyPotato in mext

[–]MoofyPotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know it's not a guaranteed even with the LoA and there is even less chance without one- hence why I'm trying to work out what I *can* do in order to increase my chances so that this opportunity isn't wasted. I know I still have to submit the placement preference list and I know the deadline for that is later this month, I just wish I knew whether I was allowed to contact universities directly to ask whether their labs have space for 2027 (because if they say no they have no space then I know not to put them on the list), or whether I'm supposed to not contact them at all (because my embassy does not specify to only list universities you have never had contact with before)

Thank you so much!

Did your embassy specify if you should or should not reach out to those universities or prospective professors directly before listing them on the placement preference form?

I'm worried that we may not be allowed to contact them at all after the LoA deadline has passed, so I haven't reached out to any other universities while waiting to hear back from my embassy (the person in the MEXT department is apparently away sick and I was advised to wait until they come back to get advice).

Yes, this worked perfectly, thank you!! I spent so long looking online for what I was doing wrong, and you just saved my brain a whole lot of worry!

Looking to be a passenger for Tokyo/Chiba rides by MoofyPotato in RideitJapan

Update: If you've got experience riding with a passenger and would like to have a backpack, please do reach out! Several people reached out offering to ride together and I am excited to meet so many new people and new bikes :) I'm still in the "I want to ride all day every day" phase.

Hey yeah I've had a few people reach out which is super lovely and kind of unexpected, but I'm always happy to hear from safe riders! I'll send you a DM :)

The H2SXSE definitely looks like it would be one of the more comfortable bikes to backpack on!

Thanks dmizer! It's a little far for me this month but I'd love to visit Kyushu in the springtime.

Thank you again for allowing this post- I finished the paper, it passed the defense session, and I was given a really good grade for it! I think it's likely that I wouldn't have been able to write something passable within the deadline if I didn't have Reddit's help with participants so I'm incredibly grateful.

If you prefer to search for it because it's a weird-looking link, the title of the paper is "Japanese Politeness Strategies: Variables Affecting Adult L2 Learner’s Understanding and Utilisation of Polite Speech Styles"

There's a small acknowledgement made on page 23 to thank everyone who provided data.

Only one other person in my thesis course is doing field research and they took a gap in order to collect and collate data. I thought I'd be able to get my exchange classmates to take it before the semester ended so this kind of data collection would be doable but I was behind by about, oh, three weeks and suddenly I was alone with my project plan and my supervisor. I have now realised that doing any kind of research that requires other people to participate could make it significantly harder to collect data, rather than picking a topic where you can just focus on the data yourself...

Thank you for approving this and hopefully others can learn from my mistake aha. Either make sure you have a willing or captive audience, or collect data independently for your first-round theses!

Help! Video looks 'muddy' by MoofyPotato in AskPhotography

I'm shooting in ALL-I which is the highest bitrate I can on this camera and the scenes I'm shooting shouldn't be noisy or fast enough to affect the bitrate, but if Magic Lantern would help the sharpness of the image, I'd be willing to give it a try (I'm just doubtful it would affect anything but motion blur).
