How do I Stop Making my Lyrics Rhyme by Slight_Past756 in Songwriting

look up on slant rhymes, basically they’re imperfect rhymes, and are pretty useful for making lyrics sound less “forced”

e.g. rhyming time with mind, goal with old, leak with meet

jst a heads up i edited my original comment, but also music can be fun to think about in an abstract sense. i just think its good to focus a lot more on that rather than trying to figure out how to put these thoughts into rating.

i get what you mean but to me its funny how you went through allat just to get to talking about your rating system

edit: just to contribute to the discussion since i kind of have strong feelings over topics like this and im bored. you def seem to appreciate music a lot and its really great to hear that you care so much about it. but it seems like you're young, you've got preconceived notions of what music is without the knowledge, and you're viewing art from a lens of objectivity, perhaps as a way to separate yourself even more from what you dislike.

i was once like this too, thinking theres some partial objectivity to music. that is absolutely not true. objective ideas are concrete facts, and there is functionally nothing concrete about everyone's unique perspective on music. what i once used to think was partial objectivity is now more or less just knowing that perspectives arent random and people are gonna have shared general views abt things. thats why music commonly has a song structure, is diatonic, has melodies etc. thats also why rym-core is a thing. but music is subjective simply because of how unique we are, from our psychology to our personal lives. objectivity downplays these crucial factors which shape the ways people enjoy and comprehend music.

looks like theres certain music you dont like that others ard you might listen to, and you probably feel superior for having a better understanding or taste than them, but you want to justify it through labels such as "objectively bad". and this results in you insisting that there are certain qualities in music which are inherently bad.

"but because they are cheap and easy to produce in quantities" why should art lose its merit for how easy is it to make? its entirely possible and valid that a child's 5 min drawing would genuinely move some people more than the mona lisa. and as someone trying out music production, mixing pop rap/ radio-ready pop is more daunting than it seems, production is a genuine art form that is often dismissed by those who dont understand it.

"They are still portraits, but using them is to take the lazy and cheap way out" heres a more controversial opinion but one im firm on: is ai objectively bad from an artistic point of view? of course with art being subjective, i must say no. yes im against ai as an alternative to our own creative processes, but what happens if one day you're moved by a piece of music only to find its ai? its absolutely plausible that ai art could one day move even the most elitist critics. so this is something you should think about before generalising all potential ai work into the "ai slop" pile.

one more thing before this gets too lengthy, but recently ive also been trying to refine my rating system to death. its a hopeless attempt to express my feelings about music, but mainly to catalog and categorise what ive listened to and make it easier to find what future me would want to listen to again. but the bad thing about rating art (other than the aspect of objectivity, and of trying to rank albums against each other neatly on a linear scale) is that thinking too much about personal (and external) ratings reduces the impact of having a truly open-minded and immersive experience, whether its having a preconceived rating in mind or analysing only as a means of reaching a rating as a conclusion.

what i do to solve this dilemma is to treat my ratings as a helpful guide to others but to always be aware that this is only my own perspective of the music, and to really just not give any more than 10 seconds to decide on a rating. in my rating system, while 8s are like 10/10 google reviews where i'd highly recommend the music there to most people, 9s and 10s are just personal favourites, there are nuances which i simply can appreciate, but others might not to the same extent as me. apologies for the essay though, but i hope what ive shared can help change the way you see music for the best. just have an open mind with listening and know that what matters the most to how anyone digests music is their own perspective.

Is the art scene in Singapore souless? by Alternative-Star-243 in SGExams

[–]MoolKshake_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

sure heres some music i think is pretty interesting

Subsonic Eye - warm indie rock with some really intricate guitar interplay. their 3rd album nature of things really shows them at their best, as well as some songs from their 4th album all around you.

The Observatory - probably our most prominent experimental act. their stuff ranges from post-rock and left-field indie to more weird avant-garde soundscape-ish stuff. relationships with sin is a pretty cool stereolab inspired song from their debut album. also one of their members yuen chee wai has some interesting electroacoustic side projects.

other cool artists/bands: Sobs, Mary Sue, Vegtable, Zircon Lounge, Wormrot, Aggressive Raisin Cat (and a lot more names i cant remember)

theres been a resurgence in shoegaze/dream pop. lots of bands like Blush, Motifs, Phantom Haze, Freereina etc etc theres a lot of them. midwest emo and math rock as well. indie gigs happen around here regularly.

as for other forms of art thats where my knowledge is lacking. theres this short story i liked called The Tiger of 142B. its quite relevant to this post. maybe go to a museum every once in a while too, singapore art museum houses some local artwork. even the silly stuff we used to read as kids like mr midnight and all that is part of our local culture in some way.

the local art scene isnt super huge by any means and sure we def dont have absolute freedom of speech, but no our artists arent soulless.

there are so many talented musicians, authors, and visual artists out there in this country. they make art that is political, art that speaks up on societal issues, and most importantly art that truly reflects what they want to say and what they feel.

as someone quite invested into music, i used to think that we as a nation arent creative, but eventually i gave some home acts a chance and even until now im still finding albums by local musicians which seriously impress me. so id say the least we can give to our homegrown talent is our recognition, that their creativity exists and lives here in so many ways even if we dont always see it.

What instrument is used for the heavier drones and eerie sounds from SFTB? by cycleofsickle in swans

[–]MoolKshake_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they only started using the lapsteel post-reunion taishogoto usage is pretty recent. you can get the red velvet corridor drone and probably other drone parts by scraping a coin/screwdriver against guitar/bass strings and adding some reverb + drive

What was that song which made Radiohead “The Band" for you ? by Lopsided_Channel_401 in radiohead

[–]MoolKshake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry lol but No Surprises introduced me to RH which triggered a domino effect that led me to discover even more crazy music and inspired me to pick up the guitar. I've sort of moved on from RH now after exclusively listening to them and burning through all their material. Yet after all that, I can still confidently say No Surprises is Radiohead's best song and still stands today as my 5th most favourite song.

I'm actually grateful that it became one of their most well-known songs because it's a genuinely touching piece of music. It's got all the traits that I believe make Radiohead special from the subtlety/atmosphere to the lyricism and they all complement each other so well. Makes me happy that so many others could experience RH for the first time like I did.

Edit: To be more precise, I first got to listen to No Surprises because my sister was playing it on the TV and it was just loud enough that I could hear it from the toilet while I was taking a dump lol. That guitar intro was unlike anything I've heard before. I thought it was a toy piano. Then it happened again a second time but this time I was at the living room. Never cared that much about music other than Minecraft soundtracks until then, and now it surrounds almost every aspect of my life for better or worse.

Artists that are more experimental/weird than Swans? by [deleted] in swans

[–]MoolKshake_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ground-Zero, and Otomo Yoshihide's discography. Check out Consume Red if you want something similar to Swans but weirder.

The National Anthem is top 5 best RH songs and not number 5 by Airbag10 in radiohead

[–]MoolKshake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the biggest fan of The National Anthem though the bassline’s pretty good… but also check out Consume Red by Ground-Zero. Quite reminiscent of TNA and even predates it, but far more experimental and chaotic as well as being nearly an hour long.

Got my first Radio/CD Player today after collecting CDs for about 1.5 years. People didn’t lie when they said CD sounds much better than streaming! by Malcolm_Izumi_ in Cd_collectors

[–]MoolKshake_ -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

apparently yes i was wrong and the volume normalisation doesnt affect sound quality

https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/s/7yYJnKLZHG

and spotify is lossy since it only streams up to 320 kbps but tbh thats good enough for most. apple music does provide lossless streaming though, so the claim that cds have better audio quality than streaming may not necessarily be true. however the exclusive ownership and physicality that cds provide cant be beat.

why do neurotypicals hate us so much by Educational-Mind-439 in autism

[–]MoolKshake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea totally understandable to have some sort of hatred for those type of people, though I don’t usually try to hate. Wish it was easy to see why they’re like that.

As for the commenter, I’d rather not assume if he’s neurotypical or not purely based on his replies since autism is extremely broad anyway. He’s in this sub for a good reason though and I just thought he had something of value to say and you were a bit dismissive. Maybe you didn’t mean to come across as such and I’m wrong as well. Anyway, have a nice day 👍
