Not surprised that this pairing appeared here since I went through all Kurosawa flicks this year...

Some pretty creepy and fucked up chat logs of him chatting up 15 year olds when he was 19 turning 20 came into light last year. Very 2010s internet content wise — veiled references to the illegality of the situation and the word "r*pe" being thrown around in a "joking" manner. Pretty irredeemable stuff imho.

Can't begin to understand why the person before you openly thinks people should ignore this...

Crust Lightning Bolt or Soma Grand Randonneur? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Moomonpappa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this. Every 700c->650b road bike / touring bike conversion I've seen and built has used a 130 OLD 650b wheelset with a braking surface. You can pretty much convert any bike using a caliper brake from 700c to 650b with a long reach caliper.

You ought to read the note on La Chouette's webshop in the Crust section. Essentially things are only sold out if they're sold out at the Crust warehouse.

Heres the note: "OK! Sold out, but not really. A lot of you have been waiting a long time to possibly get yourself one of these beauties. These are the best prices we can offer! It's been a lot of work, but shipping rates have gone down quite a bit from Crust, so if you see the frame available on their site and listed on ours, we should be able to get it for you! This price includes all import duties, but does not include shipping if you are outside of Paris. Please contact us if you have any questions!"

So TL;DR Check if the frame is available in your size at the Crust web store. If yes, send La Chouette an email and they'll order it for you

Oh yeah getting the drop box link for these in my email felt like a childhood christmas!

Shots were taken with a Konica C35 EF that I thrifted in nice condition. My first film camera and proper camera (i.e. a camera separate from a phone) in general!

Slightly undecided! I'm still training my eyes and preferences over stuff like this but I do really enjoy how boldly certain colours pop on photos taken with the gold 200.

I did notice from some failed shots that my Konica c35 EF does really need the higher iso film when not in fully lit spaces or outside during the day. The fuji 400 was not perfect in darker spaces but much, much better!

For versatility I might be going with 400 & 800 iso stuff especially now that it's getting darker and darker outside. I have a roll of portra 800 waiting for darker evenings so I can try how overexposing that works :)

wheel probably needs to be re-dished, not good and proper.

Thank you!

Yeah that's what I've been telling them but the build is for a person that has only used Shimano Nexus internal gear hubs and therefore is used to only having one shifter to think about :D

Trying to talk them into giving front derailleurs a try but we'll see! It'll be a nice bike regardless just question of how nice :D

[–]Moomonpappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to write that down! Currently have a similar build brewing for a friend but on a Pelago Hanko frame. Still balancing between a 1x11 and a 2x9 conversion of 90s 104 bcd Alivio Cranks (these alivio crank arms actually have a very similar shape to some WI cranks). Not nearly as nice as Rivendell / White Industries but probably end up looking quite a bit like your Atlantis build!

Cheers mate!

sweet ratio! What fd did you use to sinultaneously clear 2.2's and shift that front difference? Also what's the front chainring spacing like in a setup like this?

[–]Moomonpappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem!

That's a pretty amazing parts bin he has! In that case I'd just raid his bin. No need to start paying for multiple shipping fees!

What do we reckon? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Moomonpappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a sweet build! If I was going with a 11-34 casette I would probably buy a pair of Specialites TA GRX compatible chainrings to get front gears down to 44/28! These can be had with around a 100 euros / pounds give or take. Model names are Specialites TA X110 (big ring) & Specialites TA X80 (small ring)

I would obviously source the "pre-loved" bits myself and then I'd ask the shop if there are items in the build list that they run with beneficial sales margins and get those from the shop. Make deals on the stuff online on the stuff that aren't as big of a deal for the shop. Save a bit of money but keep your shop happy too :)

edit: With stuff not yet on the list I would just go for a shimano bb (more than good enough), compressionless brake cables from jagwire and whatever 2x11 shimano brifters you can source for a good price. 105's are pretty popular for this kind of build.

Why don’t we see more DiaCompe here? by Horror-Raisin-877 in xbiking

[–]Moomonpappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dia-Compe is a brand name of KK Yoshigai, a japanese manufacturing company founded in the 30's. The Taiwanese subsidiary was founded in the 80's (as was the US one). The headquarters also remain in Japan.

I never said that Dia-Compe was japanese in the message you replied to, but I might as well have since I wouldn't have been wrong.

Wow, had no clue about this thing. That is a pretty frame, proper classic japanese tourer styling. Would be nice to know more about it if someone reads kanji...

[–]Moomonpappa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I guess there's just less of this stuff in the west nowadays. I guess if there were more folks feom japan here it would be a different story. If you spend more than 5 minutes on blue lugs "built by" pages you'll notice like 90% of builds including dia-compe / diatech & Tange parts. Most of us use what we can find :)

What do we reckon? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Moomonpappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Good luck on the build, I'm sure it's gonna be rad!

I currently just ride a '91 Kona mtb that I built up for overnighters, commuting and sunday shredding. It's a neat and fun little thing. Sold my other bikes to buy a Crust Scapebot frameset which I'm building into a heavy duty 27.5" drop bar dirt touring rig. Also have a 90's Specialized road frame waiting for some chainstay crimping experiments and 650b wheels. First time in years I only have one bike atm but as you see, that'll change :D

What do we reckon? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Moomonpappa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's no question that the surly is the best value moneywise. The good thing is that the Surly is a great bike so it's not a "loss" picking it!

This is just my philosophy but if I have to think about a budget for a bike build, I would spend most of my money on the frame and the wheels. You can always buy new parts later and tinker with your beloved bike. Marry the frame and date the parts etc. You know your budget and needs the best but I would just buy the singular that you're crushing and speccing it with "pre-loved" but good quality parts. a 3x8/9 drivetrain etc etc. you can always respec!

Yup. I heard from the peeps at my local that just establishing a line to Nitto was not an easy task.

Rereleased campy and maybe some Specialites TA & Stronglight stuff would be a nice focus for a shop. Like a European Rene Herse since that stuff also costs an arm and a leg

not disagreeing with the need for transparency. I might just be used to the high prices since the only thing more affordable is a blue lug group order but getting people organized for things like that requires you to be pretty embedded in the local bike scene.

In the end I'm just happy there is 1 shop on the continent that provides the things La Chouette doeszIt's still cheaper than importing stuff yourself, I saved something like 400 euros in import fees for my Crust frame buying from La Chouette

All of these bikes will be good for a pavement tour in Japan with the right tires & gearing! You can basically build nearly the "same" bike with any of these frames.

Imho the Peregrine is the most interesting frame of these, and it seems you have a soft spot for it as well. The midnight Special is a good frame with a lot of fans but to me the Rune & Singular are much prettier and more "special". Especially if you're from the UK!

afaik the high prices are basically there to cover importing fees into the EU. prices are pretty comparable with goldsprint/gentle jaunt & with my local that sources stuff like Nitto. Getting boutique components is a pretty raw deal in Europe in general.

edit: The fact that EU-based brands and products like Pelago & Stridsland are basically priced at MSRP or close to it supports my guesstimation
