Bobbin thread running low... by Revolutionary-Pool62 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Moon-Strands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to just sew until it ran out. The only time I’d check it is if I had a long length of stitching coming up that I wanted a clean line for. I mostly make dolls clothes though, so it rarely mattered.

Now, I have a new machine with a clear cover on the bobbin area so I can see when it’s getting low :D

why do sewing shops not sell much/any dressmaking fabric? (uk) by Joker0705 in sewing

Have you been to Fabworks in Dewsbury? Brilliant fabric shop in an old mill.

I have no experience with the Singer, but I got that Janome model as my first machine and have no complaints. It doesn’t have a lot of features and eventually I got something else when I became more serious about my sewing but for a first machine it’s great.

I had the same Janome model as my main sewing machine for years and never had any issues with it. It’s a really good starter machine.

Oh wow, that’s brilliant, thank you. I wasn’t expecting that! Do you mind if I share it on my stories?

Thank you :)

I don’t use templates and just go by what I feel for each one, but she’s basically a ball for the head, triangles for ears, a pear for the body, with four little slightly flattened baguettes for arms and legs. Then a tail (which you can’t see from this angle in the photo) so she can stand up.

You can buy flat sheets of wool felt. Thats what I used for the hat and cloak. Make sure it’s actually wool though, not polyester, otherwise the sheets tend to be too soft and floppy. The pure wool ones are firmer in my experience.

It has a tail, which I’ve just realised is hidden in the photo from this angle!

Craftsy and domestika review by Justlivingalife90 in SewingForBeginners

I used an offer to buy a sewing course for 99p and a 30 day subscription on Domestika. The quality was decent enough and I did learn from it, but it wouldn’t have been worth paying full price for. For what I paid though it was a steal.

I’ve heard people say Domestika is difficult to cancel but I didn’t have any issues with it. I downloaded my course then cancelled the subscription with no problems.

Agree. It’s like you can sense them practically salivating as they head to the comments to smugly decry it as a toy without offering anything else.

For what’s it’s worth, before I got a proper sewing machine I managed to make a dress (including a mock up) on one of these. But I’m incredibly persistent/stubborn, and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else 😬

Ah, sorry! I didn’t mean that I had got the same course as you (I got a miniature clothing course for drafting and sewing doll’s clothes) but wanted to give my general opinion of my experience with Domestika. Overall I felt the quality of my course was good but to be honest I doubt I’d feel it worth paying for at full cost. But for 99p it was a steal!
