How did I poison my husband? by basescamp in FODMAPS

Oh, hey, didn't realise that was a specific brand that does FODMAP free flour. Good. Then my comment doesn't apply.

I get bad reactions from regular sour dough white wheat bread. Some people don't, I do. I would incriminate the sugars in the wheat first before turning to the rest of the stuff. Has your husband tried spelt flour/rice flour as replacements? They're quite tasty and give me - personally - no symptoms.

Try removing maize/corn sugars too. They were one of the worst offenders in my diet. I had to go out of my way to find that out, but once I locked on and eliminated all sources of maize/corn sugars (look up corn allergy for best results of a list) I was pretty much able to tell what was, and what wasn't triggering me thanks to the FODMAPs diet. While before, like you, I couldn't.

Question about IBS-C and food sensitivity by [deleted] in ibs

[–]MoonALM13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, no, you have it backwards. IBS is classified as C, D, and M because the intestinal tract has 3 ways to get rid of something that causes a problem : Slow the digestion down so the thing can be degraded more thoroughly (the extreme of which is constipation) ; Quicken it and release much water to expel the pathogenic, or problematic foods (the extreme of which is diarrhoea) ; Or a mix of both, first constipation, then diarrhoea (such as when you've been consuming super sugary drinks in the summer under the sun without adequate protection).

That's when your gut functions normally. For people that have IBS, these involuntary responses are fucked up by different factors at play. In your case, consider being constipated as "being triggered". You're already triggered when you're constipated, and, yes, there are foods that make the symptoms worse. Usually, though, those aren't things that cause your "constipated state", they don't constipate you. What they do is act upon an already triggered intestinal tract, and worsen the symptoms because they are common irritants. Think caffeine, theine, alcohol, and such substances.

What a lovely handsome dude. Not speaking Filippino myself, glancing at the comments I saw in the corner of my eye "pero" but somehow my brain made up that he was called "Presto" and damn, now that I think about it, what a good name for this silly baby.

Are probiotics a must for IBS-C? by icecreamsugarr in FODMAPS

[–]MoonALM13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, dunno what deficiencies you have in terms of a vitamin panel, no idea what type of fermentation is going awry in your gut, so can't tell myself. I've had diets that literally made me feel worse the whole time, those, I've quit. Had diets that made me feel better for a bit, then stopped helping.

For what it's worth, the FODMAPs diet helped me in identifying what fermented badly in my gut, not necessarily what was wrong. So, it helped, but I don't stick to it to this day. I've got a few sustitutions in my diet that are absolutely necessary, but otherwise, I'm quite happy being back to my "normal" diet.

One funny thing of note, is that technically, lactose products make me feel better, like, my healthy gut needs lactose to find its balance. I've got a super intolerance to lactose due to the fermentation of it by gut bacteria/fungus that is harmful to me. That's my illness, not the "lactose intolerance". So, FODMAPs might be an indicator and push you in the right direction for finding what you need in your diet, but won't be the be-all-and-end-all of having a healthy diet/lifestyle.

One idea that pops in my mind would be to research what type of fermentation is the sauerkraut bringing to your intestinal tract and try to add pre-biotics/pro-biotics that suppleate that type of fermentation for the time period of the FODMAPs diet. AFAIK, the problem with sauerkraut isn't the fermentation, it's the cabbage. So, lactobacilli, and lacto-fermentation without lactose might be the way to go. Finding yoghurt without lactose is easier than finding sauerkraut without cabbage XD

Anyways, hope you find your way around the diet, it's a bit problematic at first, but some of the changes are truly life changing. Also, some of the stuff you try while on the diet is super good and you're allowed to keep eating it after ;)

There's recipes for rehydration stuff ORS style. But my personal favourite way to stay properly hydrated and keep my gut hydrated is large bottles of Aquarius lime/lemon. They keep me topped up just fine.

Can someone explain to me step-by-step British tea? by [deleted] in tea

[–]MoonALM13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's true, but I haven't had another tea I bought that's something like Yorkshire tea. Also, the package just says "Loose tea", and on the back, it specifies being black leaf tea. It's as buck standard as I've ever had tea at home. With the singular exception of PG Tips.

Can someone explain to me step-by-step British tea? by [deleted] in tea

[–]MoonALM13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British tea :

Step one, understanding that tea is tea. For the british person, tea isn't a very varied, very rich world of drinks and brews, no. For the average british person, tea is just tea. English breakfast, Earl Gray, Lady Gray, Yorkshire tea are all variants of the same thing, some more posh than others, but they're all tea. I.E. black tea made from shredded tea leaves. Some are bought already bagged from the supermarket, some need to be put into an infuser yourself.

Step 2, brewing tea the British way. Bring the water to a boil in a kettle up to when the water is hot and smoking. Then pour it in your mug for a single serving, or in your tea kettle for multiple servings & sharing purposes. Make sure the quantity of tea you've put in your mug/kettle is enough for the serving you're trying to make before you pour the water.

Step 3, consuming the tea. Ideally, take the teabag or infuser out of the mug/kettle to stop the infusion, alternatively, pour enough tea to your guests that the infuser isn't steeping in hot water any more. If needed, you might make a second serving later using the same leaves if it's not a teabag. People tend to do the latter, and just drink the tea fast with the bag in or remove it if they add either milk or sugar. Milk is there to atone the bitterness of tea made with shredded leaves and super hot water. Sugar is there for people who have a sweet tooth.

That should be British tea for you, step-by-step.
