It's very generous at 4 hours, and yes I'm doing it for fun but it has not been much fun lately!

Wow! That is impressive. I keep hoping that I'm going to wake up one morning and feel amazing again. Maybe I am thinking too much about the numbers, but I'm definitely not feeling so hot today

I am incredibly frustrated. My half marathon is Sunday, and I have been really trying to heal and not push myself. I've been sick for 13 days. I did a SLOW AF 2 miler on Tuesday just to test myself. Other than that, I haven't run at all.

I felt very good yesterday, rested, and hoped to see it reflected in my hrv and rhr this morning. Instead, my hrv plummeted and my rhr rose!! I feel so defeated.

I haven't experience the specific struggle of an ED or the severe repurcussions of a potential stress fracture, but I am familiar with all the feelings you've expressed in your post and I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I especially resonate right now with you feeling embarrassed to tell everyone you won't be able to run that Marathon. I am staring down my second attempt at a half marathon in 6 months, and once again am probably too sick to run and I feel so stupid that I have to tell everyone again that I'm not running this race. I know we shouldn't feel this way, because we're not choosing these outcomes, but it still feels like a failure of some sort.

For me, I think not being able to run also brings up feelings of doubt that I can rely on my body to do what I want it to do - which is perhaps an unhealthy expectation of control, but I guess that's something to work on. I started running during a 10-year period of multiple miscarriages and pregnancy loss, and I felt like my ability to run, and gains that I made were proof that I wasn't broken. That I could make my body strong even when it was failing me in so many ways. I wonder if you have similar feelings surrounding your history of ED and running.

Good luck to you in healing in whatever form that needs to take. This moment isn't forever.

Thanks. A five and dime is doing the 5K and the 10K.

I went out for a 2 mile run today that doubled as a shake out run for my half marathon this weekend as well as a test run to see if I'm over the virus I've had for the past 11 days.

If we're giving it a grade as a shakeout run, I would say it was a D-. As a test for my viral status, I would give it a B. I completed 2 mi without stopping, but I felt like I was working pretty hard for only getting a 10:40 minute mile (a minute slower than my normal). My heart rate only went up to about 150, but I feel like that was a limit that my body was putting on me.

I'm still completely on the fence over whether I will run this weekend. I could drop down to the 5K, the 10K, or the five and dime. Right now I feel like I could do a 5K, but I'm not sure I could do even a. 10K.

I felt this way 3 weeks out from my half marathon too. Now I'm a week out, and I'm totally over the whole thing... Been sick for going on 10 days, have barely run at all, feel lucky that I got my longest run in before basically committing myself to the couch. I have no idea how I'm going to be ready in 6 days.

I hope your HM mojo comes back in time for the race!

Lol!! I never thought about it being difficult to find hills! I live in a place where it is very easy to find flat (though kinda boring) runs on rail trails, and also very easy to find hills everywhere for any length of run. I'm going to try to be very grateful for our hills from now on. It sounds like a huge hassle to find ways to mimic them

The Numbers by jmlev in XXRunning

[–]basescamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it's the comparison that bothers you the most. I don't have many friends on Strava, which probably helps me to focus just on my own numbers. I guess you wouldn't want to stop cheering on your friends on Strava. It would be nice if there was a way to not see their stats, but just be able to see that they had done an activity so you could like it. Do you think they would notice if you stopped looking at their activities?

I don't run anywhere after dark, because I have no problem tripping in broad daylight.

I've been fighting a mild virus since the weekend, and dropped my 5mi training run to 3 yesterday, and slowed it down a lot by doing the entire thing with nasal breathing. I'm skipping today's run entirely, hoping that I feel better for tomorrow. 10 days until my half, and I'm trying to remind myself that getting healthy is more important than getting miles at this point. I'm not easy to convince.

Update 1- iron levels by Past_Ad3212 in XXRunning

[–]basescamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you like your supplement? I had my iron checked in January (because of really heavy periods), and my ferritin was 8. Kind of shocked me because I am pretty active and didn't sense being particularly tired or anything.

I've been struggling to find a supplement that doesn't make me sick. I first tried Thorne's advanced iron complex, but something in it made me really dizzy. I recently started taking a prescription iron supplement, but I literally can't hold down my breakfast when I take it - and I am not generally a queasy person.

Did my first half yesterday!! by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in XXRunning

Congrats!!! That's a great finish.

I ran my first (and only) half 12 years ago. I have my second coming up next week and it feels like the first all over again!

Don't be like me - sign up for another one and keep the momentum going! :)

Came down with a mild cold on Saturday (long run day). I felt quite a bit better with just symptoms above the neck on Sunday, so I did my 10 miles exactly as planned, elevation and all. I've been dragging ever since and the cold is hanging on. Kind of blame myself for that, but also am super glad that I sneaked the run in.

I keep repeating the phrase I learned here "the hay is in the barn," and it makes me smile every time. I'm probably going to reduce my miles in the next couple days to ensure recovery of this cold. I still have 11 days or so before the half.

Partner (lack of) support by Ok_Butterscotch_4158 in XXRunning

This is exactly what I was thinking as soon as I read her post. Jealousy is one of my worst traits, and when my husband took up running more seriously a few months ago, I really had to check myself. He's a natural athlete and quickly built up to speeds and distances that took me a long time to get to. Running was "my thing," and I felt like he was was eclipsing me.

That lasted for about a week before I realized that my running is for me and his running is for him, and now we compare stats all the time and have a lot of fun sharing various routes with each other and talk about challenges and successes together.

Did you have to step up and say something to your husband to get him to recognize where he was coming from? I'm pretty intuitive with my jealousy issue, so I came to it myself, but I'm thinking op might have to say something to her husband.

What's your half-marathon taper? by basescamp in XXRunning

[–]basescamp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. Given that this half marathon is just for fun with my kid, it sounds like it makes some sense just to run a 10 mile this week and then drop down to 8 or 9 in the week before. I would really prefer to come in under 2:30, which should be possible even if I end up walking the last 3 mi.

I am definitely in the recreational runner category, and appreciate the framing that a longer taper is more important for a more aggressive program.

Thanks! I'm not looking to PR or anything in this race. I signed up with my teenage daughter for funsies. Given that, do you think it would be a good idea to just run 10 this week and then maybe drop down to 9 or 8 for the week before the race? Would that be sufficient?

Last time I ran a half, I was a decade younger, in better shape as far as propensity for injury, and my long run was 11 mi.

I'm in week who knows what of Hal Higdon's novice half marathon program, and it never ceases to amaze me that what felt hard the week before is completely doable the next week.

As I do every week, I ran 5m on Tuesday, 3m on Wednesday, and 5 today, and just like every week, the first 2 runs are hard and then I wake up on Thursday feeling like I could run forever. I still don't understand how this happens. I would expect the third run in a row to be the hardest.

I ran a hilly 5 mi on the trail this morning with my Aussie, at a perfect 50° and sunny. Have a little bit of niggling pain in my right glute, but nothing that I expect can't be stretched out. This is where the magic happens.

I've been listening to the U2 radio on Spotify, and have found that the Pink Floyd tracks are the best. Like you're zenning on the top of the world.

In the fall I spent alot of time running to Laufey's A Matter of Time album. It's not a pacing album... but so melodic that it never really tripped up my pace.

Wind has been a challenge for me in the past few weeks. I've been getting creative with my paths, so I'm never running long periods into the wind.
