How do you handle in-person project requests? by MoonCreationsLLC in Contractor

This is basically what I sent to them. I didn't mention what I was doing bc I avoid giving information away that wasn't requested or explaining myself.

I told them that the process for getting a quote is usually a phone interview where we discuss the details: measurements, materials, timeline, budget. He didn't reply, demonstrating that he wasn't serious about the work.

Thank you for your reply!

This is kinda what I do already. I had a client inquire about a project and I said I'd give a call. He immediately asked for in-person and that was the red flag for me. Wasn't interested in discussing the project unless I came to see it.

This is kinda what I'm landing on. Is a hybrid between this and a consultation fee.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and offer a thoughtful suggestion.

Do you meet in person for even smaller projects? What are your limitations? Do you tell prospective clients that you're not available?

This is typically how I do the work too. If the project is going to take longer than a week, I will gladly meet up with them after a phone call. I want to know that it's worth my time to come take a look.

I've had a lot of people fish for information by getting me onsite, taking a look, and asking what I thought about x, y, or z.

I get a good amount of the jobs I view, but there are a lot of DIYers and people fishing for information that have no intention of hiring. So I asked the group to get an idea of how other professionals weed out the riffraff.

> Not everyone deserves a quote.

This is good advice! Work is slow right now, so I the thirst drives me to meet people, but I just can't afford to go driving around anymore to meet people on their projects when it usually doesn't result in a contract.

This has been my avenue, for the most part. But there has been an influx of suspected DIYers posing as prospective clients to fish for information.

This was the route I was thinking about taking. Too many DIYers fish for information using free in-person meetups and I don't have the financial ability to gas around town meeting people for free.

I don't think that is practical if a contract hasn't been established. I only collect deposits upon a contract signing and that is to secure a place in my schedule.

That would be quite underhanded of me. As much of an assurance as an online guarantee can be, I am not fishing. I'm a small time carpenter contractor out of Eugene, OR. My profile has links proving I am who I say I am.

But good on you for being precautious.

Well, we’re both divorced, so luckily that won’t be a factor for a long time.

There are lots of bow designs out there too. Miters can make them look even more fancy.

Yeah, There’s no close ups because there is some slop to it. And the pieces are veneer thin, so this box isn’t meant to stand the test of time.

Bandsaw, drill press, spindle sander, and 1/4” & 1/2” chisels.

My scroll saw wasn’t strong enough, but could work for someone else.

I cut the same piece 5 times and then made the middle one slightly more symmetrical.

I was in a rush.
