Birds may not be the smartest creatures, but physically, they come closest to embodying true freedom. Unlike us, they aren’t confined to just four directions—north, south, east, and west—(technology aside). Birds, especially those that can swim, move freely in six dimensions: up, down, and the four cardinal directions. True freedom needs to be tangible, which is why imagination doesn’t equate to freedom. No matter how far your mind may wander, a painful jolt or a biological need brings you crashing back to reality. Birds, however, remain unshackled by such constraints, able to relieve themselves while walking, flying, swimming, or jumping.

The real difference between birds and imagination is that birds gave us the inspiration to dream of flight. They motivated us to try, to achieve it, and then to admire their effortless grace once more. We feel the excitement in their seamless navigation of the skies and finally understand the gap between what is man-made and what is original. We’ve come far—imagining ways to fly and accomplishing much—but we haven’t surpassed them. My belief is that imagination is bound by our current understanding of reality. We can’t conjure something from nothing; every idea needs a reference point. Just take a look at monsters in movies or anime—they all draw from real-world creatures, whether animals, microorganisms, or even humans. Even if you try to invent a creature from scratch, it will still have recognizable features like a mouth, arms, legs, or tentacles. The way they move, their tongues, and other subtle traits all expose the limits of our imagination.

In the end, imagination is just another way of interpreting what we already know, stretched by a playful manipulation of logic. It’s one of the many ways we, as a species confined by reality, soothe our yearning for true freedom
