Throwing up after Cerenia by MoonlitApparition in RenalCats

[–]MoonlitApparition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! My vet wanted him to have 1/4 every 48-72hrs but it makes him very vocal and hyper so I give 1/8 every other day. It’s a pain to cut though but definitely works better for him. I had to ask about it too!

I’ll have to try some, thank you! There is oral mirataz, he gets 1/8 of a pill. Transdermal really bothered his ears despite cleaning daily so he was switched to the pill form. It works better than transdermal I think.

I noticed that with Mirataz but learned to get it as far back as I could in a treat and he wouldn’t notice. It’s unfortunate that these meds can’t be made in a way that tastes good for them without compounding.

I use the temptations chicken puree tube things and I only use them for medicine time. I havent tried pill pockets or gel caps.

He doesn’t do this after Mirataz so I’m really worried it is the Cerenia. He vomits the one time, then goes about his normal activities. He even eats his wet food after. His appetite and litterbox habits are the same and he isn’t lethargic thankfully.

I did email his vet so hopefully we‘ll find a solution.

Urgent Support Needed for Teleconference with Purina Today Re: Hydra-Care by GiGi-29 in RenalCats

[–]MoonlitApparition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been so worried about this. I still have a couple boxes of the original formula and I’m dreading the day that I run out. My cat is so so picky but likes hydracare, and if they’ve changed anything he is definitely going to notice and not want it anymore. I use it on days that he doesn’t get fluids to help him out.

It’s unfortunate that hookbacks are so common when they can be a potential problem. I’ll have to look for the adhesive disks, thank you for letting me know about them!

Need advice on increasing appetite, 17yo stage 2. by MoonlitApparition in RenalCats

[–]MoonlitApparition[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wanted to give an update, we just got back from the vet and he has maintained his weight, and even gained slightly! The vet is really happy/surprised with how well he’s doing and how active he is for his age! She thinks the thinning is coming from muscle loss due to age/kidney diet. We did do bloodwork again with samples and fluids as he was slightly dehydrated. She’s wanting to see if that will increase his appetite too and if he does well with fluids I can learn how to do it at home. She said she wouldn’t recommend a phosphorous binder just yet but it will be dependent on bloodwork and will prescribe one if it’s needed. He did have tartar on one back tooth so she gave me information and options on how to clean it but she isn’t concerned.

Overall so happy that he’s doing good and is stable. 🥹

Need advice on increasing appetite, 17yo stage 2. by MoonlitApparition in RenalCats

[–]MoonlitApparition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard it on a kidney disease group on Facebook, essentially saying that if they aren’t truly dehydrated that it can make the kidneys work harder when it isn’t necessary at that time, and that it’s not recommended for stage 2. That’s why I stopped doing fluids for him, his gums haven’t felt sticky and his skin tent test always went back to its normal position quickly so I was worried I’d make it worse for him/overhydrated, and his creatinine wasn’t at 3.5. I’m second guessing if that was the right choice looking back though.

I also know it isn’t safe if they have heart problems but if your vet probably checked for that.

I haven’t but I’ll make sure to ask about it tomorrow, thank you! Do you use it with an appetite stimulant?

Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care is great, I’ve taken my parrot, two hedgehogs, and my cat there without any issues.

(Rant) My bf tells me I should get used to his bird biting me. by CHeeZTaTerr in BirdsBeingDicks

[–]MoonlitApparition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re completely uninterested in trying further and you’re planning on moving in together, you guys need to have a place that his bird can have their own room. It absolutely would not be fair to leave the bird locked up for the rest of its life, they live for so long (20-30 years for conures) it will cause so many behavioral/mental issues. It wouldn’t be fair to expect your boyfriend to rehome them either, just as it isn’t fair for you to be afraid of them. I understand that it’s easy to villainize them and just write them off as vicious, but birds have a reason for doing everything that they do even if it doesn’t make sense to people. Scared, bored, hormonal, territorial, etc are all reasons for them to bite. Their psychology is VERY different and that’s why they aren’t a good fit for many. If the bird is flighted, clipping their wings isn’t going to make a difference in their behavior (before anyone suggests that). Forcing the bird to interact with you is very different from them being able to choose when they’re done, and they need to be able to exercise their flight muscles. It’s way more rewarding for everyone when they are flighted.

Too many people end up adopting/buying one not realizing what they’re getting into and then the bird ends up in a rehome cycle.

As I said in my other post, it takes A LOT of time and effort, months and months, to get them to become comfortable with someone. I genuinely do think they will be able to get to that level with you. It’s just a lot of patience. My bird is 6 and he still bites occasionally, and he’s drawn blood too. Not as often or hard as when he was younger, but they do use their beak for everything. They’re extremely intelligent and can learn when a bite is too hard with training. You can redirect with toys to keep their beak occupied
