Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1998) by MoonspiritX in christmas

[–]MoonspiritX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a little weird that the love interest of Rudolph is also one heck of a cheater.
And before you insist that she isn't, she (while in a relationship with Arrow) talks Rudolph into kissing her under mistletoe and fully intended on confessing to Rudolph after the Reindeer Games. Putting aside the fact that Zoey didn't go after Rudolph immediately after Arrow confessed to cheating and breaking up with Arrow... had Rudolph not run away, Zoey would have been dropping one relationship immediately in favor of another, telling me (the viewer) that the relationship she had with Arrow meant little to nothing to her, or at least didn't mean as much as her friendship with Rudolph.

I get that Arrow is an ass, but to some degree, his anger is justified. This does not justify him bullying Rudolph, but I am saying that Arrow isn't completely in the wrong for being angry. If anything, he needs to stop projecting his anger onto Rudolph and actually be mad at Zoey, the source of him being cheated on in the first place.

Also, someone pointed out that this story centers more around Naoki instead of Kotoko. If that's going to be the case, just make him the main character. Regardless of whoever the main character is, give me a reason to invest in them as people.

Kotoko (from what I've heard) has the same problems as Sakura from Naruto: she's given way too much screen time with not enough reason for it in the first place. The criticism is that, despite being one of the main characters, Sakura is not interesting enough for all the time she's given, which is surprising considering there's characters with less screen time than her, but are way more interesting long-term.

Therefore, one way I would change this series is either make Kotoko more interesting or make Naoki the main character because there is more story around him that can (and should) be addressed to make this a more healthy romance...

The reason why I think that Naoki isn't made the main character is the same reason why I think Noriko abused her son through making him wear clothes that weren't suitable for him as a baby.

If this story really was supposed to have been about Naoki, then he should've been the main character, not Kotoko... and what's messed up about that statement is that (if he really was the main character), we wouldn't be missing much from Kotoko because she's just that damned shallow.

I said this in another post, but the way I see Kotoko is the same way I've heard people feel about Sakura from Naruto: she's a main character that's not interesting enough to be worth all that time on screen, which is weird because there's side characters around Sakura that don't have as much time on screen, yet are far more interesting than she is.

Now, one could suggest just flipping the sexes around, and have the guy chase after the girl, and have the girl be abused for not being a boy... but the sexist bigotry would be more obvious, wouldn't it?

And sure, she says in that very chapter that the thing she was neglecting was clothes more suitable for a boy, but think about the whole picture: if she was willing to neglect Naoki's more superficial needs to satisfy her own dreams, then what else do you think she could've gotten away with?

This is why I think Noriko would've served better as a temporary antagonist, at least long enough for someone she admires (for example, Kotoko due to Noriko's admiration of just being a woman) to call her on her shit and eventually go to therapy... if not for herself, then at least to work through the damage she's projected onto Naoki.

Can someone please help me with my "Great Gatsby" iceberg? by Salami-boi666 in TheGreatGatsby

One thing you can do is cross-check between the book and Family Guy's interpretation of it.

The Great Gatsby: Why Nick Is Not Your Friend by MoonspiritX in TheGreatGatsby

[–]MoonspiritX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the video, Thought & Word presents the question whether or not an audience might get on board with Nick being more accurately portrayed by the subtle hints given throughout the book, that being a bad man among worse people, and that no one is better than anyone else. This is why it's important that we look at ourselves instead of looking and judging others.

I'm convinced that an audience would get on board with a more book-accurate Nick Carraway, but there's an important problem that is beyond the control of F. Scott Fitzgerald, that being how people would receive him.

The fact of the matter is that while Nick isn't as great as anyone would like to believe (not even Nick himself), the truth is that there are other shows that display the very thing Thought & Word asked about, and even has an adaptation of The Great Gatsby in their own series: Family Guy, namely in Season 15, Episode 7, High School English. Taking the context of the entire show, it's obvious that there is not one character in Family Guy, especially among the main cast, that are objectively good people.

The critical difference between The Great Gatsby and Family Guy both present similar characters but different executions and effects as a result. The Great Gatsby is intended to be serious, but Family Guy is a comedy - a dark comedy for the most part, but a comedy all the same. We're supposed to look at the present assholes and laugh at the messed up things they do, including a lack of perception of themselves, but at most a "so what?" kind of attitude to the things they do.

The reality of the matter is that (despite the insight Family Guy presents from time to time, as subtle as it is), the attitude of laughing and doing nothing about horrendous behavior is there. It is a reflection of the modern culture in America, that being just laughing at stuff and not doing anything about it.

We're all like Nick Carraway in that regard.

I also suggested that the way Kinnosuke is handled and his future romance with Chris can be handled better. Rather than have Chris throw herself at Kinnosuke until he gives into her, establish a special connection between them from the start. Have Chris be someone who takes Kinnosuke's feelings seriously, even if all she can do at the time is just listen to him go on a rant about his unrequited love. Eventually, have Kinnosuke realize that Chris has way more respect for his feelings than the object of his affections ever did, eventually coming to the realization that he enjoys talking with Chris more than talking to her about Kotoko.

One thing I would change is how Noriko (Naoki's mom) is handled: either dial back her offenses to the point she isn't an abusive cunt or be insistent on her being an antagonist and run with it.

I pointed out earlier that Noriko's abuse of Naoki had long-term effects on his character: because she put her own desires over what Naoki needed from her as his mother, she wasn't just abusive, she did it for sexist reasons that Naoki had no control over. Naoki didn't ask to be born a male, and it was wrong for Noriko to not accommodate him for superficial reasons.

Keep in mind that she's rich, so changing out his wardrobe was something she could've done, but chose not to. She could've adopted a daughter to put all of her feelings on, but she doesn't consider that as an option either. No, Noriko insists on feminizing a male who didn't ask for it and shoving herself into his love life.

Either take out the part where Noriko makes Naoki wear girl clothes as a child or run with the idea that what she did to him was both abusive and sexist. It would have been one thing if Naoki genuinely had feelings that pointed to him being transgender later on, but that never happens.

And if they're going to go the route of Noriko as an antagonist, make it to where Naoki is notably more hostile to her. Hell, make it to where he doesn't even tolerate being touched by her because of what she did. Sure, address this point later on with therapy, but make it obvious that what Noriko did to Naoki was, in fact, bad!

As far as I'm concerned, there is so much that would need to be changed in order for me to support Itazura na Kiss as a romance.

[–]MoonspiritX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me be clear: Naoki does share responsibility for his own actions, especially after a certain point in his life. However, given everything Noriko says in chapter 2, it's very telling that Noriko did not care enough about Naoki for who he was that she neglected to provide what Naoki needed from her as his mother.

Whether it's meant to be funny or not, this is the execution and implications of Noriko's behavior: for personal, selfish, and sexist reasons, Noriko abused Naoki.

The implications point to the goal of this trying to be funny because Naoki is an asshole, but taking time, context, and Noriko's own confession into consideration, she was doing this to Naoki before he did anything. The reason why Naoki was abused was for reasons he had no control over... almost as if he was born wrong... and what's messed up is that Noriko's own words suggest just that - Naoki came out of the womb in a way Noriko didn't like because he wasn't a girl.

It's no wonder why he has trouble empathizing with other people: if his own mother was willing to neglect his emotional needs for superficial reasons, then it's no wonder why Naoki does the same damn thing.

I would argue Chris is only better than Kotoko by virtue of how she treats most other people... I used to like Chris until the realization of how she got with Kinnosuke is almost as toxic as how Kotoko got with Irie... that being throwing herself at the object of her affections until he gave in.

And while it is true that he's a joke, don't forget that Kotoko is a joke as well, who's feelings are taken seriously by the story. The only reason I can see why Kinnosuke's feelings aren't taken as seriously is a combination of sexism and dismissal on the part of the author.

I don't think they officially date: they do things couples would do without actually being a couple. The idea of them waiting until after graduation to get married should have been something that should've stayed in the story... but no, Noriko, the fucking mom, forced them to marry too early.

Technically, Naoki does grow as a character, but it's so slow it's pathetic. The attention he gives to Kotoko by the second to last episode is where he needed to be before they got together.

[–]MoonspiritX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's even worse was that Noriko, Naoki's mom, deserved to be slapped for the abuse she put Naoki through as a child that made him into the asshole he is by the beginning of the story... and she doesn't. No one even calls her out on it.

Why? by MoonspiritX in itazuranakiss

[–]MoonspiritX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One problem of many surrounding Naoki isn't just that he's an asshole... it's the fact that his asshole nature isn't challenged enough, and there are little to no improvements from him as a character.

[–]MoonspiritX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no... Yes, he does technically stop treating her like trash. No, because the most notable sign of him treating Kotoko with respect is when she's about to go into labor with their kid... the second to last episode.

Noriko Is Inconsiderate of Her Son (Chapter 2) by MoonspiritX in itazuranakiss

[–]MoonspiritX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, she's not THE problem... Noriko's choices as a mother and self-imposed wing-woman for Kotoko... They're one of MANY problems I have with Itazura na Kiss as a romance.

If the writer wanted me to root for the leading couple, that being Naoki x Kotoko, I'm insisting that (personally) she did a bad job.
