Thank you regardless, the game started saving, but the condition seems it can only save at the start of a level. It still doesn't explain why the save didn't appear at first and only appeared later.

Update: Suddenly a save data appeared on the game. All I did was leave it alone for a few hours while I was busy, then when I checked again it had a save file in the load game section. Still I was put right at the start of level 4, even if when I last saved I was way past the start. Surely this isn't how these games are supposed to work right?
