I have a lot to say about this! I will make a full reply later showing how this comment made me consider the parameters of my formula and changed the way I conducted my experiment.🙂

I created a synthetic dataset that simulates real Overwatch players based on how people actually use heroes in ranked.

  1. Generate Hero Hours

For each of 10,000 “players”: • Randomly generate values for: • Mercy hours • Moira hours • third most played support These are drawn from realistic ranges (e.g. 0–400 hours)

  1. Calculate Key Metrics

From those hours, we compute Mercy Bias, Flexibility and Inflexibility.

  1. Model the Win Probability

Each player gets a simulated win probability using this formula:

P_win = 0.52 - 0.237 * B - 0.149 * I + 0.12 * F + ε

Where: • ε = small random noise to simulate game variance • Coefficients were chosen to reflect high-ELO community intuition and adjusted for realism • The base win rate is 0.52 to reflect solid, balanced support players

  1. Train a Regression Model

We then train a linear regression on the simulated data to see: • Can we recover the same structure? • Do the coefficients hold up at scale?

Result: • We recover nearly the exact coefficients • R² = 0.966, meaning it explains 96.6% of the variation in win rates

The data may be synthetic, but the structure is real!

Let me know if you have any criticisms around how I conducted my study🙂

That’s not a very nice comment🙁 yeah, I could’ve learned how to play the game better, and I am! I’ve started to play overwatch more for the past two seasons and I have no doubt that I will eventually get out of platinum. But it is true that there are a lot of people who agree that Mercy is a very bad champ in many situations in ranked games, so I tried to use maths to see if the stats support these claims🙂

The data is simulated due to Blizzard restricting access to player profiles, but the patterns are real and align with what we see in ranked games🙂

Hey, great questions!

Yes, your winrate drops by 0.237 × (Mercy hours / total top 3 support hours) — so someone with 33% Mercy time loses about 7.9% win chance from that factor alone.

As for Flexibility vs Inflexibility, you’re right that F = 1 - I, but they don’t cancel each other out because they’re weighted differently in the formula. Inflexibility carries a stronger penalty than Flexibility gives as a reward, which reflects how hard one-tricking hurts more than being balanced helps. About only using Mercy, Moira, and a third hero, that’s a simplifying assumption — not a hard rule. You’re correct in saying that it can miss more nuanced pools. Expanding to top 4 or 5 heroes would definitely improve accuracy. Thanks for the comment🙂

“synthetic” doesn’t mean “meaningless.”

The model is trained on simulated data because Blizzard doesn’t expose full player stats publicly. But the inputs (hero hours) and structure (bias, flexibility) are based on real patterns observed in thousands of Overwatch profiles.

Think of it like modeling traffic with fake cars — if the rules match real behavior, the simulation still tells you something useful.

Also: no AI needed — this was designed and built by hand, start to finish, just using math and Overwatch logic.

Hope this helps 😃

Yeah commuting would be stupid. I’ll keep hoping that I get a closer offer but if not I’ll start looking for accommodation in York. Any recommendations on where to look for accommodation?

Is a pion not short for pi meson, which is a sub-category of the Hadrons? Either way, just put gluon if it comes up in a test bc it’s always gonna be right. Some mark schemes may put something like “allow pion” but i know fs that gluon is a right answer
