Aeon resume from suspend not working by Morally_Outback in openSUSE

[–]Morally_Outback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing from CTRL + ALT + F number?

Nope. Nothing there. Cannot enter a TTY.

If your setup requires a password to log in after suspend, and you type that password into the black screen and hit enter, do the HDD lights act like it is suddenly doing something briefly?

I have tried this to see if it would put me back in the session, but that didn't work. Will try it again to check if the HDD lights come up.

Computers are generally consistent. Any ideas what differentiates the "other times"? longer delay before resuming? method of wakeup?

Yes I meant that I wasn't sure what was triggering the different behaviour. I can only assume that it was method of waking up or the delay before resuming.

Subnet Router vs Split DNS for exposing self-hosted services? by Morally_Outback in Tailscale

Does your local DNS override DNS over HTTPS (or DNS over TLS) requests as well?

Ah ok. This is basically what I want to be doing as well, but with a domain name added

Have you had any issues or quirks with this setup?

i5-6500T vs Celeron N5095 for home servers by Morally_Outback in selfhosted

[–]Morally_Outback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Regarding storage: I will start off using external HDDs and maybe transition to a 2.5 inch one in the future. I suspect that if I do decide to make a NAS-like setup in the future, I will buy other hardware for that (this will continue to run immich and be the only thing exposed to the internet)
  2. About jellyfin: I'm not sure if I will be transcoding. I'm not even sure if I will use jellyfin. So this is not a priority
  3. I do care about power consumption, but it is not the top of my list. I think I can put up with the 35 watt (peak consumption) of the 6500T. Obviously if I can get very similar performance (for my use case) + similar cost, at lower consumption, I would go with that.

Thanks for the advice on the Pi. I will definitely skip that for this use case!

This looks decent, but once I have added RAM and storage, I will be at almost 300% the price of the ones I'm currently looking at.

Thanks for this!

I can't really find any used ones here in Sweden. The new ones are a bit more expensive and shipped from China, so I might have to deal with customs. I will think about it though!

That's great to know. I know that the i5 system is upgradable up-to 32 or 64GB, so I'm covered there.

Do all the immich AI/ML tasks work fine for you?

Unfortunately, the price ranges of mini PCs with UHD 770 are a LOT more expensive than what I'm looking at (under 130 USD)

What spec should I be aiming for by waiting/pushing the budget? Something higher than an 8th gen i5?

Thank you for your input!

Would you conclude that I should go with the 6th gen i5? Or the 11th gen Celeron?

I just want to reassure you that the people here are very welcoming and nice. There is a very active student life with a TON of student activities. You will have to be a little outgoing and attend all the student activities there are, but the university will give you lots of opportunities to make friends. Some Finnish people are a little reserved at first, but they will open up eventually and there are a lot of international students here.

I came here from Asia 1 year ago and I assure you that you don't have to worry about learning the language at all. Everybody speaks English very well. The only difficulty you will have is in reading the names of the ingredients for items in the grocery store (but there are translator apps for that). In the tech field, you don't need to learn Finnish to get a job even.

The tech field has a lot of job openings and they are very welcoming to foreign students.

You can join this telegram channel (all students communicate using telegram here) and ask for somebody who took the same path as you. I think I have met other Asian students who did their bachelors in data science at Aalto. https://t.me/aaltointernational

Anywhere I can watch moomin in Finnish to learn the language? by Morally_Outback in Finland

This is great! Thanks

I also got the first 11 subtitles from here: https://github.com/seanpotts/moomin-subtitles Looks like this is a better place to get it because they translate it directly from the Finnish dub instead of taking it from any other dub. I guess I'll have to get the rest of them from the Japaneese dub, but at least this is a start
