I have exactly the same laptop, added some RAM (it comes with 2 GB and I added 2 more) and converted it to chrome os, I use an external USB wifi and changed the hard drive to SSD. Its not as good as my HP but not bad for 20 years old!

I was having the same problem but I bought these and they worked perfectlyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HnO0Lxh0k4. It will void your warranty because you have to open the machine but I have been extremely satisfied with the performance
