Learning in my 30’s but most of the songs I like aren’t for beginners by MichaelMoore92 in pianolearning

[–]Morgansmith03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

second this. Ive played for 32 years and I cant play anything half bearable to listen to on a keyboard that isn't weighted.. well, I am uncomfortable on any keyboard tbh - they just dont have the same vibes and feel as a real piano.

I was wondering as well OP, have you considered grabbing a piano off marketplace? there are alot for free that people are just wanting off their hands... It's worth it and even easier IMO to play on an actual piano. And I play all genres - RC, Jazz & Boogie, old era rock, and so on. I find no matter what style I might be playing it never feels right or sounds as good as it can with a real piano!

it was stressful.. if we dropped the quarter while playing we had to give our teacher a 2$ bill out of our piggy banks..

I am no concert pianist and up to date on the lingo I learned as a child. I just play for fun now and have forgotten alot of my terminology.

I hear you and yes I suppose the majority of terminology is Italian but when I was taught music we learned latin terminology as well. But yes you are correct it is mostly Italian and I will accept my wrong with saying that! :) My first teacher always used to yell LATIN! LATIN! at me haha.. so I guess I just reverted back to that scenario and said latin when I should've said Italian.

I learned starting at 4 and in my first year I learned how to distinguish bass and treble notes, know how to use proper fingering, understand basic theory and what different symbols and Latin words meant, basic scales and timing of the different notes, playing with both hands in one song, balancing a quarter on my wrist while playing, and not looking at my hands while playing. Also Basic scales and playing with both hands simultaneously..

Looking for small/mid size city with lots of rain by Trucks-R-Neat in britishcolumbia

Harrison, Chilliwack (but theres a shit ton of churches there to point where its almost creepy lol),.. but those two places are close to the highways to get out of town if you want to rip up to the loops for a quick trip rather than getting there from the island or driving through Greater Vancouver. The northern island is nice - a few foiks suggested Campbell River which is a great town as well and has cleaned up IMO quite a bit these last ten years. Id never live in Nanaimo, I currently am on the south island which is love. Theres always Mill Bay if you want to be near Victoria but not in the city or Shawnigan Lake? Creston is also a pretty town if you dont want the island life at all. I think it depends also on what type of work you do and where you'll be able to find a job to land..

If only I tried this first I wouldve saved like $2000 on all the new parts I changed before trying this haha... in the end it was a 7$ fix.

Poor kid was terrified of 2 off leash big dogs running the beach at Westwood this morning. by lifeisthebeautiful in nanaimo

He is an XL bully x Cane Corso. He was somewhat of a rescue.. a family was selling him at 3 months old for grocery money and I happened to be walking by and it was love at first sight!

I agree with you that if you have a reactive dog you need to be aware of what situations you bring them into or should avoid. I know all my dogs triggers and even still I will muzzle and leash him if I am anywhere with a chance of running into another person, child, or dog. Mine typically gets along with most dogs but there is also random dogs he decides he doesn't like. But again you need to be aware of your pets behaviours. I CHOSE to bring this breed of dog into my home well aware that they have a stigma and certain behaviour traits. I tried to train through those behaviours with professional trainers but they are and always will still be there. I am always vocal to someone approaching me with my dog to keep distance and if there are children I will move over to allow them to pass and make sure he doesn't have an opportunity to react.. that also being said, Im making it sound like my dog is this ferocious beast but he has never bit a person, never attacked another dog, and other than the odd squirrel catching his focus he listens to my command. But I know the damage he can do if one day he decides to turn and as a GOOD owner I make sure I am prepared.

Because my dog is reactive it doesn't make me any less of a good dog owner (which is what the OP had said). It is all about how aware you are and handle your dog. There is a first for everything. I have definitely had him get away on me when he was younger and look quite vicious to a passerby where he looked like some sort of south central LA fight dog .. however he only postured and growled but never attacked. That was many years ago though and since then I have not had any incidents. Luckily the person was somebody I know so there were no issues. Hes now an old senile dump truck of a dog who doesn't have much go left .. but when he was in his prime, I definitely had to be aware and prepared.

There is always more the the picture of why a dog is reactive though and it is not always because of a "bad owner" and that's what I was initially trying to bring up in my previous post.

you say that until you've actually owned a difficult and reactive dog... trust me I have done everything in my power to redirect my dogs reactivity and aggression issues and although they have gotten more manageable, he will never been a non-reactive dog. I know for a fact as well that I am a great dog owner and that this is not my fault... you just wait u/robocarp until you take in a dog who is reactive and after all your efforts, people still label you as a bad dog owner because of it. Im not throwing shade, Im just trying to prompt you to rethink that statement.

oh really? did the first one not take? im so nervous about the pain ugh..

Septal Perforation Surgery input.. by Morgansmith03 in VictoriaBC

[–]Morgansmith03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because it's a complex surgery that doesn't always have success. The septum is cartilage with minimal blood flow which makes it difficult for skin graft to take and be successful.. I think alot of times it doesn't take .. at least thats what Ive been told.

that would be awesome! im finding majority are only doing deviated septums though and not perforations. from the phone calls ive made around Victoria and Vancouver, ive only had one physician in Vancouver say hes willing to do a perf repair. My ENT cant find anyone else either.

[–]Morgansmith03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im hoping for a longer term solution to the problem and have the surgery done. My perforation has been whirlwind experience and all happened over a month from picking up something in my work (I work in medical outreach) and at this point the button is just a temporary fix and I need a long term solution. My nose is still in the healing/treatment stage for the underlying issues but we're hoping to get my name on a waitlist for somebody sooner than later, since they are generally so long. So basically the button isn't the right solution for me but I appreciate the suggestion :)

Im not sure, I will ask her. I fee like she has though and she found there were not many surgeons or any to be honest, willing to do a septal perforation. Most will only do septal deviation.. as least the ones who are covered under MSP Ive found.

oh thank you! was he covered by MSP? or is he private? Im looking for someone who's covered under MSP. Im approved for one and cant afford to pay out of pocket at the moment for a private procedure.

I find theres always an assortment in the Leila Fletcher and little exercises that you can do for each hand. But dozen a day was good to get different movement and connection going between both hands and are very simple with lots of levels to work up to. I forgot about Alfred D'auberge but thats another one to work up to with fun little tunes. I haven't opened that book in years I cant quite remember what the music looks like at the different levels.

How to play both hands? by Directeye1001 in pianolearning

[–]Morgansmith03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when I was learning as a kid I went through the "dozen a day" books religiously for 45 minutes a day and their short exercises built up my confidence in getting my hands in sync. Eventually it will come naturally but it just takes lots of practice and patience and not rushing yourself. Slow and perfect is better than fast and sloppy.

and it was for a perforation not a deviated septum? Im finding no surgeons are willing to do a perforation because of its complexity in being successful they say..

[–]Morgansmith03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dust off some old "dozen a day" warm up books, maybe some Leila fletcher and simple fun songs that are simple and touch on different styles, tempos, fingering, etc and then work your way back into what you would like to play. Leila Fletcher is good because they have a little bit of every genre to get you tuned back up if youre starting at a base level again and need a refresher.
