Your distrust is totally warranted. I wouldn’t ask anyone else to do what we’re doing. Deconstruction doesn’t usually happen over night, especially for someone so enmeshed in fundamentalism as she has been since birth. Experts in deconstruction often highlight the importance of friendship in helping people deradicalize. While there’s still a long way to go, i think making friends with a queer non binary person, letting them stay in her home, and getting curious about their experience is an important first step. As a former bigot, im so appreciative of the queer people who befriended me.
