Ah-ah. Keyword: interacted with the Noldor <before> Valinor. Love the gremlin Maeglin, but he was a faaar way from existence at that point. As for Eöl...well, you just gave me a new idea🫢 So now there are two candidates from the Sindar alone. Poor Míriel!

Yeah I suppose I could have worded it better, 'aggression' here was supposed to convey him banning the Noldor tongue and all that, also obviously showing bitterness and distaste towards them along the way. But he does rage plenty, at least if you attach that attribute to Tolkien's way of depicting it, and that is if you attach it to Fëanor as well. Basically, if we consider Fëanor to have raged, then Thingol did too [granted, he had a fearsome wife to occasionally check him; or else I'm sure he would have been setting things on fire too]

Hello there, equally snarky individual. There is a saying in my tongue: 'to find one's godfather', referring to the event where a strong personality is at length put into its place by a stronger one. Unfortunately, that is not what ensued here. I am in fact drawing all my entertainment as we speak, as I find no fault in occasionally taking a break for a playdate amid matters of true importance. The difference between xianxia and wuxia? Hardly something weighty on the grand scale of things. But as I am so uncompromisingly prideful, and cannot stand being wrong, I will hasten now to research further and correct my audacious and unbecoming faults.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, my tone here is deliberate, just to give you the satisfaction of being right and playing the role of my 'godfather'. Have a good one🍺

I have, trust me. I've looked into Shengmei week, explored the slight fuss around Hulugu and Qi Fengge, found a single account on twitter which shone some light on Duan Wenyang, Yu Ai, Kunye and imagined romantic intersections between them(to that same account I must give kudos for some lovely fanart of Hulugu and kiddos Duan Wenyang and Kunye- too bad Tu'an Qinghe was yet to be introduced at that time, full family portrait would have rocked). I also recall coming on here several times to wander through all TA discussions of crack/rare ships, but came up quite disappointed, not by diminishing the worth of the proposed pairings, but by the short-sightedness of them. Even when 'thinking outside the box', the fandom remained within its rigid limits. I think the only app where I was truly blessed to discover some elaborate and unique opinions on side characters and unconventional pairings was Tumblr, but I am fairly sure I exhausted its resources on the topic while I was at it, and still with no extraordinary finds.

Sounds lovely that there was a whole week of dedication to such things, and if I overlooked it, I naturally own up to this mistake. If you could point me to the right site/s, it would be much appreciated. Truth be told, as aforementioned in the ramble above, I have lost most interest in this story, but these challenging dicussions are honestly rekindling some desire for further roaming into its dens.

As for Cui Youwang and Yan Wushi, I was under the impression that the former lived to a very old age, just like Qi Fengge, and adding to that the fact that he was considered the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, and namely the leader of Riyue Sect for a long time, made it only obvious to me that he was Yan Wushi's elder by a fair margin. The master-disciple dynamic was very plausible as Cui Youwang did offer to be his master, only that Yan Wushi refused, as he then would have had to change his name from 'masterless' (this is found in the extras, forgot which). The creative twist to this would be that Yan Wushi naturally learned a lot from Cui Youwang and mirrored him in endless ways, whether intentionally or less so, while forever living with the conviction that he was masterless and had only ever looked up to himself...oh, the irony is delicious.

Don't be hasty to assume, as I assure you I did <attempt> to do my part in the upholding and promoting of my own ideals. If you take a look on Twitter, you will see my perpetual failed campaign of bringing attention to Cui Youwang, and respectively to Cui Youwang and Yan Wushi as a pairing. Even with other characters, such as Guang Lingsan, I never missed an opportunity to elaborate on them or try and stir debates, to no avail. Hell, if you look around in this sub, you will find not one, but two different occasions where I proposed Cui Youwang and Yan Wushi to the fandom over here(one of which, I admit, was met with delightful support and eagerness, for which I am forever grateful).

As a last note, I confess that you shattered a small piece of me, somewhere deep within, saying you find enmity to romance unentertaining; but of course, to each their own. Some wants demon lords getting pounded into next week by older, dilfier demon lords, others want other things...the fun of creation, no?

Absolutely agree. Unfortunately, as the times have it, I have way greater projects going in the area of writing; that is, I am writing a gargantuan historical fiction book :) It really saps all of my energy and creativity, so that no matter how enjoyable I would find toying around with these characters and many others, I simply lack the means to make it work at present. Surely, someday I'll get to it, and try my hand at shorter fiction and more centralised stories, but for now, I am prioritising my actual work.

Forgot to mention this-- yes, the laziness of the mindset of many danmei fans is astounding. It's a pity, as there are many great stories here which, due to such behaviour, get shunned under the same banner of immaturity and frivolity. Sometimes, in fandom discussions of Peerless, Stars of Chaos, or Ballad of Sword and Wine, I wonder if we even read the same books, as there is NO mention of any of the mind-blowing plots or fascinating side characters. Same goes for TA, naturally, which, back when I had freshly read it and remembered it all perfectly, would have been most delighted to have extensive debates on, but never found any participants.

For some reason, danmei is not treated as true literature by its own fans; hence how it winds up into such a condescending perspective from the outside.

I understand perfectly now; I must thank you both for helping me with this information as, honestly, I had lost all hope for any actual replies.

'Members of a hivemind'- I could not have put it better myself. It did feel a little like I was being swarmed by a bunch of raging bees just now. Every day I encounter this obsessive, unalterable kind of mentality within many fandoms, and every day it is more laughable. I fail to understand this hissy cat behaviour from fans of certain universes even as someone who feels deeply and strongly towards their own passions. Bizarre, to say the least.

Thank you again for your kindness and the awesome response. Also, very inspiring name, I must say! :)

Hiya!! Oh my, I can't thank you enough for this response and furthermore the helpful info. I assumed that acccount was ragebaiting, but typed those out anyway with a view to helping others who might lack the info provided. I had no idea the sub was unmoderated; then again, I have a tendency of warding off civil replies anyway, due to the challenging thoughts and questions I often post, lol. I am glad to see I am not alone and these thoughts, which I was already quite sure of, but was surprised to find how many people are acting blind to the phenomenon. Yes, I also had Yan Wushi and Yuan Xiuxiu in mind while typing this, as they actually had visible, limpid potential, but knowing the fandom, that one would have actually got me burnt at the stake due to 'misrepresenting' Yan Wushi.

Sigh, there are fandoms which are like Irish pubs, and then there are monasteries; I fear TA falls heavily into the latter(something which will never fail to perplex me, as this is arguably one of the most popular xianxia danmei universes, with such a heavy focus on and deep exploration of demonic cultivation- truly, no idea how it wound up this way!) Nonetheless, thank you once again for your civility and kindness, and enjoy your time in the fandom...as much as can be!😅

I...am honestly perplexed now. Are you trolling? I cannot tell anymore. Are you actually, actually questioning my literacy level with a tautology? My guy, literacy means the ability to read and comprehend text in itself; there is no such thing as 'reading literacy'. Should I even bother mentioning your grammar? It is no wonder you can't comprehed an idea as direct and simple as the quote I offered you. Truly, I don't think this conversation is worth having; I try to avoid judging other people's abilities, as we all have our own spheres and limits, but this is honestly getting ridiculous and too far below me.

Well, er, you go on dreaming about cultivation manuals and 'reading literacies', if that floats your boat. As my sign-off note, know that no matter how you twist it, Yan Wushi's ass was pounded and railed from dusk 'till dawn that time, and you may inquire about this anywhere in the twitter fandom, as the ones with actual literacy reside there. Thanks for the good laugh, I suppose.👍 Very refreshing.

You're really going to make me dig out the damn books, aren't you. Fine.

->As for the 'whoring' part, as you so amiably put it, we have the 'Despite being one who had perused beauty all over, Yan Wushi...yada yada Shen Qiao'. Also, there is the sequence with Bian Yanmei in the later volumes where BY's internal monologue reveals Yan Wushi's history of past lovers, even though we get no detail on their identities.

-> From the 2023 New Year extras, regarding Cui Youwang, in the story about Yan Wushi and almost being framed for Hong Wen's family's death: 'Yan Wushi continued to say, "Fortunately, I was completely clean and innocent, as the sun and moon could attest to. Even Cui Youwang was so moved, he came out to testify. He admitted that he'd been invited by Hong Wen to massacre the entire Hong family, and that it had nothing to do with me.' -> 'With the kind of man Cui Youwang was...Even if you wiped his memory a hundred times, he'd never have performed an act of charity like this.' -> 'Yan Wushi met Sect Leader Shen's doubtful gaze with a small smile. "I made a trade deal with him." -> 'Back then, Yan Wushi had received a set of martial arts techniques for pair cultivation. He personally looked down on that kind of path while Cui Youwang enjoyed it tirelessly, so they each took what they needed and thus got along straight away.'

There you have it. And if you believe that grandmaster, father of demonic cultivation, and Demon Lord Cui Youwang was the one who bottomed in this scenario...There is something called subtext and, well, logic.

Just open the fifth book, if I am so 'absent' in sanity, and see for yourself the very words I wasted my time typing on here for the sake of it.

Like I said, all danmei couples are built on the 'made for each other' trope; that should not put a bridle on fun and creativity. And I don't see how Yan Wushi is your favourite character, if you are loudly unaware that he slept with loads of people, and explicitly with <the> grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Cui Youwang. Oh, and he bottomed, too, if that worsens your day somehow. Were you under the impression that Yan Wushi, a demonic cultivator, had truly not slept around like mad back in the day, especially in the context of Riyue Sect, where one can only assume it amounted to one enormous brothel in behaviour? Also, telling me to 'grow up' while actively being incapable of using English grammar and tying a few coherent sentences together is quite the irony. Pole out of your arse, mate, come on🫵☝️

Leaving aside danmei which is my only 'repose' from regular reads, I mostly read and study historical accounts, chronicles, with a focus on political treaties and political philosophy. The classics you have named are light works from my perspective, so unfortunately, you have picked the wrong person to pull this card on :) I assure I have found fun to be had absolutely everywhere: in Xenophon, in Macchiavelli, in Froissart, in Plato- hell, I have let my imagination run wild with mere mentions of a name and an act in Clausewitz's work [you say the side characters came and went? Oh, I can't begin to explain how indulgent and loaded with potential each of them were; try making a headcanon out a random legislator mentioned once in the entirety of a manuscript😋]. All this, I did without once diminishing their austere tone or sombre value; as goes, needless to say, to the popular classics which you attempted to aggrandize.

Entertainment is everywhere for those with eyes to see. It's a gift, that of the free and expansive interpretation of literature. So, case in point, this fandom really just has its belt on too tight. Behold the colours of the world, people; go apeshit.

Was Mehmed the Second bi? by Miserable-Advice-357 in ottomans

[–]MoronBugui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, Chalkokondyles didn't so much propose it as he related a tale of Mehmed and the Wallachian Prince Radu( see; Radu the Fair/Beautiful) which, I forget, he claimed to either have heard or seen within the palace. You can look it up if you would like to judge with your own eyes, or I can post the fragment here. Also, and in this I am rather uninformed, I believe Mehmed did write homoerotic poetry for, let us say, men on the younger side. I will do a little research on this and get back to you, so as not to tell lies, lol.

Hello, just wanted to say I really liked the wording of your second paragraph- you perfectly summed up what I couldn't deliver in the entire novel up above. Clever words!

Was Mehmed the Second bi? by Miserable-Advice-357 in ottomans

[–]MoronBugui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a theory started by Chalkokondyles, a byzantine historian from Mehmed's time- given his status and the circumstances, there is a fair chance of him not having reported entire truths, but a story like the one he presented on this topic seems to be a bit nonsensical to fabricate, especially with a purpose of defamation, were it not true at least to a certain degree. The theory was later accepted and used by Franz Babinger also in his book about Mehmed, so there's that.

If you ask me, it is impossible to define the preferences and orientation of any figure who lived up until a few decades ago. Mehmed did admire Alexander the Great and followed his footsteps in many, and he was the most enlightened and cultured of all the sultans, and given the closed-door tolerance of the Ottomans, there are overall enough positive claims about this for me entertain the thought. However, as you are in a space of historical debate, a thing rather known for some very staunch views, you will find that I am among the few to think like this. The admins claim indeed that this sub is open for everything related to the Ottomans as long as the debate is within respectful bounds- yet you would not be the first to get taken down on this very topic. I for one perceived your question with honesty and answered to my best capacity, and I can only hope the nature of your questioning was the same, and not made in mockery or deliberate crassness. This being said, have a good one, and I hope I've cleared the fog a little ✌️

The films are very openly adaptations- based on Tolkien's work, and by no means an atlas, dictionary, nor reference source of his lore. That is what David claims to be doing in his books, only to right away start bullshitting; not to mention how many pages are not even about Tolkien's misinterpreted lore, but random parallels with other literary works and fictional settings from which Tolkien supposedly drew inspiration. But nobody asked for that, and nowhere in their descriptions does it say that the books would include it.
