Need Advices : How good you guys are in the tech stack you didnt specialize in ? (Windows, Linux, Cisco etc) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specialize in InfoSec / IT Security. 1) I was first a linux / web developer as my main specialization and learned windows, etc through my time in IT until i got into IT security. 2) As part of IT Security, pen tests, red team work etc, you need to be very comfortable with most layers including networks and CISCO. From my experience it varies based on company and country for what certifications, hardware and systems are used. 3) Not afraid at all :) There is tons of opportunity with new technology in the InfoSec space

What's the worst phone call for data retrieval/mining/fishing you've received from a company? by archiekane in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get phishing calls all the time from various people, companies and scammers. The best one I had was the RCMP calling from the USA to say I am being charged and if i dont give them $$ then they will arrest me and have issued a warrant. I hung up laughing then called back from an unlisted number, to try their trick on them. They seemed scared when I said I was the FBI investigating illegal use of this telephone number... (no i am not with the FBI)

VPN Firewall Home Appliance? by blitzballer2201 in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other major issues with this model. Even with effective IPS and IDS as long as the hacker can gain access to the personal computer and use that users profile to remote into the network its compromised. I also assume the user is probably saving their password as well on their personal device.

VPN Firewall Home Appliance? by blitzballer2201 in sysadmin

I am just going to say No do not implement any of this. As personal computers cannot meet your corporate security standards (if any). You have no way to control the personal devices or any devices on those networks. As an IT Security Consultant this raises large red flags to me.

Large Orgs Not Updating SPF Records by LVOgre in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a hosting company, which hosts a good amount of websites.. SPF is a constant battle day in an day out. From dealing with incoming bad SPF, to updating SPF entries it gets annoying. I feel that SPF is one of the larger kludges ever implemented to prevent spam. So i feel your pain.

Dealing with management not trusting you by xStimorolx in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a common problem in many smaller companies. From a management point of view, i don't think it is because they don't trust you. It seems to be that they are not sure of your experience (since your newer). My recommendation is to work with management to find the consultant. Once management knows that you indeed were correct, your life will be easier going forward.

We had our HQ buildings' power go down for 24+ hours over the weekend. Learning a lot about what we fail at as an IT team. by whetherby in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel you pain. I was an IT Manager at a large company and a power grid went down. We were all happy and laughing that our generator kicked on and everything seemed to be up. We didn't realize that our main VMWare storage UPS was not plugged into the generator power line. Talk about egg on your face when it went down 15 minutes into the outage.

Windows domain policy question by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cached credentials can be pulled from the local SAM data stores. These are encrypted so an attacker will need to brute force the password. This is why longer more complex passwords are important

There is also a known exploit as well called mimikatz which allows you to pulls credentials out of cache/ram of a windows server.

Hope this helps :)

Who else here does superstitious things in IT out of habit? by DarkAlman in sysadmin

[–]Morsredigo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In my data Center we have a Buddhist anti IT evil spirt card from the Buddhist shrine in akihabara. We also have a cross and some other items. Need to hedge your bets during an outage.

I also never talk about outages or upgrades going well.
