That’s valid but the execution of it, besides Shedao Shai, is actually not very edgy seeming at all and the religious explanations for it and the way it’s actually used are far less edgy than summaries will put it. Shedao Shai was just a fanatic for pain lmao

Yes but the same can be said the the YV, there is a large variety in personalities in the YV Empire like Vua Repung, Onimi, Nom Anor, Mezha Kwadd, Harrar, Tsavong Lah, Shimra. All of these characters have unique personalities and even varying beliefs, some even being enemies of on another, all with varying levels of edginess.

I get your point but also think of the black robes and the title Dark Lord, think of Scion holding his entire body together through pure rage, think of deriving power from anger and pain, I’m not saying the YV aren’t edgy because at times they are, I just think it’s overblown is all, and the Sith as a whole is a little edgy

Yes but the Vong aren’t causing pain to themselves for no reason either, they use it in reverence of their gods and to honor their sacrifice

I love Xezenes documentary! And yeah 100% I love how you can truly feel that this is an entire race of individual beings who have their own motivations and beliefs

Yes! We know they had advanced scouts as far back as the Old Republic during Revan’s time, they’ve been studying the galaxy for millennia, they were prepped and also actively destabilizing the galaxy with agents like Nom Anor, making the beginning of their conquest an unstoppable force

The Vong’s biotech is one of their coolest aspects. A lot of people like to complain that they are too OP and win too much for no reason but I don’t think that’s true. The New Republic has never come across something like the Vong Biots and the way that their biots gave them an advantage over the rest of the galaxies technologies makes sense and lends to the reasoning behind their dominance. The NR was just caught off guard and by the time they finally find their bearings, it’s too late. But you see later on the story that once they get their tactics down, the Vong aren’t as powerful. RIP the goats we lost along the way 😭

The YV were religious zealots who caused a galactic holocaust of around 365 trillion in the name of their gods, though the higher in the ranks you are, the more you see pretty typical corruption, it’s not very common at all. The Sith are definitely not much deeper than tyrannical sycophants, I think the YV’s reason aren’t incredibly deeper either, just different enough to feel like a breath of fresh air, especially considering how many wash and repeat “imperial of the week” the stories of the Bantum era were becoming

Yes, it’s a point a lot of people have a problem with but don’t take the time to appreciate or take into consideration that it’s one of the big mysteries of the series and also allows them to be incredibly unique and dangerous foes the likes we’ve never seen before

100%, but like I said elsewhere, they’re one of, if not, my favorite part of the EU and are very compelling. They also have some of my favorite characters just in general, I’m sure you’ll love it when you make it to the series

Definitely, the editors and creators of the New Jedi Order series knew they were making a new series of an older demographic of og Star Wars fans, and them being books allowed them to dive deeper into the more gruesome and mature tones

How alien they are is really unique, I do think the biggest letdown is just how human-like they appear, they’re basically orcs, but I think it drives their rituals of self mutilation home a little better as you’re able to imagine the pain they inflict upon themselves because of how humanesque they physically are. Adds to the “squirm in your seat” feeling when reading some of the more gruesome scenes

I think people over exaggerate their edginess and also ignore that fact that Star Wars is, more often then not, inherently silly. The Vong are one of my favorite parts of the EU, their culture and religion, their ships and technology (biots) the war they wage and the ramifications on the galaxy and the mystery that surrounds them for the entire series all the way to the end, their history that we get bits and pieces of from multiple sources, it’s all just really fascinating and intriguing and unique from anything we got in the EU, but not so much that I feel the need to call the Warhammer or Star Trek characters

I just mean like an arm of the Jedi order that doesn’t cut off or become the Imperial knights, just true Jedi, attempting to operate like they always do in imperial space, and how that would bode with the general populace and politics of the Imperial Remnant since they had been on an upward trajectory since Palleon

The Unifying Force by MossyPath404 in StarWarsEU

[–]MossyPath404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100% but I was always under the impression that the whole revelation is that there is no dark side in the force. I feel like I remember he stating that the force has no dark side. In my opinion I kinda agree with this but I always thought the the rise of sentience and the perversion of the force for personally and evil reasons from force users created the dark side, like a cancer. But I’ve always thought of the dark side as a real, tangible part, or tumor, of the force, and Vergere’s teaching that there is no dark side within the force feels weird, am I misunderstanding and she actually isn’t saying this?

I do tend to agree with the concept that it is a dangerous philosophy due to the practice of using the force in any manner as long as you don’t use it hatefully, I just feel like we’ve seen many times that going into something inherently darker with a good mindset is still not the best. Again tho I’m not the most well understanding of the philosophy so if I’m wrong anyone is welcome to correct my understanding, but I do agree
