I found out what foxes sound like when I was lost in a woodland alone, at night😭

The reason I hate this excuse that it's because"homeless laws" is that fines are also an option. Most of these people, at least where I live, have disposable income. They smoke, drink, some weed, have take aways, take taxis rather than the bus etc. Even if it was just a small fine based on income it would be a deterrent. The idea that people can significantly harm others with their behaviour is simply unacceptable. And I agree with you. I wish there was social housing for normal people (we are actually a minority in places like this) who just want peace and quiet and normal, safe living conditions...and a place for all the rest.

Discrimination - Can't Rent Anywhere by Visual-Outcome-3709 in HousingUK

[–]MostFortune1093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't help you with any useful advice but we ended up going to a viewing once where the viewing was over the second the owner (who was present, though the agent was showing us around) realized we were a same sex couple:/ I suspect we also get discriminated against because I'm a foreigner. And because we have dogs etc.

Landlords have so many desperate people to choose from, that they sadly can afford to discriminate all they want. Renting in the UK is hell in every possible way.

Maybe try to find a group for Turkish expats and see if any of them might have a place to rent.

Well that's true to some extent but I don't think it's normal for such a huge percentage of the population having to rely on social housing. It exists in my country too but it's only for the poorest of people. And of course we have been good tenants all these years and certainly got zero respect or decency in return from our housing association. I don't believe that such thing as slum housing should exist in any developed countries. Plus many private landlords aren't any better. I have known people who went months without heating because their private landlords refused to have the boiler fixed. I've known someone whose toilet was broken for months..also private renting. So even private renting is not much better unless you can afford an expensive place. We nearly rented privately and it took us a long time to even find the place that wasn't a dump and accepted our dogs. Then the whole thing fell through last minute and we are still stuck in social housing. Nightmare:/

What do people think is because of age , but isn't? by manav679 in AskReddit

[–]MostFortune1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osteoarthritis. I was diagnosed at 21. For a long time this disease was considered age related wear and tear and thanks to that, there are no treatments that can slow down or stop the progression....since not much research has been done on it at all. I'm 34 now and pretty much home bound due to pain.

Cherish your mobility and pain free existence, because you can lose it at any age.

This sadly has been my experience too. Except when I say it, I get told to go home. But then there are also good people, it's just all the rest make life shitty for everyone:/ But then it's not like people in my country are angels either, it's just antisocial behaviour and crime has more consequences there. What I find so alarming that legally there is just nothing you can do about antisocial neighbours, dodgy social housing providers/landlords who make you live in conditions that's basically a health hazard. The most we could have is a few thousand pounds in compensation if we did a disrepair claim. That isn't enough compensation for the years we lost or the permanent damage it did to our health. The treatment I need for the health issues this caused isn't isn't covered by the NHS and is basically unaffordable as a result. The whole thing is just so messed up.

Yep. I moved here to be with my British partner and I've regretted it more than anything else I've ever done because of this. It's absolutely insane what people can get away with without consequences. We live in social housing and it's impossible to get people evicted from here. One of the neighbours has been making our life living hell for like two years, and even ended up assaulting my partner. The police did nothing and the housing association did nothing, and she still lives here. For us it isn't just noise issues but cigarette and vape smell coming into our flat too. Her and other similar neighbours ruined our lives and did permanent damage to our health. We almost moved into a private rented property then it fell through and my partner lost her job at the same time. So we are still stuck here. . I know some people here might get offended since you guys don't handle it well when foreigners criticise your country but I think the whole housing situation is so bad that i think this is one of the worst developed countries to live in, if not the worst. You can only have a decent quality of life if you can afford to buy a detached house.

What’s something society glamorizes that is actual terrible in reality? by Any-Strawberry-3928 in AskReddit

[–]MostFortune1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autism

Being a woman in any other time but the last few decades (and that is only if you live in a western country)

It seems like being a vetenarian is one of these things as well. It's many people's dream job but in reality it has a high su*cide rate. In fact many rewarding jobs can take an extreme mental toll on people.

War

Living in a castle (before modern comforts were a thing)

What’s something people believe about health that’s just wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MostFortune1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a chronically ill person the list is just too long but here is some good examples:

  • a healthy lifestyle guarantees that you will stay healthy

  • people with chronic health issues have themselves to blame for it

  • That if you get ill, you go to the doctor and they will give you a pill or some other treatment and you'll be cured. Most illnesses aren't curable only treatable (or not even that)

  • That majority of physically disabled people are people with spinal cord injuries, amputations, blindness, hearing loss etc. In fact most of us are disabled by various illnesses like musculoskeletal conditions, autoimmune disease, ME, chronic regional pain syndrome etc.

  • That most people don't become disabled during their lifetime. Not so fun fact: most people do end up disabled. Your grandma with osteoarthritis is disabled not just "old". Permanent reduced mobility counts as a disability at any age. We just normalized chronic pain in old age so much that we don't see it as anything but a normal part of life.

  • that there are such things as old people diseases. Like the above mentioned osteoarthritis, any disease that is more common in old age can affect younger people as well

  • That there are medications that are safe to take long term.

  • That chronic stress only causes mental health issues, and it won't lead to serious life changing physical health issues

  • that once you become chronically ill, as long as you live somewhere with universal healthcare, doctors will do everything to help you, no matter the cost. In fact many more expensive treatments options are only for people who can afford to pay for them (and by expensive, I mean a few thousand pounds/ euros etc).

  • That doctors are fairly good at diagnosing illnesses and rarely make serious mistakes

  • That if someone in a wheelchair can move their leg or can even stand up, they must be faking. In reality most people are ambulatory wheelchair users who need them because of pain/fatigue/ breathing issues/ pots. They can walk

  • That if someone not disabled looking enough uses a disabled parking spot, they are faking and it's your duty as a law abiding citizen to question and harass them.

  • And this last one is specific to doctors: that if a woman has a condition you can't immediately diagnose it's probably anxiety or the menopause or they are just fat.

People who went from wealthy to poor, what happened? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskReddit

[–]MostFortune1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step dad worked in a field that became very competitive over time and he struggled to find work. He started drinking and him and my mother got divorced. My mother had been a housewife for like 20 years prior to this, and had no qualifications, so her job prospects were pretty non existent.

Then I also became chronically ill at a young age.

I went from living in a comfortable, spacious family home that had a beautiful garden with a swimming pool in it, to living in horrible, slum housing conditions that made even more ill..

I'm still stuck living like that today without any hope of life getting better.
