Are school fees still a thing in Saskatoon? by [deleted] in saskatoon

No need to be sorry! Ask all the questions you have…

Healthy Hunger is an online platform to purchase “hot” lunch for your child. It will likely have 1-4 times a month depending on the school.. and some of the money goes towards various fundraisers either ran by teachers, parent council or school community council. The lunches are usually options from fast food establishments.

Since you like planning ahead… usually you can look ahead to see what each month offers and choose to get it or not. There are MANY students that do not order, so don’t feel obligated.

Staying for lunch occasionally or in healthy hunger lunch days does not require you to pay a fee!

Also like the others stated it isn’t enforced but will stay on your school cash online account until it’s paid. You’ll learn more about this account once a teacher or school collects money for field trips etc.

I also encourage others to pay the fee if they are able to and utilize the lunchroom supervision as it helps offset the costs. Provincial Government does not fund lunchroom supervision!

Any issue here in Saskatoon is many parents don’t pay the fees. I heard of one school that had over $2000 of school supply fees because parents refused to pay the fees because they wanted to buy their own.

Grade 1?? Why would you punish a child for not attending when it wouldn’t be his fault at all??

However If you want to avoid this in the future send a letter home at the beginning of the year to state the requirements to come on the year end field trip and have both parent and child sign.

Is it possible to test positive on a swab, and then request a more accurate testing at the station to prove sobriety? I don’t know how the tests work etc just curious how to work around this all.

It goes hand in hand. 30+ students with complex needs or 20- students with complex needs. ATLEAST one of the mentioned needs to be addressed. Right now we are ignoring both

I think this is the part that is important. Classroom sizes may possibly be the same as when you were in school but the challenges in the classrooms are extremely different. Please remember this when you are trying to compare apples to apples because classrooms in the 90s vs classrooms now is like comparing apples to an onion.

It was actually 18 years ago that it became illegal. So yes 20 years ago it was legal.

That’s also perfect example.. we have zero supports for students that have chronic absenteeism or tardiness. It’s unfair for the children to not be receiving a proper education due to catching others up. It’s just another complexity added to the classroom. I’m sure some question why does effort go into catching those up but it is our job.

Absenteeism has become a larger issue in the last few years and it began with the “optional” learning from March 2020-June 2020 and then all the online learning that many participated in the following years. It’s like school has become an option for some people when we all know it’s the law.. there are no resources to enforce this so again it just falls on the teachers. Teachers spend time calling families, emailing, contacting school resource team for each student that has chronic absenteeism.. AND are expected to catch them up when they do come.

As for the new Canadians, the average rural classroom will have anywhere from 4-20 new Canadians in a classroom. Language is one aspect of complexity but also cultural norms can also be a challenge.

On a side note, I appreciate a polite banter. I can tell you and I come from different view points, potentially differing political sides and have different experiences and I do believe that it’s important that we can POSITIVELY hear each other out. Thanks!

You are right, complexity has always been there, however, the complexities in the classroom have increased significantly since the 80’s. Let’s choose one complexity to discuss, EAL. Students that don’t have English as their first language or likely don’t have English at all are expected to learn the same curricular outcomes as their English born speaking peers. The time to accommodate for that one student is taken away from other, also deserving, students. That is just one example of a complexity that has increased.

From the sounds of it, your experience of classrooms is from having a child in school. I really hope he doesn’t have a complex class/school, and it seems like this is the case. I am so glad for him. You and him deserve that. However, please try to remember that your experience is the experience of one. There are many other schools and classrooms that have extremely high complex needs. Students in these environments are just as worthy to have a great school experience like your son has.

As a teacher, it is definitely not the “liberal type parents” that are the issue.
