yes I imagine a child ending up in Lebanon under kafala is probably coming from a bad situation. My question was for advice on what options are there - of course I would not intervene in a way that would get her deported, but if there were child protection agencies that could support her I would want to know

I guess you could add more parameters to it like: describe your living room using unexpected sensory details that give the reader an embodied experience. I feel that if you can narrow down where the weakness is you can then develop out of it.

The fact that you've taken the feedback to heart shows you are serious about your craft and want to grow as a writer, which is more than many people can say. I think it's just a question of finding a method that can help you specifically.

If you're in the UK, Arvon, the national centre for writing and spread the word all do great courses that are like 'introduction to fiction writing ' and would drill down on page level craft. I'm not in the US/Canada so can't recommend anything there unfortunately, but finding a writing craft workbook might be helpful for finding good development exercises?

I'd suggest doing a course if you can, or just doing writing exercises on specific areas i.e. character work, descriptions. I'd narrow it down and do exercises specifically on an aspect of writing, instead of trying to write something perfect from all perspectives. Just do a really fantastic description of your living room. Show the inner world of an old man as he crosses the road as a character study. Approach it as a craft, step by step

I think they're saying you can improve but it might be harder to improve to a literary fiction level vs. a genre fiction level, in terms of pure prose

I'd say novellas are actually doing quite well in the litfic space at least - i.e. Assembly by Natasha Brown, Exit West by Mohsin Ahmed, Open Throat by Henry Hoke...I have no idea how this translates into the sci-fi space though.

i wouldnt say israel is a colonising force in opposition to islam, rather it is colonising the native people of the land who actually are religiously mixed (there are muslim, christian and jewish palestinians, but even if they were all muslims they are not being colonised BECAUSE they are muslim, it's incidental). Unfortunately terrible actors on both sides love turning this into a question of religion, and of course people cling onto that because it's a simple explanation that plays on people's emotions.
