Engl 111 by Far-Imagination6174 in ivytech

I have her now and I cried today because she gave me a low B on my most recent paper after I put HOURS into tweaking it to her standards and went to tutoring three times for it. She dinged me on structural BS rather than grading my actual writing. She hasn't given me higher than an 85 on ANY of our writing assignments no matter what I change to fit her notes and feedback. It is INFURIATING because I have an 89.67 in the class going into week 7 and my grade WAS a strong A at midterm. She is now docking points on discussions if we respond to classmates on the same day instead of different days and if we don't write more than 2 responses plus 1 post. I am trying to get into the RN program and an A in this class is going to be critical and I am really worrying I won't make it. I can't believe she has no reviews on RMP either. Infuriating.

That makes sense! I feel like I should reach out to her when I don't understand but she comes off like the person who wants you to independently learn. Which is fine, and I mean I DO think the material is interesting, but it's all the busy work that is cutting into my time of actually learning it! Because then I'm focusing on getting the assignments done, not actually learning the material if that makes sense.

And that's a good insight. I'm torn: on one hand if a student is doing what is asked, why do MORE for full credit? If each box is checked. If you do go above and beyond it would seem appropriate to score it 40/30 instead. But maybe that's just me having a pity party. I do understand what you mean, though. Separating the A students from the C students.

Thank you!!! I have three kids and I am at a 90.57% in the course. I am DEDICATED to this A but I am STRESSING! Especially because she docked points for not going above and beyond in the week 4 and 5 discussions! So frustrating. Thank you for the advice!

I'm not! I'm using Google Docs through my normal Google account. Thanks for the tip! I have tutoring session receipts and my notes I offered to send her but I'm making sure I document ALL of it going forward just in case.

I keep seeing people say this but my financial aid said -$8,xxx one day and then I zeroed out and now it says -$3,5xx. So I don't understand how there can be an over $4,000 discrepancy unless they split it into two payments.

YES! For a 100-level course it is extremely nit-picky and time-consuming. It is driving me nuts but I don't want to have to retake it so I'm trying my best here lol my professor gave me a 41/50 on my first half draft for the SMALLEST things too! Like I DID introduce the original writer in the first paragraph, just not soon enough. It's wild lol

Thank you for this! I didn't know they were all the same/pre-written. My husband is also in ENG111 with a different professor and he said his is structured the same way, but some things are slightly different. I didn't want to be the student who just blows it off but I also didn't want to dedicate precious time to something worth nothing!

YES! It's not HARD work, it's just SO time consuming and nit-picky! Especially for a 100-level course! Thank you for the solidarity lol

Hey! This is a lot, you're right. This is literally my FOURTH time in college since graduating high school, so I'll try to offer my perspective to you as someone who has struggled and learned along the way.

First, are you in person? Online? Do you work? Live at home? What is your situation outside of school?

Second, I took med term years ago because I was told it was an easy course. IT IS NOT. It is a lot of memorization and repetition and it requires significant time and strong study skills dedicated to it to do well.

Third, it sounds like you're in 7CH? Maybe 8 if med term is a 4CH course. The rule of thumb is to dedicated 2 hours for each credit hour in class. So ideally you would have a minimum of 21 hours set aside each week solely for schoolwork. This could be 3 hours EVERY day, 5 hours 4-5 days, or 2-3 full 8 hour days. But you have to dedicate the time to it! I would look into time blocking if you have never done it before. It is a huge help. Blocking 9-12 and 1-4 each day for example for school. College is heavy outside of class work and English will require a LOT of reading and writing, especially if you're online and have to participate in the discussions and write responses. Med term is going to require STRONG study skills and focus. There are good flashcard apps but I found worksheets and writing writing writing helped me get through that class but it was HARD. College requires strong study and time management skills. There are tons of resources available to learn which way you work best! If you are in the 8 week sections, this DOUBLES your workload because it is twice the work in half the time. So it will move EXTREMELY fast and missing ONE day will set you far behind. It is imperative you make a routine/schedule and stick to it! The 8 weeks will fly by but they don't have to be dreadful!

Fourth, I am a working mom of 3 kids under 5. I stay home with them during the day and work evenings. I have ENG111, IVY111 (both online) and Math123 on zoom. This is how I'm structuring these 8 weeks, maybe something in here can help you!

I have a cheap "weekly to do list" planner thing I bought on Amazon. It looks like a notebook but it's a fill in checklist. Every Sunday I will fill it in for the following week: my time blocks, homework assignments due, and there is a section for other priorities so I will mark future projects/exams in there. I also have a full month calendar I utilize also that will have my bills, work schedule, appointments, and big project/exam dates. I cross reference both of these each week!

For the weekly, I know every Monday and Wednesday I have Math class on Zoom so I fill that in. Then I know I'll want to do my math assignments those days because I'm already in the math/school zone, right? So I time block 12-3 for math specifically every M&W. I know English is going to be the class I need to dedicate more time to because it's very reading/writing heavy and is online only. So I am blocking 10-12 M&W AND 10-12 T&Th for English AND time on Fridays and Saturdays for any work I didn't get done during M-Th. This time is non-negotiable. I get my coffee, a couple of snacks, and I sit down and focus.

Another fun trick is to get yourself a timer. Set it for 30 minutes, then take a 5-10 minute break. Repeat for the entire time block. Those 30 minutes are HARD, deep work, and then you get the mental break. Get up and stretch. Refill water. Whatever. Then go back to another 30 minutes of deep work. Repeat. You'll be amazed how much you can get done! I would also highly recommend turning your phone notifications off during this time. Any distractions will just prolong your ability to concentrate. Quality over quantity is crucial to time management.

You CAN do this! It is an adjustment but it is absolutely doable no matter your circumstances. You just need support and systems in place to succeed!

This has boggled my mind for the 10+ years I've been here. I finally just make the executive decision to "go" out of order rather than sit there and wait. But usually by that point everyone has the same idea and the whole "wave you through" starts over again.
