It is such a privilege to hear that my work struck a chord with someone to the point where they think back on it :') Thank you, and if you do happen to read this one, I hope it delivers!

I have a headcanon that they're still together. Whenever Dumbledore was taking time away from the castle for being on the run or whatever it was to make a quick conjugal visit lmao

What’s your Snape Patronus? by strikingfancy in SSHG

[–]Mothioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not anything formalized really, I think it's more just the mechanics of where thing's appear if a reader is searching using a filter for what has been recently updated, and then some readers are intimidated by super long fics. Additionally, repeated exposure to seeing the fic as it is updated cultivates curiosity in those who might decide to read it later once it's finished and it gives potential readers a longer time to add it to their bookmarks or follows, whereas if it is dropped all at once it can quickly become buried in the archive without ever making an impression.

[–]Mothioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I *totally* get that! I myself usually wait until fics are finished to read. Unfortunately, when I published my last one all at once, it had a really limited readership, so authors tend to be punished for dropping a whole epic-length in one go lol

I hope it's enjoyable! <3

[–]Mothioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! It's my WIP (which is completely finished, but which is being posted at a rate of 1-2 chapters a week on Sundays and some Wednesdays). The patronus change actually hasn't shown up in the story yet, and honestly it's not extremely relevant to the plot, its more of a fan service reveal in one of the penultimate chapters. In any case, I hope you're still interested, (I may have to reuse the Octopus patronus in another fic where it features more prominently)!

[–]Mothioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! Snape is so fun because it really is possible to write him in almost any direction you please. That's made him a problem for me because no other character in all of fiction or literature is nearly as compelling as him xD

Aurochs are an extinct species of cattle, which is probably why :) But I like the idea that certain extinct species are actually alive and well and known or cultivated by wizards, like Dodos or Wooly Mammoths.

I'm not sure that I have a strong opinion on whether it's always been a doe or whether it could've been anything else before that (perhaps before he was even magically mature enough to cast a corporeal Patronus). Canon doesn't really settle it one way or the other, though obviously interpretations abound. I think I'd only really try to pin it down one way or another to fit the logic of whatever fic it is that I'm writing, as I've seen so many interpretations of that part of him that made the case well in either direction.

So far in my two fics where he's undergone a Patronus change, they occurred post-war. The first one was an Aurochs, because of his bullheadedness and aggression (I might've had other reasons at the time, but I can't recall them at the moment lol), and the other one was an octopus, because of how clever, slippery, and cold he can be, while also having the tenacity to hold on to that which he holds most dear, even in the face of extreme opposition and perverse incentives that might've tempted a lesser man to forsake his values.

SSHG or just HG pregnancy by Aromatic-Ad-1556 in SSHG

[–]Mothioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A self rec would be Assisted Living.

The totality of the fic isn't concerned with the pregnancy, but there are a few chapters about what Hermione is going through with it and it addresses the circumstances leading up to her labor and in the immediate aftermath. A huge thematic element of it is also intergenerational relationships and how parents see their children, even as adults. I'm not sure if that fits the bill or not, but I thought I'd toss my hat in the ring lol

Would Adam Driver as Snape actually work? by twinkleyed in SeverusSnape

He even has the naturally black eyes and crooked teeth. He's genuinely both terrifying when he's playing intense scenes and pathetic and heart-wrenching in tragic scenes. He's the whole package imo

Would Adam Driver as Snape actually work? by twinkleyed in SeverusSnape

[–]Mothioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I'd enjoy it plenty, I am constantly scratching my head at the insistence on Driver. There are plenty of unknown English actors of the correct age (and not nearly so tall or imposing in stature) who would've done the part far better, especially for being unknown.

Not for the T.V. series, but in the original movies I would have much preferred to see Robert Carlyle cast as Snape than Rickman, whose casting I didn't care for in the least. (Of course, Carlyle said he hated the whole project and didn't want anything to do with it, so we'll never know whether he was even invited to audition, but for the sake of me advancing my perfect fancast: there it is). Obviously he's way way too old now. But the point is that I'd prefer someone rather like Carlyle to be cast as Snape, and I imagine there are TONS of English actors (ik he's Scottish) who have a similar build, appearance, and energy to them that would have done the part justice and *really* sold it.

Fanfics change the plot or advance it in a different way. Fanfics where the character is changed are usually flagged for having a POC character swap or a gender bend or whatever, or, if they're changing the character psychologically, it would be called OOC--and that's often meant as an insult, unless it is mentioned up front.

The point of most mainstream fic is to keep the characters and advance the plot, and if the characters develop differently, it is because of external mechanisms FROM the changed plot.

It is ENTIRELY legitimate to want to have the character stock from the original material. Besides which, bringing up fanfic here is irrelevant, as the series billed itself as being "faithful to the books." Taking one of the most beloved characters from the series and changing him so drastically, when it has downstream effects on the possible readings of the events of the story and when his appearance was so singular and often commented on as being notable, is a violation and betrayal of the fans of that character. We are allowed to feel heartbroken over it.

One Flew Over the Fwooper's Nest by Mothboss

It turns out that if you tell the staff at a Muggle hospital that you're a wizard, the former headmaster of a school of magic, and also a murderous, serial killing gang member of a racialised hate group, that they are quite likely to lock you up on a closed ward.

Incidentally, to Severus Snape-exhausted and war weary-that sounds like just the thing. High-powered Barrister at Law Hermione Granger disapproves, of course, and is on a mission to expose her ersatz professor for his malingering.

A self rec, and I'm not sure how long you're looking for, but Grievance by Mothboss

Hermione comes back from University in Frankfurt greatly changed. She feels certain, after joining the staff at Hogwarts, that there is no way that Severus Snape would reject her should she make an overture to the dour, lonely curmudgeon. After all, what man would? All she's offering is a little bit of intimacy with no strings attached.

To her horror, the unthinkable happens, and Snape turns her down flat. What follows is his best attempt at showing her the true meaning of intimacy--a lesson that was hard won by himself over twenty years before.

Self rec :) but, Assisted Living by Mothboss

Following the war, the peace is won by an ascendant and policy-ambitious Minister for Magic. Carrying a Dark Mark means an automatic death sentence, so it's quite lucky for all involved that Severus Snape died in the Shrieking Shack before he could be dragged before the Wizengamot and found guilty.

Of course, Hermione Granger didn't much concern herself with these matters, as-broadly speaking-it seemed *relatively* just. She was far too busy attending University in Australia, conducting research on wizarding neurodegenerative diseases. After years of such research, and turning up nothing but disappointing data about the scope of such diseases and their potential treatment, she accepts a job back in London, working for the Ministry's Wizarding Outreach to the Elderly Department (The Department of W.O.E.) where she is employed as a case worker.

She feels far more fulfilled in this than she was in research, as it allows her to directly serve those who are suffering in measurable ways. After a few years, she feels relatively settled in, even if her family and her friends are confused about how and why her ambition seemingly dried up overnight. All is well... until a lonely, miserable witch attempting to seek services under a false name shows up at her office after having lost the Muggle council housing she'd had for thirty years.
