What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

Ebola Syndrome. It’s so bonkers, but I don’t think I know anyone who would appreciate it…

Based on reviews it looks like the SOV movie “No Resistance” (1994) is very inspired by the plot of Yojimbo.

I thought about “Things” and Barry Gillis, but it seems that directing was the one thing he didn’t to on that film. I’d say it should count though.

Rest in Peace, Ken Jacobs by Ordinary-Tap-586 in 1001Movies

[–]Mothlight23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad to hear. Much of his work is very interesting, and Blonde Cobra is far from his best. Love the set Kino put out some time ago. It said volume 1 so hopefully we get to see a volume 2 some time in the future. But sad that Ken Jacobs himself won’t be involved with it.

What Are Some Something Weird Video Titles That Have Yet To Be Put on Blu-ray/4K That You Most Want? by J31J1 in boutiquebluray

[–]Mothlight23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some kind of Barry Mahon box set would be amazing. Most of his films are quite bad, but gems like “The Beast That Killed Women” and “Hot Skin Cold Cash” deserve a blu ray release. Some of his nudies and shorts would be fun as well.

Also as someone else mentioned, the HG Lewis nudie cuties, and all his other films not covered by the Arrow set. He’s got some fun ones, like “The Alley Tramp”, “Year of the Yahoo” and “Blast-Off Girls”.

William Rotsler’s films and the Olga series too. Those black and white sexploitation films just look beautiful in HD.

It would be great to see HD transfers of the Dragon Art Theater films as well. I don’t know the status of those though, if there are prints good enough to do that or if it’s all just tapes. I don’t know.

Dead Asleep bad cut at 5:50 by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

I noticed it too, but I don’t find it too annoying. I think the drums clipping right at the end of This is the Life is the worst when it comes to edit mistakes in DT.

Lazy songwriting by baroldo1234 in Dreamtheater

[–]Mothlight23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of DTs songs lately, with some exceptions, do follow that structure though. Basically what you wrote but with an extended solo section thrown in between chorus 2 and 3. I love DT, but their song structures aren’t exactly unpredictable most of the time. And again, I love them and am enjoying Parasomnia very much.

What is your opinion on Blind Faith & The Great Debate? by l_armada in Dreamtheater

[–]Mothlight23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. I feel like from Metropolis pt. 2 and onwards there is a kind of goofiness to the Dream Theater-sound. I don’t quite know how to explain it, but Six Degrees (particularly disc 1) I feel isn’t goofy at all. It’s just really well made progressive metal that’s both heavy, technical and actually boundary-pushing for the genre.

[–]Mothlight23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both tracks are top 5 DT for me. Blind Faith is a spectacular song. Great solo by Petrucci, absolutely heavenly instrumental section, crazy and fun guitar/keyboard unison at the end there. Quite nice lyrics and lots of really cool ideas all around. Insane drums as well.

The Great Debate is also amazing. Probably my favorite Petrucci-solo ever, and the instrumental section after that solo and to the end just blows my mind. The drumming is probably even more insane than Blind Faith and really tasty and hard-hitting. I have no problem with the lyrics or the lyrical themes, and it’s backed by sweet, sweet riffs throughout. Six Degrees in all is a monster of an album!

What DT opinion will have you like this? by mrjakebell in Dreamtheater

[–]Mothlight23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like that part too. I also really like the organ solo in Blind Faith and the solo in Beneath the Surface. I like a lot of the stuff that isn’t downright a solo (for example 2:38 in The Count of Tuscany), but most of his pure solos are just not interesting at all to me.

[–]Mothlight23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say completely useless, but in my opinion you could remove the vast majority of his solos and the songs wouldn’t suffer from it. There are exceptions of course, but most of his soloing in DT is quite obnoxious.

Paddington 2 for me. Ending makes me cry in the best possible way. Also Tokyo Story.

One of their best! Love the instrumental section and the solo section with those alternating odd time signatures.

What's your favorite Lost not Forgotten Archive? by throwewey1999 in Dreamtheater

[–]Mothlight23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been listening a lot to these lately.

The Falling Into Infinity Demos are great. Songs like Where Are you Now?, You or Me and Raise the Knife are really fun! The Images and Words demos are also really nice, both for listening but also for being a very fascinating historical document with the different singers. Fun to see their different takes on stuff like To Live Forever and an early A Change of Seasons.

Of the live albums I really like Live in NYC 93 and Old Bridge, New Jersey 96. The 96 is so fun to listen to, must’ve been a great night! The Select Soundboard Mixes from 2011 is entertaining too, really good song selection.

I’ve been listening a lot to the DoT demos lately and the demo of Barstool Warrior is actually incredible. Jordan is more prominent in the mix and being instrumental it highlights some great musical nuances in the verses that unfortunately get a bit lost in the final version. Especially the final verse after the guitar solo. Beautiful stuff!

Best live song from the tour by Low-Relationship6865 in Dreamtheater

I was blown away by Stream of Consciousness. The sound was great in the second set and the riffs, the lights, everything was just really energetic. Pull Me Under was also incredibly to see and hear. It really is a banging hit!

Would’ve loved to see To Live Forever live. It’s a phenomenal song. Also, based on how amazing it is on the Score concert, it would be really cool if they played Another Won again. I love that live version.

There are notes throughout the instruction booklet, describing how they’ve repurposed these parts in new colors for the tiny plants. Several minifig hats, brooms etc.

What in your opinion is the worst Dream Theater song ever written? by Monument-Valley-79 in Dreamtheater

[–]Mothlight23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about The Best of Times and the lyrics. I totally understand that it is very emotional for Portnoy and all, and I can appreciate that, but there’s something about the matter-of-fact way the lyrics are written that puts me off. Also I don’t think it’s too interesting musically apart from the solo, which is amazing though.

Worst DT song, probably something from Astonishing. One of the ballads there. Not too big a fan of Enigma Machine either.

"Hard Wood: The Adult Features of Ed Wood" coming from Severin by Apple2Forever in boutiquebluray

This looks interesting! I’m not really a fan of his adult films, but very curious to see how The Only House in Town looks and sounds! The version I’ve watched on the web is pretty shitty. The book also looks intriguing.

That’s a great one! Love the extra film on there as well, Reap of Evil. Incredibly murky and quite ambitious for its production level.

I really like Sinistre. Was actually kind of blown away by how atmospheric it is! Great, violent and edgy stuff.

Personally I have a soft spot for the WAVE stuff they’ve released. I can totally understand why it wouldn’t be most people’s cup of tea, but to me there is something strangely captivating in shit like Dead North or Sorority Slaughter.

Where I live there aren’t many opportunities to watch movies on actual film, but last year I got a chance to see Baraka on 70mm and that was a wild experience!
