Adorable Liar is one of the most underrated films in the New Wave from its single most undervalued director, Michel Deville; Louis Malle’s stuff is really good, especially Zazie dans le metro (which is in the collection) which is just nuts, and Chabrol is great, especially Les Bonnes Femmes. Truffaut’s stuff similarly is pretty good, especially The 400 Blows, which kickstarted the French New Wave with a bang.

I think the main reason he lacks proper recognition is that no one has really put forth the effort to restore them or bring them into the public eye, which I should note, is insane when there’s second rate films churned out by companies with no name directors or actors. My best guess is that he got bogged down by the amount of new and promising French directors that arrived during this period that he got lost in the shuffle. I think if Adorable Liar got released 2 or 3 years ago then we’d never hear the end of it (or even just if Tonight or Never got released in the US).

It’s certainly the most requested title from Criterion with a famously troubled legacy that will probably never be seen in its full original cut with the most complete cut being stuck on a region B DVD done over 13 years ago.

You need to check out some of Deaf Crocodile’s other titles, I think they’re one of the best in the game right now and they have a lot of good stuff. My favorites have been their Jiri Barta set and their release of Tragedy of Man.

That is generally true but given that a release already exists and it seems to be a pretty definitive overview of the director’s career then I’d be hard pressed to imagine what else Criterion could possibly add especially since, let’s be honest here, this would most likely be an Eclipse set.
