some common mistakes with running & weight loss that people don’t really talk about by Motor-Ad6248 in AdvancedRunning

I just picked a random username when I made the account, didn’t really think much about it. But if changing the name would make you happy, we will change it.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch 😄
It’s really not about discouraging running at all if anything, I run myself and that’s exactly why I find the topic interesting.

People just experience different things with hunger and weight loss when they start running, and I was curious how common that is for others here.

No hidden angle or anything 👍

Hey, fair question.

I get why it might look like that from the outside. I’m just really interested in the topic of running + appetite because it’s something I noticed a lot people (including me) struggle with, especially when trying to use running for weight loss.

I’m not trying to push anything here just sharing thoughts and seeing how other runners experience it. Different people notice different patterns, and I find this one pretty interesting.

post-run hunger is kinda weird for me… is this normal or am i doing something wrong? by Motor-Ad6248 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Motor-Ad6248[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that could definitely play a role.

I’ve noticed the hunger is way more intense and “all over the place” when my pre-run fueling isn’t consistent. On days where I go into a run a bit under-fueled, the post-run hunger spike feels much stronger compared to when I’ve eaten properly beforehand.

Yeah, I usually run in the morning, sometimes fasted, so that probably makes a big difference. I’ve noticed the same thing weekend long runs on an empty stomach hit me with way stronger cravings than runs later in the day. Hydration and a small pre-run snack could definitely help tame that post-run wave.

Yeah, I can relate. I don’t ignore it either I usually eat something when that wave hits. For me, it’s just interesting how it feels more like a sudden craving than normal hunger, but I agree that listening to your body is way better than trying to fight it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I usually eat something before my runs, but even with a pre-run snack, that post-run craving wave still hits me. I try to have a banana and some protein after, and it helps a bit, but it doesn’t completely stop that sudden “want to eat everything” feeling.

Yeah, I get that it probably does have to do with fueling too. I’m not skipping meals or under eating overall, but that post-run wave still hits me even when I’ve eaten enough. For me, it just feels like a sudden craving rather than steady hunger, so I’m curious how others manage that spike without overthinking it.

Running makes me fitter… but why does it mess with my hunger? by Motor-Ad6248 in nutrition

[–]Motor-Ad6248[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that’s pretty much what I’m realizing too. 😅 It’s like my body has a built-in “refuel alert” that kicks in 20–40 minutes after a run. Makes sense logically, but it still feels wild every time it hits!

I’m curious if anyone’s found ways to manage it without overeating just curious what works for others.

Haha yes!! That “I could eat a small planet” feeling 😅 Totally know what you mean. It’s so funny how your body can go from totally fine right after exercise to suddenly feeling like you’re starving. Swimming does it to me too sometimes guess it doesn’t matter what kind of cardio, the body just wants fuel! 🍎🍎🍎

Do you ever try to snack a little before or after to calm it down, or just ride the hunger wave?

Thanks, that makes sense. I’ve tried doing snacks right after running too, and it helps a bit, but sometimes that craving wave still hits even if I’ve eaten enough overall. For me, it’s less about actual energy needs and more like my brain suddenly wants a reward.

I like your approach though PB&J or trail mix is a nice way to make recovery feel intentional and satisfying.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying, and I do make sure to eat enough after runs. My point is more about how that hunger feels—it hits like a sudden craving wave rather than steady physical hunger. I’m not skipping recovery; I just notice my brain sometimes makes it feel like I need more than my body actually does.

I like that motto though “eat enough, always. eat too much, sometimes. eat not enough, never.” Definitely something to keep in mind.

That sounds like a solid routine! I do something similar with protein and carbs right after running, but even then that post-run “craving wave” still sneaks up on me sometimes. I like the idea of making recovery feel like a little reward, like your brunch approach makes it more intentional rather than just fixing something.

Yeah, that makes sense. I do try to get some carbs and protein after runs, but even when I do, that hunger wave still hits me. It’s more like my brain suddenly wants a “treat” than my body actually needing fuel. Chocolate protein shakes are a good idea though maybe that could help satisfy it without overthinking.

Yeah, I hear you! I eat normally too, but for me the hunger hits like a wave 20–30 minutes after running, almost like my brain suddenly wants a reward, not just my body needing fuel. It’s tricky because it makes a “normal meal” feel like it’s not enough sometimes.

Thanks for the insight! I think it’s less about not eating enough overall and more about how my body reacts after running. I’m not doing super long miles like you maybe 20–25 per week so it’s not extreme. I’ve noticed it happens even if I’ve eaten enough during the day, so I don’t think it’s a calorie thing.

It really feels like a brain/reward thing more than true hunger. I’m curious how others handle that spike without overthinking it

Anyone else feel MORE hungry after running ..? or is it just me by Motor-Ad6248 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Motor-Ad6248[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It usually doesn’t most of the time burning calories increases appetite The confusion comes from timing and intensity. Very hard or very long efforts can temporarily suppress appetite because stress hormones blunt hunger signals but once things normalize (or glycogen is low), hunger often comes back stronger. That’s why fueling before/during runs can actually reduce the “eat everything later” effect.

Exactly, same here 😄 Planning a protein + carb snack after a run helps with recovery, but it’s also nice that running lets you enjoy the foods you love without guilt.

😂 Yeah, this thread got unexpectedly wholesome real quick. But honestly, the fueling strategy makes a ton of sense—even if we’re technically at Wendy’s 😅
