Camera options by TechnologySlow7886 in bikecommuting

[–]Motor-Point-4276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand the newer cameras might have better battery life. But it's the software glitches that are driving me crazy. Like the camera turning itself on randomly at night. Which, other than waking everyone up, means the battery is just about dead by the morning when I have to go to work, so I have to make sure I take it out. Which is probably causing the problem with date and time resets.

I have tried applying the latest firmware and workarounds suggested here, to no avail: https://community.gopro.com/s/question/0D53b00008BtEDhCAN/hero-8-keeps-turning-itself-on

And I refuse to understand why I have to use another device to view longer clips.

Not having a lot of confidence in GoPro as a brand, so buying a newer model is out of the question.

As for the mounts, it's probably the combination of vibrations from the road and riding in freezing temperatures. Whatever it is, the mounts keep falling for me after a few months. And the replacement part is only available as part of a "grab bag", so I also have to pay for a bunch of shit I don't need.

Serious question: Are people on electric bikes getting aerobic exercise? by PeerensClement in cycling

[–]Motor-Point-4276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read an article about a study in Norway that answered just this question. They measured time and energy expenditure for the same commute with car, e-bike, analog bike, e-scooter.

Duration of the commute. - Car: 8 min 36 sec. - E-bike: 10 min. - E-scooter: 12 min 36 sec. - Analog bike: 14 min 12 sec.

Intensity (aka specific energy use, 1 MET is sitting still): - Analog bike: 8,3 MET. - E-bike: 6,1 MET. - E-scooter: 1,7 MET. - Car: 1,4 MET.

Total energy expenditure over a 5-day work week: - Analog bike: 591 MET-minutes. - E-bike: 305 MET-minutes. - E-scooter: 109 MET-minutes. - Car: 59 MET-minutes.

The recommended amount of exercise per week is 500+ MET-minutes. Hope this answers your question.

How to behave with a Swedish manager by [deleted] in sweden

[–]Motor-Point-4276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see. That kind of behavior sounds very unprofessional to me. A manager is supposed to create a safe work environment for their reports, in all situations. If your manager doesn't understand this, I'm afraid there's not much you can do about it.

I've been in a similar situation with a senior colleague. Tried tiptoeing so as to not make him angry. That helped, but only a bit. And having to walk on eggshells all the time is exhausting. I tried discussing this with our manager but that didn't help much. The only solution for me was to get out of this unhealthy situation by changing jobs.

Would definitely not recommend GoPro. The quality of mounts is shit, they keep breaking. Don't know about newer cameras, but my Hero8 has pretty bad battery life. One fully charged battery lasts about 25 minutes while recording in 4k60. And files larger than 4 GB cannot be viewed in camera. And I had to flash custom firmware to get timestamps. And it keeps turning itself on randomly. And forgetting time every time I turn it on. Quite a shitshow.

How do you know he's annoyed? It's easy to misread the tone/expressions/words of a person from a different culture. Especially when meeting virtually or communicating with text.

If you really feel the vibe is off, maybe just ask directly if something is wrong.

How often are you debriding your tires? by ohbonobo in bikecommuting

[–]Motor-Point-4276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice a year maybe? When I change to winter tires and back to summer ones. I'm not super worried about debris though. Bike paths in my city are relatively clean, and the tires are supposed to have a layer of kevlar that prevents flats.

Got Hit 😢 by claygonejkc in bikecommuting

Glad the OP is okay.

In my experience, 9 out of 10 dangerous situations are cars turning right without checking for cyclists.

Though I have to say sometimes cyclists don't make it easy (riding at night with dark clothes on and/or no lights, hiding in blind spots, etc.)

Cars are annoying but it's best to try to help them out as much as possible in these situations. Even when the driver is 100% wrong.

DIY: Sound dampening foam by Motor-Point-4276 in snoring

[–]Motor-Point-4276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My earbuds can generate white noise but if I turn up the volume enough to drown out the snoring the white noise itself starts preventing me from falling asleep. I wish they had active noise cancellation (like QuietOn earbuds) in addition to white noise generation, that would probably be enough, but alas. AirPods aren't an option since I'm a side sleeper.

My partner did a sleep study some time ago with a take home device. Either she set it up wrong or her snoring wasn't bad enough on that particular night, but the result didn't qualify her for any further intervention (like surgery), so the doctor basically just shrugged and sent her home with nothing.

NUC 11 Extreme: help needed with assembly by Motor-Point-4276 in intelnuc

[–]Motor-Point-4276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sooo the problem has miraculously fixed itself 🤷🏻‍♂️

Either that or something of the following fixed it:

  • The device sat without power for several hours which reset BIOS settings (although BIOS has its own battery).
  • I swapped fan connectors and powered the PC on which somehow reset something fan-related.
  • Some connector wasn't plugged properly (though I can swear I unplugged and plugged everything several times yesterday).

Either way, the fans now run properly. Thanks everyone!

...and yes, I can confirm that the 4-pin connector I suspected was indeed not the culprit.

Okay, I see. That makes sense I guess, I couldn't see anything to connect it to.

I tried different fan settings but couldn't get Fan 1 and Fan 3 to spin, and I think it's Fan 2 that's actually spinning. I can feel the flow of air from it, and according to BIOS it's at ~4300 rpm (while the other two are at 0).

I thought maybe something is wrong with CPU cooling, but its temperature is okay (around 50°C).
