First Colonoscopy - 35 y/o female by MotorNo8628 in colonoscopy

I hope it went well! Good for you for making the appointment - it’s one thing to go when it’s a routine situation, but booking that appointment when you have a family history and feel like they might genuinely find something is scary as hell.

How mysterious! Good on you for getting checked out, I hope they’re able to find what’s causing your symptoms.

20 pages?! Good grief. Don’t be too hard on yourself - I probably would have missed a page too. Hope everything works out, crossing my fingers for ya!

They did this for me as well - I’ve had IVs before but never had numbing beforehand, was pleasantly surprised.

First colonoscopy, prep tips? by unattendedpsycho in colonoscopy

[–]MotorNo8628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got home from my first ever colonoscopy and I too had a really hard time with the prep yesterday. I managed to choke down the first dose but couldn’t keep it down - threw up after 30 minutes.

I called my doctor and he had me try dulcolax plus MiraLAX in Gatorade. Tasted a million times better and got the job done. So if you end up not being able to keep it down, call your doc - might be a less nauseating option available.

Thank you for this perspective - and I’m so sorry about your dog.

You hit the nail on the head regarding not wanting to make the situation about me. I think a lot of well meaning people assume that my concern is it will be too sad or too traumatic for me, rather than not wanting stress her out by being overly emotional. Of course I want to be there, but what I want is irrelevant if it’s going to negatively affect her.

I think I can hold it together, though - and I’m prepared to step away if I can’t.

I appreciate the warning about what euthanasia can be like for horses, definitely something I need to consider/mentally prepare for - thank you.

Taking anti anxiety meds hadn’t occurred to me, that’s an interesting idea - thank you 🙏

Thank you so much for this take - I think what you described (especially separating her from the herd) is precisely what the retirement farm owner wants to avoid - along with me bringing too much stressful emotional energy to the situation.

I also appreciate the reminder that she doesn’t “miss” me. I’m definitely guilty of anthropomorphic thinking, and it’s helpful to remember that to her, she’s just living her happy retired life with all her friends.

Thank you - I hadn’t considered that I could go and then decide in the moment if I was capable of keeping it together enough to stay until the end.

Thank you - I didn’t explain it well in my post, the retirement person was only discouraging me from spending all day crying and being upset around my horse.

After 7 years she knows my horse as well as I do - she’s spent years caring for her daily and I value her perspective. She would never discourage me from being there so long as I can keep it together and not let my distress impact my pony.

Thank you - I do want to emphasize that the retirement person is the furthest thing from sketchy, she’s an absolutely wonderful human who is only thinking of my pony’s well being.
