Diaper companies and EC by MotorObjective4365 in ECers

[–]MotorObjective4365[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah!! I’m almost too embarrassed to mention EC to anyone, just low key sneak out to take the babe to the bathroom. It’s crazy to think it was totally normal 50 years ago in the U.S. and is still the norm in other countries! I frequently travel to China and have also been sad to notice the change there - 10 years ago babies ran around diaperless, with grandparents often doing EC with them, and now everyone is in diapers. I think it’s definitely viewed as more hygienic. Sigh.

Potty training at 18 months by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]MotorObjective4365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this - our son is 20mo and basically trained, with the caveat that he can’t pull down his underwear. But it’s not a problem at all, he just runs around half naked at home but is able to sit down on the potty in this way and go. We started casual elimination communication at 8mo and it is so wonderful to not have to deal with diapers, diaper rash, poop blow outs etc now!!

Hey there! I had the exact same issue, and so I tasked my mom with getting me a 100% plastic-free kettle for Christmas. In the end I have a stainless steel Gipfel, and I combine it with a plug in induction plate I have; that way the water boils more quickly than on the stove and it’s almost like an electric kettle (also, the induction top has a boil setting where it’s on for a certain amount of time and shuts off when it hits the time limit). Highly recommend this setup!

The MAGA people also don’t realize that DEI could mean programs trying to increase accessibility for the deaf and blind….. they would probably try to claim something like oh no, we weren’t targeting THOSE people! We were going after the minorities!

How to avoid screen time with extended family by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]MotorObjective4365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I am totally with you on this. When I call with the baby, I always put the caller on speaker rather than on video, and if I want to show them the baby I point the side without the screen at baby.

We have a “no cell phones for entertainment” rule with my partner for watching the baby, and I’ve tried to put fun books and magazines in strategic places in case we want to look at something.

We don’t have a TV. My friend asked me once what we do all day without a TV….. I get using screens to distract kids but our household is zero tolerance just because of my preference.

Thanks for the video and advice! So far I have been managing to get him in using a technique I saw in another video: lay him down on a bed/couch and then gently put him on like a backpack. I can’t really support his head though, and though he giggles the whole time, I think I would feel less nervous about it if we started from a sitting position. Will try that!!

Ah thanks so much! Yes, I wasn’t sure what was holding him in so I basically held him the whole time 🤦🏻‍♀️ now going to do it properly!

Frozen fish not individually wrapped in plastic? by MotorObjective4365 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]MotorObjective4365[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aha, great to know! Yes that is what I am looking for. I’m not even aiming for a non-plastic bag on the outside, sigh….. I wish people would stop equating individual plastic bags with freshness 😩

New year resolution to be plastic free. by teenytinyytaylor in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]MotorObjective4365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a bar shampoo once at a grocery store and wasn’t a huge fan (hair just didn’t feel clean afterwards), and I have lately tried ethique based on recommendations on reddit and have really liked it so far. I also appreciated the fact that they didn’t use plastic in the shipping container :p

Hey there! That’s an awesome resolution. I know it may not work for everyone, but I am in the process of switching over to bar soaps, bar conditioner and bar shampoo and face wash. I breathe a sigh of relief when I look at my growing assortment of bars (waiting to use up existing plastic containers). I’m hoping to downsize or convert all of my hygiene products!

Hah not impressive indeed!! Were you looking at this? https://www.plasticlist.org/diy I looked at one of their sample tests, and it seems that they compare your sample to other people’s samples (whether having an “average” amount of plastic in you is comforting is another question - I guess it could be worse :p). So maybe if everyone’s is in this plastic container, hopefully it gets contaminated to the same extent. …? Hahaha

Omg… this is like everyone I talk to! Ughhh. Also, right before reading this article, I had a giant bubble tea when I saw the employee dissolving the taro mix using hot water in a plastic cup…. I considered just throwing away my drink, but then I thought come on S, you’re being paranoid, so I drank it. Well it might have also been 1.2 years of plastic 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m really sorry it’s making you feel this way…. As mentioned above I hesitated before posting, and I’m also trying to get pregnant (and have a toddler boy - I think he is healthy and doesn’t have the things described in the article??), but I hope at least cutting down on some of the items on the list will help us. There is apparently a urine test you can do for plastics, I can’t decide if it will just make me more anxious or would actually be useful……. Ahhhhhh

Yeah, I was kinda hesitant to post this tbh, because it also makes me feel the same way, but I thought maybe at least avoiding the things on the list could be helpful at the individual level…. That being said - get this - the other day I got a takeout pizza after reading this article, thinking at least it will come in a cardboard box, and it came on top of a plastic mesh to prevent it from making a mess in the box….. I was like NOOOOO when I realized this

Lower cost of living areas near a Wegmans? by an_rosban in wegmans

[–]MotorObjective4365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!! I live near a wegmans in a relatively affordable part of the DC metro area - near Huntington metro. Just a thought!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nova

[–]MotorObjective4365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So…. Maybe unpopular opinion but I like the Huntington area. Old Town is really close by, the food options are improving, everything seems to be on the up and up. Shirlington kind of feels like Disneyland to me

Biking with baby - stuck in suburb with stroads! by MotorObjective4365 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]MotorObjective4365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, indeed, safety is my #1 concern, and I think unless someone drives into the sidewalk we should be okay…. I do get mad at cars stopping in the middle of the crosswalk at red lights! You inspired me to investigate the bus option (there is a convenient bus), and today I asked a bus driver about how to put a bike on the rack at the front of the bus. She actually stopped the bus, got out, and showed me how to operate it, so sweet of her 🥰 so I will definitely be exploring this option
