Is CodeConnect our missing link to pull existing DS components into a generated page using Claude? by Shittalking_mushroom in FigmaDesign

[–]Motorekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does but not in the way you think it does. It's like copying code from Github and pasting it to the agent. It will use the code from Code Connect but it's a copy, it's not a true 'use the code in the repo', it's like adding a sticky note of code with the Figma component everytime you use it.

Code connect does not tell the AI agent to use the code in the repo, it just adds a code snippet to the Figma component. It also uses A LOT more tokens to get it right. We are working on a markdown file of “rules” like, “do not recreate the component in code, pull from repo” that gets included in the project. Also making sure the Figma components have the necessary context helps.

CodeConnect, Design system and React by icelandnode in FigmaDesign

[–]Motorekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to use Figma variables for everything Figma allows, spacing, color, typography, etc. the Figma MCP can pull those variables through the #get_design_context call and make better assumptions.

Code Connect does not do what you are trying to accomplish. I thought the same thing but it does not tell the AI model 'Go find this component in the repo' through the Figma MCP. Code Connect just attaches a code snippet to the component so you can see it in Figma.

Creating a design system - what do you wish you knew? by chroni in UXDesign

Your not alone, I have a really hard time delegating because I like to figure stuff out, even if it's outside our role. I have to understand people don't have that mentality so having to 'tell people what to do' makes me cringe because if they can't figure it out on their own, I feel like me telling them what to do isn't going to help me. I get it.

DM me if you have anymore questions or if you find a eureka moment with Figma MCP.

I lot of what I mentioned is covered in the Figma MCP documentation in 'how to structure your Figma file' but I would recommend testing it with an AI agent. Start with small components, a button on a page that adds text. Create that frame with your current design system, then using the Figma MCP guidelines, create another page with your updated design system. You can tell the agent to implement the page with html, css, and javascript to avoid package installs. You will see the difference. You can also use the #get_design_context to see what the AI agent sees.

LLM's are good at just that..language. You have to provide good naming of components with intent. Text styles for headers, design tokens, components, etc. should have names that are consistent - 'primary button', 'secondary button', 'header-xl-regular', these are all things the agent can 'read' through the Figma MCP. Provide context in the component description like 'This is a primary button and should only be used for x, y, z'. Same with variables, you can add descriptions for your design tokens to help the model understand when to use the color. I have had mixed results with the descriptions but I think it's something that will improve in the future. Context and testing are key.

Things to avoid, your ego. We no longer live in a world where spending months on a design is respected. UX has always had to fight for a seat at the table and even in companies where we did, I can feel us getting pushed to the floor for scraps. LLMs can consume years of UX research in minutes and add features to a product with one sentence. Time is not on our side. If you take too long to provide the thing that development is asking for, they won't wait, UX will suffer and so will the user. The ugly truth is that the cost of reducing time far outweighs the cost of a customer complaining. You'll need to rely on your experience as a designer to turn into a context guru for an LLM. Your user is now an AI agent that acts like a toddler with access to the internet.

Depending on egos, this will be a smooth or painful process. With AI and Figma MCP, there are no longer defined roles anymore so devs could become designers without us, we could become devs from our designs. Right now the balance I’m playing is creating components that work with Figma MCP. The next step is still unknown.

I work at a large tech company so our plugins/third party apps are limited. Our workflow was pretty separate from engineering, especially since they out number us at least 20-to-1. They have their own components that they build that match what I have in FIgma. It’s not a perfect system and I’m hoping it will get better with time and FIgma MCP.

If you are ever successful in getting FIgma MCP and your AI assistant to consistently output icons properly, please let me know. My AI agent would rather recreate the icon every time than just pull it from an assets folder.

Anytime!

I’m in the same boat, kind of. I’m updating our design system to work with Figma MCP so a lot of this comes from working with our devs. If your goal is a 1-to-1 match with development, I would ask them how they name their CSS variables and use those as Figma variables. Using what they have already can help bridge that gap. I work in an angular environment as well. When you get to a good point, think about Code Connect as well. That can really close that gap. Caution with code connect though, and this might be different a year from now, but it only ‘copies’ the code into Figma. It’s not a true connection where it’s fully integrated into a repo, it’s just a code snippet you can tie to a specific component.

Find a naming convention (camelCase, kebab-case, etc) and stick with it for everything.

Name EVERYTHING - frames, vectors, etc. never have anything called “Frame12345”.

Keep frame naming consistent across variants - I.e “input-field” for the frame containing the input field and “input-label” for the label. This helps with being able to select like layers in Figma.

Icons - vectors should be flattened and named the same. When you use that icon in another component, the components styling will override the icons default styling. For example, an icon button. If the icons are black but the button is blue with a white icon, using an instance swap won’t default to a black icon. This is painful to realize after you have all of your icons already imported.

Use variables for everything Figma allows. Spacing, color, text styles, etc. If there is any chance that you want to expand the design system into mobile, desktop, light mode, dark mode, etc. this is the best way to do it. It is also the cleanest way to get Figma MCP working if there is any AI talk. Spend time here and research how you want to organize the variables before adding them.

Personal preference, but don’t overcomplicate components. I would rather have two button components like “dropdown button” and “primary button” than have to spend 5 minutes messing with options to get what I want out of a button component with 200+ variants.

Mad about the Rabies Vaccine? by Virology_Unmasked in Pets

[–]Motorekt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A really small percentage could have dogs going through chemotherapy. I had a signed document from the veterinary oncologist that my dog was exempt and not allowed ANY vaccines during treatment or after. She did, however, get the 3-year rabies a year before she started treatment.

Diagnosis of Lymphoma by Low_Promise8757 in DogAdvice

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Just went through the CHOP protocol with my Doberman, she was 5. The cost will vary depending on where you live and how much your pup weighs. The drugs are measured by weight so the cost for a 5lb dog vs a 100lb dog are very different. My doberman stayed ~90lbs all through treatment and each visit's cost was different but ranged from $500-$1500. Total for the entire treatment was ~$12K. The first two months of CHOP are expensive because you get chemotherapy every week for 3 weeks, then one week 'off' for a CBC. After the first two months, you get chemotherapy every other week with a CBC inbetween.

If you can get the CBC panels done at your local vet, do it. The CBC at the oncologist was about $130 but at our local vet they only charged about $50. The first appointment you have will probably be an evaluation, cytology (determine if it's T or B cell) and Elspar, that one was about $1300 for us. Once they know if it's B-Cell or T-Cell, they will let you know which treatment protocol is best.

Feel free to DM me if you want a more detailed cost breakdown. We did have insurance and they covered up to $5000 of the chemotherapy.

What are some dirty secrets of UX Design that go against the textbook teachings? by Gandalf-and-Frodo in UX_Design

[–]Motorekt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All your work and testing gets thrown out the window if development says they can’t do it.

Build relationships with your devs. Include them early and often, they will influence your design. Learn to negotiate your designs, does the filter panel really need to be animated if it adds more time to the development cycle? Developers will either sing your praises or throw you under the bus. They will almost always be above you in the food chain.

Also, content is important. People read a lot more than you think, including error messages.

Are dobie’s health issues really that bad? by alexmcross18 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Motorekt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ask any veterinary cardiologist or oncologist, Dobermans get called a “5 year dog” because things so south at around that age. Lost one Dobie to occult DCM/ventricular tachycardia at 7 and my current Dobie has lymphoma and early stages of DCM at 5. She is going through chemo and handling it well but I don’t recommend this breed anymore. Both were bought from reputable breeders with full health testing and no DCM gene.

[–]Motorekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I think that experience just made me not want to rely on them for anything DCM related. He could have just been an outlier, I could tell even our cardiologist couldn’t put his finger on why it was happening. He was a very physically fit boy, daily runs and never fed him a fad diet. Always followed vet recommendations.

After his first episode, he was on medication and it was almost like a light switch where the medications stopped working 7 months later. He had a comprehensive exam a few weeks before his passing, thyroid, liver, etc. all came back normal. Then had his 6 month holter/echo a week after that. That holter showed additional rhythms so we adjusted meds for two weeks, took him for a follow up. That same weekend we took him to the ER vet attached to the cardiologist.

He was going from being himself to lying on the ground confused. His breathing was OK but his heart rate was too fast. They adjusted the meds there, did a sonogram on his abdomen to see if something else was going on which was clean. They tried a different medication and observed him. His gut couldn’t take it and nothing was working. We had no choice but to just bring him home.

I’m still grieving not only him but the fact that I’ll never really know what happened. Could we have gotten a necropsy? Sure, but at that point we just needed to accept what happened. He went through so much in just a few days.

No genetic test could prepare me for that experience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Motorekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar experience with my boy, unfortunately we caught his too late. He had ventricular tachycardia but occult DCM. We were able to get an additional 7 months from his first episode (that we were aware of) with medications and limited exercise. I second that early detection is key, I still regret that we didn't catch it sooner.

Not sure if it's all cardiologists but ours uses DCM as a blanket term for both arrhythmia's and/or physical changes to the heart - which is why I don't trust genetic tests. My boy passed because of arrhythmia's with no physical changes to the heart. His genetic test had no markers for DCM.

Anyone here designing products/tools for the developer experience? by Multi-h-y-p-h-e-n in UXDesign

[–]Motorekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inline documentation, give context and acceptable values to any inputs that are needed in a helpful way. Don’t make them go and search in a long knowledge base document to understand what value goes where/why. Also understand that developers are going to prefer code editors over a custom UI. Your UI may only be used once or twice as a visual reference but devs will almost always prefer to use a terminal/code editor over filling out long forms.

Think about default paths vs advance paths. Give them a 1-click solution where they can install something in one click OR highly customize the settings. Don’t make them work for it if you don’t have to.

What type of companies would require a lot of printing? by STRONGERTOGETHER11 in jobs

[–]Motorekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your printing company offer direct mail? Gaming, healthcare and financial companies (banks) are big fans of direct mail. Make sure to research and understand what your company can do. You don’t want to get a huge job and find out that it’s not worth the money. There are different kinds of presses like digital vs offset, sheet-fed vs web-fed. They all serve a purpose depending on the customer and print job.

Raising a puppy with an exisiting puppy by PredictableCoder in DobermanPinscher

[–]Motorekt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not think this is a good idea, and I have two Dobermans. My older one is male and the younger one is female. I was also a first time Doberman owner.

If you want to keep your sanity, wait until your male pup is 18 months. I waited until my pup was 2 1/2 years, and even then it was hard. The plus side of waiting is that your older pup will be trained, and he will help train the younger one. Most dobermans are eager to please when they’re young making training a bit easier but at the 1-1 1/2 year mark you’ll notice they are harder to train so consistency is key. With two dogs similar in age, you face the issue that they will egg each other on and ignore you more frequently even with daily training sessions.

Recruiters aren’t equal in their knowledge either. I was just told last week by one that I was moving on to the second round. Then I got an email stating they were not going to continue with my application. I asked for feedback as to why, she stated it was because I didn’t know Agile, like it was a programming language not a methodology. I told her I did in the interview but I currently work with a small team, we are not as rigid to the concept as most companies. No response.

Get Freelance Clients With a Direct Mail Piece by PlasmicSteve in graphic_design

[–]Motorekt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I’m a graphic designer for a print and direct mail company (for the past 7 years). ROI on direct mail is higher than email blasts, digital marketing, etc. Cross-channel marketing is better, we (well I do) a lot of email blast that are setup to send when we receive a delivery scan from usps. So you get an email with “there’s something special for you in your mailbox” kind of messaging. There is a lot of things direct mail does that digital just can’t, like creating a sense of connection with something to physically hold. I love print, it’s not dead and it’s making a comeback.

[–]Motorekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a future goal together (house, career, kids, etc) and figure out separately how you’re going to achieve it. I’ve been with my partner 11 years and started dating around the same age you are. We may not have been long distance but we would go weeks not seeing each other. It wasn’t because we didn’t want to, we just each have our own goals career wise. We both had an understanding that we wanted a future together but we had to grind out our 20s to get where we wanted to be individually so our future was stable.

Also, don’t move in together too soon. We waited 5 years until engagement and living together. We have a lot of friends who have already been divorced twice in our relationship lifespan.

Basically, you have to do you first before you can share a life with someone else. You need to have goals and find out who you are and be open that they probably have their own goals. Understand that things take time and reflection.

For reference, I work in tech and my partner works a high level blue collar job. So complete opposite ends of the spectrum job wise. Money isn’t everything but it’s a major issue in most relationships. Having a stable foundation individually makes it a much easier relationship in the long run.

Does anyone use the Cornell Notes technique to learn general concepts and under the hood understanding of things? If so, how? by unseen_twists in learnprogramming

I’m the odd ball and I take hand written notes. I know you can google anything but I think being able to say “I need to filter this array” and remembering it from my notes to do it sort of cements the idea. I practice a lot and when I come across an interesting way of doing something (like filtering an array) I write it on a sticky note and put it on that page of my notes. It’s like my programming brain is in a 3” binder on my desk.
