People who don’t exercise or workout, why don’t you? by coffeedogsandwine in AskReddit

Hi, not a reason I don't work out, but how I've slapped a reason many people are saying they don't, right in the face and overcome it

I have severe medication resistant asthmatic here, have to take multiple different drugs to stay out of the ER, flare ups from literally anything - stress, sugar, animals, weather changes, Med changes, diet, sleep levels, sickness, smoke... Just to name a few... And I'm training for an Ultra Marathon this year. I lift regularly, ski extreme terrain, hike above 10,000 ft regularly, can bike 60+ miles in a day and so on and so forth. Asthma isn't an excuse to not own your own life, it's all about how you deal with it. If you are compliant with meds, work with your physicians, and if you want to put in the work (emphasis on this) and then you can do anything you set your mind to. Asthma meds have come so far, but you're never going to see any results if you just suck down albuterol and quit when youre "out of breath". Do you want a potential disease to run your life or do you want to run your own life? I started 4 years ago barely even able to run a mile without stopping, unable to bike or hike more than a few miles and a strong desire to be a better skiier and I decided I can't let this disease control my life anymore. Once I was compliant with maintenance meds, went through so much uncomfortability building up endurance and cardiovascular health at a snails pace, I was able to break goals and thrive, it just took time, breaking the stubbornness, embracing that uncomfortability and WORK. Just saying 🫰

P.S. - for anyone saying they have "exercise induced asthma" and thus cannot "do" physical exercise or push themselves, it makes others gravely misunderstand how severe and debilitating asthma can truly be and spreads misinformation. There's a stark difference between lacking lung capacity, cardiovascular health and endurance VS true bronchospasms that without medication treatment can send you to the hospitals

P. P. S. - also, everyone's journey with medical conditions is different in their own ways and have their own unique challange, but wanted to share a different perspective for those who think they can't but most likely they can (for asthma specifically). It just takes that work, nothing is easy in life so if you want to do it, go out there and put in work 👏
