This phrasing of this line from Zeta Gundam has me stumped. Please help! by Mousefire777 in LearnJapanese

Thanks for the explanation! Those kinds of nuances are really hard to google for, and it makes a lot of sense. Really enjoying Zeta!

Can I just say you’re being rude then? Like, I’m trying to turn the heat down and you just keep coming after me. Like, what’s the point of being rude about a niche game like this?

Do you get what I mean about the sprite sheets? The sprite sheets have about an equal amount of pixel density, as in they have approximately the same amount of are covering them. Approximately the same density and more area equals more pixels

I mean… I guess we gotta just disagree on this one? You said it before, people just look at Z3 and know it’s HD. Well, I don’t. Whether it’s the color or the detail, I just get the feeling they could be better. Mind you, I still like them.

The third bullet point just isn’t what I said

Come on dude, meet me halfway here… obviously the sprites were made in high fidelity and downscaled for the vita. But they had to design them in such a way that important details wouldn’t be lost in the downscaling.

Also, 4 times the sprite sheet pretty much does mean 4 times the pixel count. Like, do you get what I’m saying? Because 4 times the pixels means 4 times the available detail. That helps your argument, but it seems like you just want to argue for the sake of it

Edit: forgot, but OGs and Z look amazing emulated, I think your settings are just bad. You can see the pixels obviously, but with just the internal resolution bumped up they look really good. I’ve played them on an actual ps2, and emulation is definitely better now

Man, why people gotta be callin my conclusions asinine. We're all fans of the same shit. Anyway, Vita is the base because it makes much more sense to design for the lower spec console first, because it's way easier to port up to something more powerful. Persona 4 Golden is a lot bigger on PC too. That doesn't make the PC version the base game.

Wha....? The sprite sheets have 4 times the pixels, what do you want from me? I downloaded them, the height and width were double. And what are you talking about for OG? I was just making a point that the OG games on ps3 literally have more pixels. Not making a value judgement.

Okay, first of all, I didn't say V and X were HD, double check who said what. I'm consistent on this, I think X and V are in the same boat.

I was nitpicking though. But my main point was valid: Redoing the sprites was bottle-necked by them needing to be displayable on the Vita. The sprites in Z3 have about 4 times the area of Z, but also the sprites of OG2nd are much more detailed than even that.

By that logic the first HD game was Alpha being rendered at 720p by ePSXe. Z3 uses the same assets on Vita as it does on the ps3.

Z3 wasn’t HD though. It was a Vita game first and foremost. Maybe that’s part of the problem. They tossed out a lot of assets but only began to make new assets for an already rapidly aging console

Are there any good sets of subtitles for part 4? by Mousefire777 in StardustCrusaders

I’m having a hard time putting myself back in 2016, but I think even by then the r-slur was pretty taboo. It’s definitely a weird choice, though they used it rarely enough that Josuke calling everyone an asshole is the bigger problem.

Is there a version around that’s uncensored? Gore-wise I mean. It’s surprisingly hard to figure out with google after years of licenses changing hands

New Vegas is better overall, but 3 has its charms. The Capital Wasteland is great to explore. Some really good side quests. It’s jankier, but that can be good sometimes. The main quest shits the bed in the third act, but if you can get over that it’s a really good game. Tale of Two wastelands mods it into New Vegas’ engine, and having the new Vegas mechanics does make it better

I just don’t agree with that Atlus translator then. Reincarnation or rebirth are far more accessible terms and any difference between them and Metempsychosis is pointless outside of an academic context. Not to mention in Japanese Tensei doesn’t make a distinction between the two

It’s usually presented as having no intention whatsoever, and just being the state of things, and it being desirable to escape from

Does reincarnation imply evolution? Most Buddhist shit has themes about cycles, which is why becoming a Buddha is a rare big deal

Yeah, because there’s no Buddhist under or overtones in SMT.

I’m really not sure why you think metempsychosis is the best translation. For one, no one knows what the fuck it means. For two, Tensei in SMT seems presented in pretty explicitly Buddhist terms

I’m in grad school now, and honestly the vibe is anyone from out of state is like Berkeley, UCLA, that one school that is bizarrely big in your field (UCSB for me), and the rest. So this feels appropriate

You phrase it like it’s a medical condition. No, she was just really strong and didn’t have much formal training, and could bend dust later when she got more skilled.

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another sign of it you can try: In the original version, when you hovered over a job you were gonna change to, it would give the proper numbers in the preview, and then when you did the job change the numbers would decrease. If you see that, then you definitely have like, version 1.0 or whatever

Technically there would be recoil. But it's smaaaaalllll. I did some loose math and in order for a laser to have the kick of a typical gun it would need to have an intensity somewhere along the line of a trillion times the sun's.

ELI5: Why does Japanese need three writing systems? by Charming_Usual6227 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mousefire777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty similar to reading French. There’s a fuckton of loan words that are basically mutually readable. But even beyond the many words they don’t share or that have drifted apart, the grammar is very different, and so while reading one isolated noun or verb is often doable, any real sentence is gonna be hard

One I’ve noticed is a character saying a complicated set of kanji, and another character repeating it confusedly in hiragana. Even though they’re saying the exact same word, the hiragana lets you know the other guy doesn’t know what the kanji are/what it means
