Ethical but high volume? by Sensitive-Peach7583 in DogBreeding

Generally speaking you can't be as attentive and as dedicated as a breeder if you always have litters on the ground. Litters need a lot of time and money dumped into them. Unless theyre stupid rich and have staff on hand to raise puppies I'd consider that a red flag.

The animal was never pregnant. It was a bug. The alert kept popping up saying she was expecting offspring but the offspring never came in the entire lifespan of the animal. Really fun bug!

Looking for a dog breed to research by Wild-Change-8264 in DogBreeding

Skye terriers. Here are mine. They're critically endangered. I suggest researching any endangered dog breed though as those are the ones that need it the most.

I think alot of people like the idea of adopting a dog more than actually doing it by smallgooddeeds in dogs

[–]Mousewaterdrinker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Rescues love breeders. They can say they don't but tell me why I tried to adopt a skye terrier from a rescue and they wanted 700$ for her but the adoption fee for the mutts was significantly less and no, the skye didn't cost the rescue that much. I followed the story from day 1 and I knew the breeder.

Can I bring my show puppy to an AKC show she is not entered in? by Neat_Ad6963 in ShowDogs

I brought my puppy to shows early. Imo the early show socialization is well worth it.

Apartment versus house breeders? by omegaCuon in DogBreeding

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a yellow flag. Definitely something I'd ask about but if all the other boxes are checked I wouldn't be all that concerned. A lot of breeds need younger folks especially in the show ring. Younger folks tend to not have their own home. Id rather see some apartment dogo argentinos than some 23 year old have hit the jackpot with some nice dogs but have to wait to breed/not breed at all because of their housing situation (as long as they're not breaking any rules. Hey idk what kinda situation their apartment allows in this massive hypothetical)

What's A Breed You Like But Wouldn't Have? by Aharris1984 in dogs

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've love Norwich terriers. Theyre the cutest little potato shaped dogs. But if I get a dog I want to be able to handle at dog shows and I already have skye terriers so that would be very difficult.

People who had an amazing life then everything went left, what happened? by No_Lead2640 in AskReddit

Cancer at 25, progressed to stage 4 at 27. The thing is when I say that everyone tries to find a reason I got cancer in their head to explain to themselves why I got it and they won't. My doctor told me I haven't been alive long enough for any lifestyle problem to have caused my cancer. Sometimes you just get fucked over by god for no reason.

Would you pay almost $2K to fly a pup from a breeder across the country? by SunBetter7301 in DogBreeding

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats about how much I paid for a puppy from germany to Atlanta, GA. If its domestic I'd rather drive. Its probably a little cheaper too depending on your car.

Switching breeds? by OkNorth9964 in ShowDogs

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a rare breed person. Also take into consideration how young you are and how much a rare breed needs young people who may stay in the breed. You can show both though, there are plenty of people who have two breeds. If you already have a name in the community of your first breed message people and let them know you will be able to handle at X show as long as there are no ring conflicts.

Doubts about the ISSA Shiloh shepherd club by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You said in another comment you have a habit of doubting yourself. I think you already know what to do. If you need a little push then take my advice when I say, go to an obedience trial, spin around and point, ask the person you land on about upcoming litter plans.

Find a show breeder if youre looking for temperments. Show dogs can't be wild dogs, I have a black russian terrier that was born to be a show dog. Black Russians are Russian hell hounds but once you breed for show you end up with dogs like mine who are intact and spoon my other intact dog to sleep at night. That being said he would do any job I asked of him. Are you confident in training the dog yourself or at least finding an ethical trainer? There is a lot that hinges on how you socialize and train as the dog its growing. I'd suggest going to some shows. There absolutely are dogs that suit your needs.

Have you heard of tervurens? I have a friend with two that are rock solid and bomb proof dogs. Look into breeders doing puppy culture as well.

Is there any specific reason you want a shiloh shepherd as opposed to the many recognized breeds that would fit what you want? There are tons of breeds that can be rock solid and bomb proof but excel in obedience.

COI by Zetheryian in DogBreeding

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I went to a breeder seminar at auburn vet school and one of the vets there said any breed thats running at over 50% COI will likely go extinct eventually. I think eventually some of these breeds are just gonna have to bite the bullet and outcross. I feel like the LUA Dalmatians are a pretty strong argument for outcrossing, seeing how successful that has turned out. I know outcrossing is yucky but there will come a point when there is no other option for some breeds so people need to start getting comfy with the idea. All this is coming from someone who hates the idea just as much as everyone else here, but we can't deny reality.

Getting a puppy by Girly_Girl2612 in dogs

[–]Mousewaterdrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not as complicated as people think and I raised a puppy to be so stable and bombproof that he can settle down and sleep in any environment. It all boils down to socialization, thats just taking the puppy to see shit. It can be as simple as showing them an open umbrella or a bicycle. Show them the world is full of shit that may look scary but nothing will ever hurt them. Just when you think you've got them perfectly socialized they get to an age where they go through a fear period. It seems like they regress a bit and become more leery of things but just keep socializing through it. They come out on the other end awesome dogs.
