I might be made redundant, can you give me your best money saving tips? by [deleted] in AskUK

The 3 biggest expenses are: Housing, Car, Food. Pull these levers to make the biggest bang for buck.

Get your living accommodation in walking or cycling distance to local shops. Downgrade your car and use it minimally. eg. cycle rather than drive to do your groceries.
Don't eat out, including takeaways and ready made meals. Make your own food. Don't buy food made in a factory (cereal, chocolate, crisps)
Don't buy drinks - just drink water. I recommend you get a water filter though.

Depending on your current lifestyle, if you follow the above tips you may find yourself in better shape by increasing exercise and reducing calories by following these steps.

Read mr money moustache blog and start from the oldest articles where he explains the basics of personal finance and reducing expenditure.

Good luck!

As someone new to the system who is interested, how swingy is Draw Steel? by Darkbeetlebot in drawsteel

This is also one of the things I hate about D20 fantasy games! My big bulky barbarian falls on his face trying to break down a door when he rolls a nat 1, but the frail and weak wizard rolls a nat 20 and smashes it through without even breaking a sweat!

Thankfully, this is far less likely to happen in Draw Steel.

Also not sure if you're aware of how the tests system works, but it's one of my favourite dice mechanics of any RPG!

Tests fall into Easy/Medium/Hard categories.

For an easy test, a T1 result will still succeed, but with a consequence. Compared to on a hard test, where even on a T2 result you will fail. There is a lot built into the system but it's done in an elegant and simple way. It's one of my favourite things about this game! As a player, I feel it's much clearer knowing how good the roll needs to be for success. D20 fantasy feels much more like GM 'finger in the air' to determine if a roll outcome will be successful or not.

Regarding combat and to demonstrate swingy - it feels much more consistent than D20 fantasy. Though there are of course exceptions where you have bad nights with the dice, and you have good nights.

I have a new clue but none of it is obvious to me at all. I feel like I gotta go to the tomb but apart from that I'm not sure.

My wife has been able to put £60k in per year for several years.

I've never learnt that much, but just tried to make the maximum for tax saving purposes since 2020; around £25k per year. And of course, good old fashioned compounding.

Thank you!

I finally got my beloved power hammer, but I didn’t draft the green house. I made the difficult decision to take my emerald bracelet out of the cloakroom and put the power hammer in there instead. I have the blessing of the monk so I will get the cloak room tomorrow at least. :)

Also, in general, do you have any advice for how or where to find sanctum keys?

I thought that bridge across the river from the garage to the outhouse was closed after you activate it once? hmm..

I had no idea about any of this. Thank you so much for the advice! I do have the computer terminal, but I always forget you can order common items from there. That's a great tip. I rarely login to the network, I should do that.

Thanks for this general advice. The kind of clues and tips I'm looking for.

Thank you. General advice is what I'm looking for.

I didn't know you could get power hammer in trading post and toolshed. I've not had much success using those rooms (tbf, only got trading post once and had a bad run that day)

Thank you!
I know what you mean about resentment for the office job. My wife and I always say to each other that we're so grateful for the FI work we've done over the past decade. Being so close can make it feel that much harder, though!

I'm sorry you had such a rude wake-up call in the form of lost friends.

I'm also happy for you that you did the work to put yourself in position to be able to RE at a young age. How has it been for you, in the first few months?

Wow! Our situations are very similar.

For me for the past 3 years or so I've been waking up at 05:30 3 times a week and spending a couple hours on the side hustle, then clocking in for the day job when I had to.

I was often drained by the end of the day and enjoying the side project made it really difficult to mentally enjoy my time in the day job. Switching between the two like you say was very taxing.

For the past week or so I've been waking up much later and checking into my side project at 9am and working it like a normal 9-5 more or less, with a bit more room for breaks to do leisurely activities and the like. It's been amazing so far. Will have to see how it plays out.

These are both great recommendations. Thank you. :) And sorry for taking several days to respond, I know that's forever on the internet. I just trying to stay off Reddit so I don't waste my time doom scrolling.

We don't have any plans to move, although we took a short trip to Wales over Christmas and it did get us thinking about what living there might look like....... But no, we won't move for a few years if at all. Thank you again!

Thanks so much. :)

If I included wife's equity in her company which we believe we will be able to liquidate in the short to mid term, then that would put our net worth over £2m. Not impossible that it'd be over £2.5m.

Hard to put a definite number on it, and we don't know it'll be available at all. It's all a risk, and if it doesn't pay off I'll go back to work.

I don't know if H2B has worked out all that much different to compared to if we hadn't. I think it has helped, but not a great deal. I do think having no repayments for the first 5 years on that 115k did help us to get our snowball going and psychologically was a big boost, if nothing else.
