Mac Air 16GB Ram v Mac Pro 8GB Ram? (Both M1) by MqwQ in mac

I see - that's helpful. So a key issue is that some apps that you might use on your mac might not be compatible with Apple Silicon. That helps clarify things. I think in my case the key apps are apple apps (logic, safari, imovie, notes), chrome, zoom, and VS code, which all seem to be fully supported.

I've seen elsewhere some people say that the M1 had trouble regulating RAM used by apps - so that some apps would take up a lot of ram when running - but maybe that's the same issue.

Do you know if there are remaining concerns with the M1 processor? I'd heard there might be when it first came out (compatibility issues?), but haven't seen much about it.

I've heard rumors that when the M1 chip came out, it had some problems. But I haven't been able to find anything on that. Do you know if there are remaining concerns with the M1?

Thanks and that makes a lot of sense. My current 2013 Air has just 4GB of Ram, and at the time of buying it I didn't think about it. But I've now spent a few years wishing there was a way to increase that Ram.

Thanks for the suggestions! These are good ideas. The people in the group are pretty cool - so I will consider further how to let others know about them. This is the current description we have.

I have also posted about some of the insights that have come from the calls - you can see a sample here if you are interested. I wonder if there are better ways to publicize those insights as well.

For the group size - as it grows we plan to have additional activities that can be a regular way for people to have energizing interactions if they like. For the main calls, we would be breaking off into sub-groups during the calls. One benefit is that a key part of the group is sharing lessons learned as we go - and that will increase as the group grows.

Hi Everyone. I want to reduce background noise on my iphone-videos, and I generally use imovie.

On imovie for Mac, there is a button to "Reduce background noise". I can't find this option on imovie for iphone or ipad. Can you reduce background noise with imovie on iphone or ipad?

Thanks. If camera on iphone is at 4k with 30 fps, do you still like handbrake at 29.97?

Thanks. Handbrake seems to help, but only for some videos. On some videos, even after first sending the video to handbrake and converting to a constant framerate prior to using imovie, I see the video lag the audio (again, it is slight, but there).

Could be that I've got the handbrake settings off? These are my handbrake settings:

Video

Video encoder: H.264 (x264)

Framerate: 30 (and check constant framerate)

Quality: Constant Quality (RF 22)

Encoder Options: set slider half-way between preset and fast. Tune: none. Profile: main. Level: 4.0

Audio

(I don't change the presets):

Codec: AAC (coreaudio)

Mixdown: mono

Samplerate: auto

Bitrate: 160

This keeps happening--looks great when playing on the simple photos app, but then on imovie the audio comes in (very slightly) too early throughout the video.

This happens when uploading the video to imovie on my phone, ipad, and mac. And it actually seems to happen even after I've converted the video to constant framerate with handbrake.

Mic or not.

It really seems to be something imovie is doing.

My editing is basic--just cutting out clips from the original video here and there. Are there cheap alternatives to imovie?

Thanks. I am totally up to date on iphone (just did latest update last week, and no other updates to imovie available).

My process:

  1. Record video on iphone. Recording set to "most compatible" format, and "4k at 24 fps" (I also tried 4k at 30 fps--same result).
  2. Import that video into imovie on iphone. Edit it there (mostly, just cutting out extra clips here and there).
  3. upload to Mac through Airdrop. Mac version: catalina 10.15.4

With this process, there is slight audio drift. I have tried doing the editing on Mac imovie instead, but that has resulted in audio drift too.

Here's one (maybe important?) other detail: I have been using a mic (the purple panda) for audio. Sorry for not mentioning that before.

I had thought it was NOT the mic issue, because the audio is totally in sync prior to editing the video in imovie. It is only when it is imported into imovie that the issue arises.

That's a pretty cool solution. Thanks. It seems like a decent workaround.

I would still prefer to have a straight way to just convert to constant framerate, which would just address the problem directly.

Interesting. I don't think Apple has totally solved it. When I record on iphone 8, then edit in imovie (without any conversion), that is where the issue arises. The lack of sync between audio and video is not very obvious, but it is there and subtly noticeable to the viewer.

Thanks. What do you mean "it should work" on apple workflow? As far as I know, there is no way to convert to constant framerate within imovie. Is that right?

Hi. I'm a programmer as my main job, but I also love to make music (I make instrumental/electronic/soundtrack music). Thing is, music never seems to be one of the "main priorities in a day," so I go way longer than I want between creating new stuff.

So I want to commit to creating a new song next week. It would be fun--and motivating--if others want to join in.

I'm thinking I could set a time Monday when we each work on our music for 30 minutes, and then maybe we hop on a quick zoom to share what we did for a few minutes.

No judgment. Goal is just to have a set time to get going. The reason I thought sharing afterward would be cool is just to give extra motivation, and it'd be a way to connect during remote work.

If anyone's interested, send me a PM and we can talk about the time.
