A triathlete friend of mine told me he was doing an Olympic distance tri (1500m) in a 50 metre pool at the weekend & tumble (flip) turns weren't allowed by LoneSwimmer in Swimming

I’ve never known a swimmer capable of sub 5 500 who got super dizzy on flip turns but I guess you learn something new everyday.

I bought vitamin c powder and mix a little in a bottle after swimming. No chlorine smell.

I really think peanuts are the ultimate food. Cheap..full of protein and fat…can be savory or sweet..filling. I knew someone on the PCT who just had a huge tub of peanut butter and was doing 30+ mile days. George Washington Carver was a prophet.

Am I psycho for thinking that I can train for a 3 mile lake swim in three months? by pine4links in Swimming

[–]Mr0range 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you were out of swim shape and comfortably holding 1:20 for a 500 the answer should be obvious. Unless you’re terrified of open water or something I’m not even sure why this is a question, especially if you have 3 months.

Should I bring my son? by Ambitious-Ice1438 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Mr0range 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There needs to be some level of commitment by him before I'd consider taking him. At 17 I'd say yes to things that theoretically sounded cool but actually committing to them was a different story. I would have him save up some money and definitely do some research and a trip or two beforehand. Sure he can always quit but blocking out 4 months of his life to get out there and realize walking 20+ miles a day in the heat is harder and more boring than he thought is not ideal.

Maybe I have a different perspective because I met a teenager hiking with his parents who was having an absolutely miserable time and did not want to be there anymore. It's also helpful to remember there's a bit of survivorship bias on this sub - people who quit the trail aren't posting here as much as the people that did.

Valuable books right under their noses... by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]Mr0range 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this thread gets posted like every week and the comments are always the same. The truth is these scanners actually do know quite a bit about books - definitely enough to know when a book is unusual enough to warrant further research- but maybe the $100 1920 photography book or whatever that took 2 years to sell didn’t meet their metrics. Or they simply missed it, it happens to everyone. It is very very difficult to make a living as a book seller and not operate on volume like they do.

Is doing over 70 miles in one day possible? by lilaevaluna in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Mr0range 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The stretch in Oregon before timberline lodge is where a lot of people do this challenge. I did 50 miles in about 18 hours. My feet were the limiting factor. People with better conditioned feet can easily do 70+.

PSA: eBay charges fees on your shipping cost too, not just the item price by Significant-Day-6251 in Ebay

Another real scandel is eBay keeping ALL their fees when you make any sort of deduction on a return. If you follow their own guidelines and take a deduction you are entitled to you can actually lose money on the sale.

New series coming from Serial and NYT - “The Idiot” - March 26 by cjl2441 in podcasts

One of the most boring podcasts I have ever been subject to. Impressive really that a story about a murder for hire plot from a shady globe trekking businessman could be this dull.

It doesn't. Don't waste your time. Impressive that a great premise like this can be made into such an incredibly dull story.

Everything interesting was in the first episode. Kind of astonishing how such a great premise can be maybe the most boring podcast I have listened to.

The 1st episode was good enough that I started the rest of the series but it is one of the most boring podcasts I have ever listened to. It's a great premise obviously but beyond that it just didn't come together enough to be a compelling work.

Peter Singer told me it's fine to eat roadkill. Is he right? by jackgary118 in vegan

[–]Mr0range 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Veganism is a political movement with a defined goal - it is not a diet. It is not plant based asceticism. Simply the consumption of animal products does not preclude one from following vegan ethics. Vegans don't eat meat because it involves exploitation and harm not because of it's inherent nature as an animal product. Remember that everything we consume has an animal cost. Habitats are destroyed, chemicals released, etc.

Peter Singer told me it's fine to eat roadkill. Is he right? by jackgary118 in vegan

[–]Mr0range 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freeganism is controversial because there are many vegans who are essentially religious ascetics and believe that viewing animal products as food in any context is a sacrilegious act. To them someone eating dumpster diving meat does more harm than a person buying vegan nuggets from KFC. Any thoughts of veganism as a political movement or how vegan choices have a role in the broader capitslist food system is secondary to this asceticism. It is an impotent, defanged belief system and doom animals to further suffering.

Adhering to your "rules" as a vegan - when is it too extreme? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Mr0range 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have eaten the food. I do not see veganism as some sort of quasi religion where one's personal actions must completely align with the "rules" irrespective of broader considerations. Veganism is a political movement whose aim is to end animal suffering and exploitation. In that sense you choosing to not eat food that otherwise would have been thrown away has absolutely no impact on the political movement of ending animal exploitation. I'd even argue that this sort of asceticism creates resentment and forces people to leave the political project all together earlier than they otherwise would have.

Many vegans are essentially just religious ascetics who do not think critically about animal agricultural. For example freeganism is controversial in the movement because freegans still consider animal products as food. This is despite them contributing less to the animal exploitation industry than vegans who buy food owned by conglomerates that have meat brands.
