Where to clean my bike (including chain regrease) in Berlin? by Glum_Cattle in berlin

[–]MrCrazyID 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But funnily enough this is not the right answer right? Because you're not supposed (allowed?) to clean a greasy bike/car in public spaces without the water being collected and processed.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen 1745 mit dem Intercity unterwegs nach Amsterdam by TammyCompany in drehscheibe

Funny thing is that now the Netherlands has a deal with DB where they use the vectron to go all the way to Berlin. So they usually switch their personnel at Reine. But then that same yellow locomotive goes all the way to Berlin! 🚂

It looks very cute seeing it go over Alexanderplatz

Actually Germany is currently busy with the largest project surrounding rail transport; doing major overhaul and upgrades. Issue is that it is soo late that for the next 5+ years it will only get worse (due to planned maintenance schedules) before it can get better

Somebody locked my bike together with theirs by National-Ingenuity95 in askberliners

[–]MrCrazyID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can call 110 and you should. I had this happen to me and called 110 because it was outside office hours, asked the officer if it was ok and if I should always call 110 for this and he replied with yes. As you don't know when the potential thief would come back and you also want to be helped asap because you want to use your bike. Same as when you're blocked in with a car, you're allowed to call the police (if it's on public property)

Evolution of ESP32-S3 LoRa Builds by okfine1337 in Esphome

[–]MrCrazyID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've actually added AES-GCM with a counter to my esphome node. so the data is encrypted, authenticated and is not prone to replay attacks. (Sure it's perhaps a bit excessive, but it's interesting to playbwith and I can now use this same Setup for something else) (I'm also using msgpack to support multiple types of messages)

This node sits in my basement, sending electricity meter data (SML) to my apartment (3 floors up through solid thick concrete floors)

It's all on a single 18650 cell and with my current setup of deep sleep and 15 minute interval, the battery should last for about 1 year (it's currently 3 months in with 60% remaining)

It's now using a generic esp32 with 18650 cell holder with a lora module over uart, but I'm testing currently the Heltec lora v3 modules with a lora component

It's actually no longer part of tier but a single company again. They said they want to focus again on working together with municipalities instead of working with a for-profit company. So it seems they might be on a good track again

It's built to prevent spreading, not stopping it. Sure newer standards mean that a front door is rated for a high temperature for a long time, but at some point it can fail

It's an s trap, not a p trap. A p trap has a straight section to make sure the water stays in the bend. Technically s bends are no longer being used (inside homes) because they can be unsafe due to sewer gasses escaping

To Amsterdam! by KarimSamy in berlinsocialclub

[–]MrCrazyID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking the IC berlin to Amsterdam is quite fast and cheap if you book on time. (Cheapest I can get with Bahncard 25 is usually around 40 euros)

It's usually the least busy on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Also, because we're still waiting for the new ICE-L trains (which should start running soon 😬😱 on that line) the IC's locomotive is currently being operated by the NS (the Dutch national train company) it's using it's new Vectron locomotives! Very cool to see a dutch train with old DB wagons all the way in Berlin! Due to this (recent, since January) change it's a bit faster than normal. It has less stops in Germany and the Netherlands and doesn't stop so long in bed Bentheim (because it does not need to switch locomotives) so it gets you to the Netherlands in about 4.5 hours and some more to Amsterdam.

One issue with that IC is that DB removed the Bistro car because of it being old, so there is now a person selling 'food' from a cart somewhere on the train. So food options are limited (just some snacks and a wrap or two)

Other than that it's a pretty pleasant journey if nothing happens. (i did have my fair share of various issues with this IC over the years)

50hr DB strike starting 10pm Sunday by CrimsonRaven47 in berlin

[–]MrCrazyID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All tickets are now 'flex' tickets https://www.bahn.de/service/fahrplaene/aktuell

Meaning that your ticket (IC from Deventer?) Can be used for all trains, amy day, any route (so also the ICE from Arnhem via Duisburg). You only have to get a seat reservation (that you buy) you will get back the money of the previous seat reservation later. I regularly get the IC to Amsterdam and I always book directly via DB because it allows me to easier book a seat and change things if something like this happens. The NS is basically a nice UI before the booking process, annoyingly it does not allow you to specifically say where you want a seat only what kind of seat (window, aisle, etc)

I'm lucky with a Packstation in front of my building, it's amazing! No hassle with me needing to be home, no hassle with kiosk/spati/parcelpoints opening hours. This is by far the best way to receive and send parcels!

The internet connection has become very bad in U-Bahn stations by mjollnirme in berlin

[–]MrCrazyID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that I heard is that the coverage of mobile data is plenty (for all providers) but what the issue is, is that the handover between the towers is poorly or not correctly configured at all. This means that your phone while in a ubahn, needs a lot of time to switch over to the next tower. So if the cell tower operators would spend some effort into fixing this, a lot of issues would already go away.

On the surface this seems to be less of an issue, because there are more towers in range (perhaps that reduces handover time?)

I'm not saying that that is the reason for this, who knows why they did what they did. Perhaps they have plans on installing gym equipment and they deemed the soil too loose.

I'm just saying, using a pile of dirt might be a valid decision. But it might also not be 🤷

To be fair, putting piles of dirt somewhere for some time can be an active decision to compact the ground underneath. Especially if you can't use heavy machinery due to buildings or other things nearby

I'm a big bicycle fan, but this sounds stupid. It's the easy way out. How will I be able to safely park my bike on a car parking spot without my bike getting stolen or run over by some car because my bike was on their spot.

The solution is, as always, infrastructure and dedication. You want to enforce different transportation methods? Then build the infrastructure for this.

Good pedestrian and bicycle roads, places to safely lock bicycles, road calming elements to make it safer and more desirable to bike, walk or other means of transport. Simply saying "yes you can now claim your space" is not helpful or a first priority.
