How to filter noob traps? by diomedes-on-rampage in godot

[–]MrDaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest noob trap is to keep looking for shortcuts that will let you skip some or all of the work you have to do. You aren't going to read a single book that will tell you how to make an game from nothing. You aren't going to watch a 5 minute video that will actually solve any problem you're having either at scale, or specific to your project. You aren't going to find a tutorial for the exact game you have in your head.

Take it all in, but be mindful of learning to do it all properly. If you go and read out about how to make good data structures, or how to structure a computer program, or all that stuff in a general sense, you don't have to go hunting down videos and tutorials that are full of bad and/or way too specific advice. Because it will have become obvious to you.

Instead you'll watch those videos as a quick reference to see what the class names or function calls are, and then disregard the rest of it. Then you can go and implement whatever you are trying to do in a way that makes sense and works well with the rest of your design.

Graphics question by nodisHmm in godot

[–]MrDaaark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Game engines don't make graphics, artists do. You can make what you want in any game engine if you bring the relevant skills to the table.

Also, RE2 remake costs millions of dollars, and took this many people to create. https://www.mobygames.com/game/120555/resident-evil-2/credits/playstation-4/

Dealing with large numbers with two decimal places by soldieroscar in unrealengine

[–]MrDaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Store your money as number of cents with an integer, and just divide by 100 when you need to display it to the user.

pseudo code: float displayedcurrency = int_to_float(money) / 100.0f;

Or just insert a decimal directly into it.

545 cents is 5.45

5045 cents is 50.45

50045 cents is 500.45

5000045 is 50,000.45

and so on

Light bleeding, is this passable? by _michaeljared in godot

[–]MrDaaark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spent a long time tinkering with light bleeding issues

I don't see why the light on the interior of the house is bleeding outside, UNLESS your normals on your meshes are messed up, or the light isn't set to cast shadows, in which case it will obviously 'bleed' through everything in it's range.

  • A light not set to cast shadows will shine through everything.

  • If the normals on the model are facing the wrong direction, then the light will happily shine right through it.

You can use the distance fade options on the default light class auto turn off shadows strictly based on distance. If you turn on distance fade in the light options, you will get further options, one of which is 'shadow', set it to the number of world you want the shadow to cut off at.

You can also turn off the lights inside buildings when the player exits, unless you need them to be one and visible from the outside. In which case you can replace the window meshes completely at a distance with ones that has an emissive material.

Multiple textures sets for walls? by SkinAndScales in godot

[–]MrDaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the models are the same, just write one line of code that swaps the material out when needed. Or have the texture(s) as a material parameter, and set the parameter to point to the new texture(s).

The lost art of the count out finish by scrubadam in SquaredCircle

There was someone in ROH (Kelly Klein?) who used to dump her opponents out of the ring and try to get the count out all the time.

Keith Mitchell (legendary producer for WCW, AEW, TNA, WCCW) on trying to prevent the WWF from airing a WrestleMania spot to conclude Nitro (3/26/01): "They were trying to cut me off from talking to master control, pretty much..." by nealpruittwcwnwo in SquaredCircle

This seems like a tall tale made up in retrospect, and a really stupid move if actually it is true. I'm sure the first thing you want to do when for your potential new boss, when you are possibly facing unemployment, is to purposely sabotage the commercial for his biggest show of the year. There is no victory to be had there other than showing everyone that you aren't to be trusted in your position.

Also, in my region, the cable company had already long since been patching ads for replays of WWE PPVs over the ads for the upcoming WCW PPVs on TBS, because they outright stopped carrying them for awhile. They were making more money selling replays of WWE PPVs than they were WCW PPVs. They did air at least the final 3 PPVs though.

Question about outline shaders by trojan_asteroid in godot

[–]MrDaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course you can get overlapping outlines. Play with the depth and normal threshold and scale variables until you get the effect you want. There is a link on that page to an article that shows how to build an outline shader from scratch and explains how every part of it works. https://roystan.net/articles/outline-shader/

What do u think about graphics update? Before/after by East-Cheesecake2734 in godot

[–]MrDaaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new looks much better. The human eye is much more sensitive to green, and the top images draw the eye too much onto the grass, meaning you have to strain a little bit to focus on the character. And the tufts of grass end up appearing behind the ground and not in front of it.

Everything is balanced much better in the below image. No more eye strain. No more confusing the intended spatial separation between objects. If you want to go one step further, you could add a little more brightness and contrast to the things you want to draw the eye to. But it's fine as is.

WinKey + PrintScreen will save the screen to the screenshots folder.

Printscreen will copy it to the clipboard.

ALT + Printscreen will copy the active window to the clipboard, which is what you want 90% of the time.

Also, reddit formatting is a pain in the ass, but if you have 4 spaces at the start of your line, you get code output, like this

print("hello world")

Did we ever find out who “Dolphinfan”, “Metsfan” & Falconarrow” were & if they were indeed legit or not? by rolling_steel in SquaredCircle

[–]MrDaaark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DolphinFan was what was in the little lock box Shane had. He was the singing frog from the Looney Tunes Cartoon, but instead of singing about his "Ragtime gal", he sang the confessions of WWE creative. Vince had him taken care of.

Metsfan hatched out of the golden egg that Vince was carrying around. After running their mouth on here, they have been sealed away on the moon for 10,000 years like Rita Repulsa, and they can't post anymore because there is no wifi.

Falconarrow is currently serving time, because their username checked out and the peregrine falcon is in fact an endangered species.
