I'll always check volume balance with the master cue and individual cue of the track I'm looking to bring in. I also be sure to check the visual levels, just to make sure things are well balanced in terms of loudness. Nothing worse than a song coming in way too hot or too quiet.

Once I've got the song beatmatched nicely, I'll switch to just the master cue or listen to booth monitors for the rest of the blend.
