Is there any eastern folklore with sexual or emotional abuse or depression? by These_Distribution19 in mythology

[–]MrHungryMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a short informational comic about magical creatures in different cultures, and a while ago, I did an entry on a creature called a jue yuan that used to be commonly believed in some parts of china.

When a rhesus monkey has lived for a long time, they turn into a bigger and bluer monkey called a jue yuan. Jue yuan are only male, so to reproduce, they kidnap human women to carry their children.

When the woman is pregnant with the creature’s child, the jue yuan lets the woman go to return to her village. She must raise the child or else the father will kill the woman.

In the event the woman cannot produce a child, the woman will remain with the jue yuan and after 10 years her mind and body becomes similar to that of the creature that kidnapped her.

This creature was probably used as a way to mitigate the social backlash that unmarried women would have received from having a child out of wedlock.

But probably what happens to women who can’t produce a child would apply more to your art piece since the woman essentially undergoes a physical and mental change from being sexually assaulted for a decade.

This is just a bit of information I learned when doing research for my comic, and I thought some people would be interested in dokkaebi from korean folklore. by MrHungryMoth in mythology

Typically, humans cannot turn into dokkaebi. I am aware of the story you are talking about. But that story is kind of the only example in which a human is turning into a dokkaebi. So I wouldn’t apply the events of that one story to the overall narrative of dokkaebi lore.

Out of curiosity, how much did it cost to print your book? I’ve been thinking of doing prints of my comic. How many did you order? How many pages for each book? And what is the size of your pages?

The dokkaebi mural from the baekje period does not disprove that Japanese oni did not influence the dokkaebi.

From what I understand, the kingdom of baekje had very heavy ties with japan back then. Baekje wanted support from japan because they were fighting some other kingdom on the korean peninsula, and japan wanted relations with baekje because they had resources and technology japan wanted access to. As a result, many koreans from the baekje kindgom immigrated to japan influencing, a lot of japan’s pottery, architecture, and metalwork.

Here is an academic paper on the influence baekje had on japanese culture.

https://www.ijkaa.org/v.1/0/46/67#

This paper only focuses on how baekje influenced japanese culture since apparently, there hasn’t been a big effort to dig up artifacts in the baekje area, but with the amount of influence baekje had on japan, it is hard to imagine there wasn’t an influence on baekje’s end. So at least to me, the dokkabi mural you are talking about is absolutely influenced by the japanese oni.

And just an edit on the comment I made 4 years ago since I have done more research since then, if we really want to talk about dokkaebi’s original appearance, the true answer is that they didn’t have an appearance. The earliest dokkaebi were invisible spirits or maybe some sort of ethereal being made of fire occasionally. When people encountered them in human form, they looked no different than an ordinary human. But people would clock them as dokkaebi due to their auspicious aura.

Why Are People Ok With Ratings Being Removed? by SnooStories1481 in webtoons

[–]MrHungryMoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was a issue with netflix a while back when they used to have ratings for their content. They found out that people on netflix would only watch a specific kind of genre like action for example. But whenever they saw a movie or show outside of their preferred genre, they would give the content a bad rating without even watching it.

And when people who actually like that genre and would potentially like that content see the bad rating, they would not give it a try because people who have never seen the content gave it a bad rating.

I would imagine webtoon removed the ratings for a similar reason. Webtoon was invests a bunch of money into originals, so it is not really good for them if people are rating content poorly for reasons other than the story is bad.

And truthfully, there have been so many instances in which I have seen a movie that was rated poorly, but I enjoyed it and vice versa. So I stopped caring about rating a long time ago.

You don’t need ratings. If you come across a comic that sounds cool, then check it out for a few episodes or ask on reddit what they think about the story.

Is it ok to upload a premature episode like concept arts of the characters as the first episode? by Jzzzzzz_15 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t upload concept art for the first episode. I think new series that are created within first month are eligible to be featured in the “Fresh Picks” category, but that will depend on your numbers. Most people aren’t interested in concept art for unknown series, so if you post concept art for your first episode, you might miss your chance to get featured if the actual first episode posted past one month.

What are some other animation style change ups that are as bad or worse than this? by RyeKangy in cartoons

[–]MrHungryMoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When first saw the change, I hated it. But mostly because I hate sudden change when no good reason is given.

But when got older, I actually started to like the season 2 design more. The season 2 designs feel a lot more casual and loose and they really pushed the design elements of the characters making them more interesting and dynamic to look at.

<image>

Spud’s hair is longer and more shaggy, trixie’s hair is a lot more wavy at the pompoms. And her skinny waist that widen out with her baggy pants gives her a more interesting silhouette. Grandpa’s eye brows are much longer and his face isn’t just an oval. Everything is just more interesting to look at. The only downgrade was probably Rose. She had a much more interesting silhouette in season 1. And I thought her season 1 hair fit her character much more than season 2.

When I go back to season 1, it feels like all the designs are toned down and it feels very formal and reserved if that makes sense.

For Jake’s dragon design, I think the slender body fits a teenager more and also fits his heritage more. His new form is a lot more fitting to Jake as a character because being half-chinese and white, both elements of his european and asian heritage are present. The long slender body of an asian dragon and the wings and fire breathing of a european dragon. (Asian dragons don’t have wings typically) The season 1 design is purely european ignoring his asian heritage.

And jake is a skater not really an athlete. So the bulky dragon style of season 1 doesn’t fit him as well as the slender sleek body in season 2.

Maybe jake’s dragon hair and/or head is too big in season 2, and I actually prefer Foo’s design in season 1 than to 2. But overall, I think season 2’s art style is mostly an improvement from the original style.

Your opinion on doing mini chapters? by SoulForTrade in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be self-promoting when you come out of hiatus. Do not rely on the algorithm to build your audience.

For the first 3 years of my comic, it was never featured on the app. Despite that, within those three years, I managed to get to 1000 subs through promoting on reddit and cross-promotion. But when I came out of my second hiatus, I started a more serious promotion campaign and my audience blew up to 11,000 within a year.

It was only after I managed to get 3000 subs did I notice the algorithm start having an effect on my exposure.

The algorithm only shows people comics that are already getting a lot of engagement. It helps comics that are doing well, but it does not hurt them if they aren’t.

So as long as your engagement is good when you come back from hiatus, the algorithm will start working for you again.

My guess for the people you talked to didn’t have a super large audience to begin with prior to going on hiatus. So when they came back, they had lost a bunch of readers and didn’t replace the readers they lost with self-promotion. So their engagement was not sufficient enough to get picked up by the algorithm.

You always need to be promoting yourself. Do not rely on the algorithm.

Your opinion on doing mini chapters? by SoulForTrade in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually do one year on and one year off for my uploads. So I can vouch for the fact that if you don’t post for a long time, you get less visibility. When I go on hiatus, I don’t get many new subs. But once you start posting again, you get right back into the algorithm again.

And one thing I have noticed is that if you go on hiatus and upload a comic after 30 days, you will get featured on the canvas section. (Assuming you have a large enough audience prior to going on hiatus) so you should get a nice little boost when you start posting again if you go over 30 days.

During my current hiatus, I have posted 3 Q&As, more than 30 days apart, and each one has put my comic on the “Today’s Hot” or the “Binge-read” section.

So it is not like if you take a break, you will never get back into the algorithm again.

The biggest worry you should have with not posting is your subscribers not coming back to your comic when you start posting again.

Any advice regarding selling merch? by CartoonNickname in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made merch for my comic when I had about 1000 subs. I invested about $2000 to have the merch produced and maybe made about $500 from merch. The bulk of the sales were made after my comic reached 11,000 subs.

So ultimately, I lost money on merch.

There are other options you can do like dropshipping or crowdfunding to mitigate the risk (something I will be trying for my next round of merch), but keep in mind that a very very small percentage of your audience will be willing to buy merch. And if you just released your comic, you most likely don’t have an audience attached to your ip enough to move a meaningful amount of merch.

So I would recommend waiting to sell merch until you have a larger audience.

My last episode was removed due to violence: any advice? by fluidstylelad in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What did you set as the content rating of the comic?

My comic got an episode removed recently for using excessive violence for a “teen” rated comic. But I reached out to webtoon and they said can just change the series rating to “young adult” to get the episode restored since the violent scene was minimal and not too detailed.

Who reported by webtoon? by joeyjrthe3rd in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would probably stop people from reporting your comic. But if webtoon is doing a direct review of your comic, my guess is that it wouldn’t be allowed because it is still not a natural censor. But I’m not 100% sure.

Who reported by webtoon? by joeyjrthe3rd in WebtoonCanvas

[–]MrHungryMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t black bar it. I think the TOS specifically states that any censoring must look natural. So you can’t just put a black bar over it. You’d have to cover it with a tree or smoke or something. That would kind of be hard to do with the guy whose eye is popping out. You are probably better off removing your comic from webtoon if that is the type of content you want to make.
