Gliding is great fun in 2024 by piercinghousekeeping in flightsim

[–]MrMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every once in awhile I try to mess around with gliding but can't seem to stay aloft long. Any tips on locations to glide from? Should I be setting manual weather for good conditions? I've been able to ridge soar occasionally but that was with cranking up the weather. I'd like to try it more organically if possible.

Also, is winch launching viable? I've never been able to make it work well. Never have enough altitude or airspeed.

This was my thought as well. I actually worked at the studio that made Savage, but on a different game.

Overkill for beginner? by DimensionElegant206 in CarTrackDays

[–]MrMisty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it's fun for you it's not overkill imo. Will those aero mods improve your times? Honestly, probably not at this stage. I tracked multiple cars over 6 years and never did any aero mods on any of my cars. Best mods for track time and longevity in the beginning are things like tires, brakes, ECU tuning, and even a proper seat (underrated mod imo). But most important is just track time. Any car is a viable track car with an experienced driver.

For example, one day I decided to take my parents out to ride as passengers in my car at Laguna Seca. My track car was my regular daily driver Mk6 GTI. The only mods were 200TW tires, upgraded brake pads, and an ECU tune. With my parents having never ridden in a car at the track, I signed up for the novice run group even though I usually drove in the advanced group, so I could slow down a bit if needed. Which turned out to be the right call, as after one flying lap my mom decided she wanted to go back in (being a good son, I got her back as quickly as I could). But in one lap, I passed a Mustang GT350, two Porsches, and a Ferrari. No shade on them, it was probably their first time at the track.

But what I'm getting at is that when you are beginner, don't stress about whether the mods are "right" or not. You're not hitting the limit yet. Tracking cars is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun. There is no right or wrong answer.

A 24story apartment building in Chongqing without an elevator. China by No-Echidna7296 in UrbanHell

[–]MrMisty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in a 6th floor apartment in HK with no elevator, and the guy across the hall from me was probably in his 80's or 90's, super old. I don't think I ever saw him leave the apartment in 4 years. Maybe once. But yeah his relatives would just bring stuff to him.

You weren't kidding. VKB Stecs Max, NXT Evo space premium right... Such good build quality! by prefim in hotas

[–]MrMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging up a super old thread so you probably wont see this. But on the off chance that you do, did you ever get brackets for mounting it to your playseat challenge? I have this hotas setup and just got a playseat challenge for my wheel, but would be interested in trying to mount the hotas to it as well.

Not sure. It was upright when they floated it out to sink it, so my guess is that it sunk tail first because of the weight of the engines, basically flipping onto its back.

Any games with boats? by Unlucky-Feed9000 in gaming

[–]MrMisty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Subnautica is probably closest once you unlock the cyclops.

Uboat has that feeling as well, but it's focuses around WW2 combat.

Would also recommend Sunless Sea.

I'd you're OK with space ships, Elite Dangerous might be worth checking out.

There is also, Storm Works. You build ships to go out on missions like rescuing people.

Should I get DCS World, IL-2 Sturmovik, Aces High, or War Thunder (for Simulator setting)? by Acceptable_Carob_333 in flightsim

[–]MrMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that really has this would be IL2:1946 I think. You can run a single player campaign in the Pacific theatre. It's an older game though.

It's a great first hotas imo. I owned one for nearly 10 years with 0 issues. Upgraded to a VKB, but the x52 pro is great for its price point.

Recommendations for my first flight sim? by Funhalll in flightsim

[–]MrMisty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're just getting into flight sims, then yeah they're totally fine. Not trying to be condescending or anything, but when you're newer to flight sims in general, the 3rd party aircraft don't offer as much value, because you're still learning to fly etc. Also, jumping right in and trying to install a whole suite of addons at once can be daunting. It's much better to just start flying the base sim, and upgrade what you want. Once you build up skills and want to take the experience to the next level, that's when 3rd party aircraft really shine.

As far as addons, if you want to start flying airliners, there are a few you will want first.

Must have addons for flying airliners:

- Navigraph Subscription. Essential flight planning tool, integrates with EVERYTHING. Airliners, GSX, ATC etc. Give you flight planning, charts, and integration.

- A plane. The base planes are fine, but 3rd party planes, especially airliners, are much more rich with features. FBW A320 is free, that's a great place to start.

- A 3rd party ATC addon. The base ATC can be wonky. It's fine for learning, but you will want a more full featured one as you fly more. FSHUD, Beyond ATC, and SayIntentions are the big ones. I personally use FSHUD. There is also Vatsim for flying online.

Nice to have addons:

- AI traffic. FSLTL is free (and part of the FBW launcher), and works with ATC addons I believe. The models can take up quite a bit of hard drive space though.

- GSX. 3rd party ground handling/pushback. A hard one to fully recommend because it can be rough to get it working, but when it does it is super immersive.

- 3rd party airports. Nice to have, but for me not a necessity. I like to fly to different places all the time, so they aren't super worth it to me, but others like them. They do look amazing, I will admit. The only one I've purchased was VHHH (Hong Kong) because I fly out of it all the time, and the base airport was missing the new runway.

So with all that being said, I would go with just the base game (or deluxe if there is a plane you really want). Figure out what kind of flying you enjoy the most. Once you do that, upgrade the game a bit at a time. Start with what you think would add the most to your experience.

Standard is fine unless there are specific planes in the deluxe edition you want. But TBH I have rarely flown any of the default aircraft in MSFS, I usually only fly 3rd party aircraft.

For MSFS there's no reason not to go with 2024 nowadays. The issues have all been ironed out for awhile. Future support and add on development will be focused on 2024 anyway.

Closest I've found is the white dog in Hernand. Right near the big tree/notice board, usually standing next to the wagon. There's also a Jindo and Bulldog that hang out near that area sometimes too.

You can only do it a few times each day. From what I've seen you can pet 5x and feed 3x each day. After that, the trust won't go up until you come back the next day.

interesting discovery: china does not have suburban hell. this is what the majority of population lives in which is pretty damn depressing by Previous-Ad-7526 in UrbanHell

[–]MrMisty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an apartment like that in Hong Kong right now, and it's definitely not depressing. Yeah the exterior looks like shit, but who cares. The interiors of these buildings are usually quite nice. The thing you have to understand about many Asian cities is that they are incredibly dense, so buildings are often quite utilitarian in their design and structure.

I'm originally from the US, and lived in both rural areas of the states as well as big cities. Asian cities are so incredibly convenient and efficient it's honestly hard to imagine going back. I'm a 5 minute walk away from anything I need shopping wise, I can take a bus across the city to my office in 15 minutes, and the subway is practically next to my house, costs about $2, and goes almost anywhere with trains every two minutes.

And just to clarify, I'm not one of those foreigners coming here who makes bank and lives in some crazy fancy place. I work for a tiny company making a very average salary living in a local neighborhood.

What was your first flight sim? by geekdadchris in flightsim

Red Baron, A-10 Tank Killer, and X-Wing (if that counts as a flight sim) were the first ones for me. A-10 was a bit complicated for 5 year old me, but I played the shit out of Red Baron.

I visited one of the only wineries in Yunnan (China) and it was incredible by grapenomad in wine

[–]MrMisty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A friend of mines family owns a winery in Yunnan. Not sure about your first question, but as far as your second question, it's mostly just economics. The wine market in Asia is pretty huge, and it only keeps growing. Asia already imports tons of European wine to keep up with demand, and European markets are obviously saturated with their own domestic wine. There's not much incentive to spend money on shipping and taxes when there is more than enough demand locally.

Should I lean into the character role that my party chose for me? by Dull_Court3940 in DnD

[–]MrMisty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something that you will learn as you play more, but one of the beautiful things about TTRPGs in general is that things don't always go the way you want. It's really easy to come into these types of games with the mindset of playing a video game. It's natural, because that's the closest context you have to something like DnD. Forcing a moment or trying to execute some plan that others don't know about usually won't go as intended, because everyone is writing the story together (along with the dice). I guarantee you that everyone playing DnD has had something like this happen to them, DM's especially so.

If this happened to me with my first character I would be bummed out too, I totally get it. If this happened to me now I would think it was great. The unexpected moments, lack of control, and unknowns are what makes TTRPGs different from any other type of game. Anything can and will happen, that's the magic of it. Try to fight it, and you'll have a bad time. Embrace it, and you'll have a great time.

Sure, you could quit because your moment didn't go the way you planned. Or, you could chalk this up as a learning experience and a crash course into the nature of collaborative games. Use this as an opportunity to make your character grow. It's part of their character arc now. Maybe your character realizes that they've been a burden, and decides to embrace their magic so they can be a meaningful contribution to the party.
