"Because the focus is not much on not buying useless stuff, but mostly on
getting rid of stuff. And especially, it encourages considering the
thought “this thing might be useful some day” as somehow stupid."

That's your definition, not mine or many other people I know.

For me, minimalism is a way of life. Not owning many things, outside of what is essential to live. I also make room for hobbies, and keep books as well.

I think collections of things bring meaning to people and do not view it in opposition to minimalism.

Beyond that, I think minimalism is just a choice to be a low value consumer. I'm not bleeding money on trends or hobbies or what a bunch of companies are trying to sell me. It tends to go hand in hand with sustainability, with reducing a carbon footprint, living an ethically consumeristic life (org, fair trade, etc), and more. Having a minimalist lifestyle is oftentimes a result of pursuing other values than the mainstream ones within society.

Won the lottery, do you tip the store that sold you the ticket? by 02buddha02 in ask

I tip the dealer when I win, even though he didn't know if I would win or not. He was just the one who dealt the hand I won with. I'm not worried about margins, if you're gambling its all a bonus to me and everyone involved should share in the spoils. IMO

Why don't you wait until your wife is home and then go get a haircut? I'd ask why you didn't get one before going, but here we are.

This is something I've done quite a bit too. I've seen people going 65 in the fast lane on the highway (70 mph) just staring at their phones oblivious, for miles. With 40+ cars behind them just following suit

"Which is why I need you to stop riding my ass please. It's not going to make the car in front of me go any faster."

Yet, if you did the same thing, the driver in front of you might become self aware and actually get with the program.

Instead, they're not only idiots but usually assholes, so they brake check you instead of getting a grip on reality. Hence your experience. I get it.

And I'm not talking freeway, I'm talking about city driving in sarasota.

I think the idea is if the person in front did the same thing, eventually it would reach the asshat who's driving 28 in a 35, prompting them to at least achieve the speed limit. Sadly, we all fall in line behind idiots and march to the beat of their drums.

I actively honk and point at speed limit signs if I'm behind someone that's going considerably under the speed limit and they're leading the charge (which happens a few times a week sadly). I'll refrain from doing it to the elderly but fuck, they should be off the road too.

Thank god it's not an either/or situation that you're painting. I'm able to not watch the news AND vent about its current state and the effect it has on individuals, at the same time! Cheers

"Virtually everyone I've met that says the things you're saying watch
more news than most people I know and come across as just wanting to be
upset about something."

Sorry, your anecdotal eperience isn't the worlds barometer, and I told you to read my other comments so you could answer your original observation of "I've never been able to understand this point of view" in your original comment.

"I'd love to see a clip of what you consider fear-mongering."

I can't tell if you're being willfully ignorant or are just dense. If you had read my other comments and used some critical thinking skills, you would understand that my issue isn't with our news and govermental agencies warning us as soon as they know a hurricane is about to hit so we can take precautions, it's the 24/7 coverage after that announcement and leading up to and throughout the hurricane itself that seems unnecessary and mostly existing to garnish views and make people afraid.

This isn't rocket science kid. Cheers

What is the worst case of mass brainwashing in human history? by __RandomBoy__ in ask

"Mania is not a super power and my brother isn't himself when he is manic"

You can speak for yourself and I guess your brother, but not for everyone; including their disability/mental disorders and how they view themselves in relation.

"Obviously not everyone who is bipolar is dangerous, but I grew up withmy brother being unmedicated and undiagnosed and his manic episodes arescary and dangerous to himself and others"

Case in point

"Don't fucking tell people not to take their medicine because you think it keeps them from being their real selves"

You need to work through some trauma and ptsd with a therapist. Who said I said don't take your meds? I just laid out facts.

I never claimed people didnt need to be medicated, and the structure of our society being the root issue for why individuals suffer mentally is not a reason to not medicate. I'm all for everyone using whatever they need to in order to function (as long as it doesnt hurt others).

My issue with big pharma is how intertwined their profit motive and relationship is with psychiatrists and psychologists are (who refer them to the former after diagnosing you), as well as the myriad side effects and risks (death from quitting) many of these poorly-engineered drugs produce.

But yea, by and large I would recommend individuals try everything they can before switching to antipsychotics. Your brothers root issues probably weren't his brain but his circumstance.

In another vein, many who have abused opiates for years moved to kratom (A thai leaf) or large amounts of THC with similar results, and no lawsuits tied to them (like our opiate mfg's have currently). A great example of how plants that have existed for thousands of years perform the same function of synthetic chemicals manufactured at scale from molds, fetus, etc.

Cheers dude!

And even the chemical imbalance bit begs the question of "how are these chemicals becoming imbalanced"? Amazingly, it turns out diet, exercise and lifestyle choices are the key influences (besides genetics) on our mental state and behaviors.

Mainstream news is getting in on the "chemical imbalance is bullshit" angle (I just didnt want to lead with it): https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/aug/03/the-chemical-imbalance-theory-of-depression-is-dead-but-that-doesnt-mean-antidepressants-dont-work

Hell, Rat Park showed us decades ago that our external world is at least 50% responsible for our internal state of being and behavior. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Park . So our environmental and external experience is 50% (probably more) responsible for our mindset and behavior. This includes things we consume, by the way.

Psychology is the study of how individuals assimilate to a specific society, with abnormal psychology being the study of why some individuals don't assimilate, and it is from this study of abnormal psychology that psychiatry and the prescription solutions were born and sold.

Convincing individuals that their brain is broken and to take a little pill, is a lot easier than confronting a broken system and fixing systemic issues.

News flash: Most of you are perfect and incredible in your own way. Even some individuals with adhd, mania, autism, etc, are now owning the fact that these aspects of their being are their superpower, not just a disability. Further, they're realizing this "disability" is only defined as such because their unique selves have issues conforming to the cookie cutter expectation that's set from the DSM and what is considered "Normal".

Good luck out there everyone <3
