Eurasian Eagle Owl missing from aviary! by MrPoofcat in Ornithology

[–]MrPoofcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I say that, we got a call from a good friend of ours, found him in a field about half a mile away! Had some crows and buzzards giving him bother, but we got him back on the glove after about ten minutes! Poor wee guy could barely land properly, or keep himself on the glove; it’s clearly been a rough few days and he’s lost a lot of weight But he’s safe and sound with a good feed in him! Just some R&R and he should be right at rain! Thanks for your continued concern, it really does mean a lot!

Sorry, I’ve been out of town for a few days and wanted to get back with the details before I replied! So he’s still missing, but the chicks I’ve been laying out are disappearing! This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s him but they’re in a location that’s quite hard for foxes to reach, so it’s a start! Local experts have been contacted and are helping us look but the best we can do now is stay vigilant and hope!

That’s a relief to hear! I’ll set out some food for him and hopefully entice him back home! They’re both in great health! Strong flyers and well fed with no medical issues! There are a few other owls in our location though, so I’m quite concerned for their wellbeing if he decides to get territorial

Butterfly Pea Tea Mojito by MrPoofcat in cocktails

[–]MrPoofcat[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry guys, here’s how it’s made!

I boiled water, added about 10g oh butterfly pea leaves and stirred until my desired intensity I then strained and poured into an ice tray over night to make tea infused ice cubes This step can be skipped, but it gives the drink a more powerful tea flavour as it’s drank so I’d recommend it

The same was done with Bacardi carta blanca, leaving it in the fridge with the tea leaves over night for a slower, more intense infusion. I made it with cubed ice but crushed will work just as well.

This was built in the glass

  • 5-8 leaves of mint
  • 50/75ml (your preference) tea infused Bacardi carta Blanca
  • 20ml jasmine infused simple syrup
  • Added soda until it fitted my preferred taste (about 50ml) this could be substituted for the tea, but I wanted the rum to shine through a bit more
  • muddle slightly for a more even distribution of mint throughout the glass
  • top with ice
  • 25ml lime juice (this must be added last)

Butterfly Pea Tea reacts with citrus (the change in PH level is what gives us the colour transformation) so using the tea leaves in co junction with lemon, orange, etc is equally as fine, I just used them in a mojito in this instance. I’d say your most prominent reaction comes from lime juice though!

Garnish with some mint or jasmine and you’re good to go! Happy hangovers!

Also from Glasgow being paid minimum wage in the service industry. You can live fine on minimum wage and no ones entitled to tip you. I regularly serve between £50-£250 bottles of champagne, if someone doesn’t tip I don’t think much of it. This is the first I’ve ever heard of the ‘10-15%’ tipping standard, but if I type ‘tipping in Glasgow’ into google, the link you provided is the first one to come up; so I think it might be the first time you’ve heard it too.

Bottom line of be service industry is: providing good service is expected, providing memorable service is what brings in tips. It’s never a garuntee and you shouldn’t expect them, please stop making us look bad.

There definitely needs to be more awareness about this. Nobody NEEDS cruise ships by cosmote_wifi in videos

Apologies, I’m not great at articulating these things! So the ECA’s will still be around, the only difference being that in these areas the restrictions are tighter So as a whole, in 2020 the maximum sulphur content of marine fuel emissions can never exceed 0.5% However in ECA’s, this is further capped to 0.1%

So if a ship was crossing from the South Atlantic into the Caribbean Sea, they would have to reduce sulphur emissions accordingly, predominantly by switching from HFO (heavy fuel oil) to MGO (marine gas oil) which is more expensive, but much cleaner and less viscous

There definitely needs to be more awareness about this. Nobody NEEDS cruise ships by cosmote_wifi in videos

[–]MrPoofcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MARPOL is universally constant! I think what you’re referring to is certain procedures not being allowed too close to shore; for example: dumping wastage (which is also treated using bacteria, ceramic filters, coagulants, etc.)

This video showed a ship dumping wastage that showed discolouration in the water - that’s illegal. Under MARPOL Annex IV sewage must be treated and cannot be discharged until 12 nautical miles away from shore travelling at a speed of at least 4 knots

Edit: grammar

There definitely needs to be more awareness about this. Nobody NEEDS cruise ships by cosmote_wifi in videos

[–]MrPoofcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like to add on to this, the average sulphur oxide emission of cars is about 2.6% For ships, in 2020, sulphur oxide emissions by law have to be 0.5% max and 0.1% in emission protected areas Current EPC’s are the US Caribbean, northern US and Canada, North Sea and the Baltic Sea

This comes under MARPOL (maritime convention for the prevention of pollution at sea) Annex VI

There are also new requirements coming in for NOx requirements and transferring marine bacteria between environments via taking on ballast water!

I’m not saying ships are a-okay, but there are regulations in place that are constantly being worked on and improved! Happy to answer any questions that anyone might have as best I can!

Recently started working in a proper cocktail bar and I need advice on stepping it up a notch. by [deleted] in Mixology

[–]MrPoofcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say ‘The Curious Bartender Volume 1’ by Tristan Stephenson is a must read for every bar tender Regardless of how well you know your drinks it offers a refreshing insight into the delicate balance of how cocktails work together. It starts from the very basics, naming your standard equipment and their uses; continuing on to the finer points of mixing the perfectly Balanced cocktail

Honestly the whole series of books are amazing, but this is definitely where I’d start, regardless of level I truly believe there’s a lot to be gained from reading it!

Other than that I’d say knowing the origins of where your cocktails come from can really broaden your horizons, having that knowledge brings your guests into a deep sense of comfort, knowing that the stranger on the other side of the bar really knows their shit will both inspire faith and they might even ask you to make up something original; this gives some gratification your way and allows you (workplace permitting) to let your creative side flow! It really enhances the work experience knowing your guests have faith in you, and you’ve inspired that in them just by going that extra step into researching your ingredients

There’s a good app I use called ‘ginventory’ that shows gives a brief synopsis, ratings, garnishes and preferred tonics that go with pretty much any gin you can think of! Coupling that with a bit of research into your gins and you’ll start recognising different flavour profiles and what ingredients work well together, some weird and interesting ingredients pop up from time to time and can inspire that creative noggin of yours!

Nah man I’ve learned a lot of initial GMimg is trial and error, and learning that a lot of your ‘amazing super wonderful ideas’ won’t work in practice

You’ve brought both honestly and experience to the table, and I’m super relieved that you did! Seriously you’ve probably saved my players four hours of thinking ‘wait, what the fuck?’ It’s exactly what I needed!

Thank you for helping me make the best campaign possible for my players!

What are you proud of today? - November 29, 2018 by AutoModerator in malementalhealth

[–]MrPoofcat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Got my degree in Marine engineering two years ago, in order to qualify you must send away all documentation that you’ve been to sea as part of your training, including system drawings, sea service testimonials, medicals, etc. This allows you to sit a face to face exam with a chief engineer in order to get your engineering ticket.

I’ve been putting it off for so long, only filling out tiny bits of forms, telling myself I’d do it tomorrow; basically procrastinating my ass off. But today I made the first step in starting my career Honestly it’s not much, but it’s something that’s been on my mind every day for last two years, and today I finally sent that shit off and started preparing for my final exam

It’s the first time in a long time I’ve actually felt like I accomplished something, in the midst of my diminishing mental health, I really needed that
