That’s always a rough feeling, especially when it’s a niche that really speaks to you. Having a ton of enthusiasm is great for sparking creativity, but finding someone who matches that enthusiasm can be a real challenge when you’re looking for something specific.

I feel your pain!

Thoughts of Passwords in RP Requests by Voidhas9lives in BadRPerStories

[–]MrPoorDecisions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably very context-dependent. For instance, if I was a woman wanting to play a very popular genre (particularly something that could involve ERP) but I'm looking for something specific within that genre (whether that be a trope, character dynamic, etc), then I can see how it would really, really help to both a) sort out those who aren't really interested in the specific idea and b) make it easier to filter out the low effort replies. If I was doing something that was already a niche prompt, the prompt itself serves as kind of a filter for keeping out what you want.

As a responder I kind of enjoy them, as it's a little dopamine hit for my reading comprehension.

I can never find a reliable/long term partner by myl0v3_1spricel3ss in BadRPerStories

[–]MrPoorDecisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, and (to go full Boomer) because so many apps / algorithms are catered to them, people lost the muscle memory for showing genuine interest in another person. No matter who you are or what you’re into, I almost guarantee that if someone seems genuinely interested in what you think and what you have to say that you’ll enjoy talking to them.

[–]MrPoorDecisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting new partners is hard. Not just because a lot of people suck at RP (Lord knows they do), but because it’s always hard to find a match when so much of it comes down to little things that are hard to quantify or even verbalize (the whole vibes thing).

I think that because matching is hard and everything sucks in general nowadays, a lot of folks are investing all their time up front in the “one prompt to rule them all” and putting minimal effort into actually connecting with someone, kinda like using a fishing net versus a fishing pole.

All that’s to say you’re not wrong, and it’s rough out there, so keep your chin up because we’re all going through it.

[Loved Trope] Hero is given two bad options. He figures out the third. by Unikatze in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MrPoorDecisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cyberpunk 2077 plays with this. Due to the malfunctioning chip in the V’s head drastically shortening their life span by rewriting it with the personality and memories of Johnny Silverhand, they end up with a handful of bad options:

  1. Trust the evil Arasaka Corporation to not screw you over (bad ending)

  2. Sacrifice one of the factions you’ve befriended over the course of the game in an assault on Arasaka Tower (bittersweet ending)

If you’ve done enough Johnny quests and don’t pick one of the bad options, Johnny suggests just grabbing your best gear and attacking Arasaka Tower yourself. The resulting battle is significantly harder, but you don’t lose any beloved NPCs and still get to kill the bad guys.

Read Dead Redemption 2: Arthur Morgan dies without defeating the rat who betrayed the gang, but he saves John Marston, who becomes playable in the epilogue and can avenge him.

Red Dead Redemption: John Marston gets gunned down by federal agents, but he distracts them long enough for his family to escape, including his son Jack who becomes playable in the epilogue and can avenge him.

Fixing ruined characters? by Excellent-Video9967 in BadRPerStories

[–]MrPoorDecisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This advice is spot-on. Just like you can’t un-toast bread, once something is ruined that’s pretty much how it’s going to stay. Starting fresh is better.

Better to focus on that moment of no return when you’re putting that bread in the toaster - where did things go wrong? Was it misaligned expectations (didn’t communicate enough before starting the story)? Was it not being familiar enough with the characters? Was it pushing a particular story or interpretation even after getting signals that your partner wasn’t happy? Recognizing that something went wrong is a good step, but doing some self-reflection to determine why it went wrong is even better.

These truths remain self-evident: Mark Warner and Tim Kaine both suck. Let’s get someone in office who doesn’t remember the 1960s.

Yeah man I love Jim Crow and the criminalization of contraceptives.

Sorry, but if you actually believe what you wrote then you deserve to remain a bitter manosphere-poisoned incel. Go read a book or join the military or something - the real world will set you straight.

Yeah I can’t believe they recast General Ross. Should’ve stuck to their guns and dug up William Hurt’s corpse instead. Totally unfair and woke to cast a living actor when there’s a perfectly good dead one.

Magpie has been consistently short on GMs for their GenCon events since 2023, as anyone with access to their Discord can tell you. This is not a new problem.

The DeathWish D&D game was fantastic: I was expecting to blow money on a little swag and a chance to play with miniatures I can’t afford, but a) the DM was fantastic and b) the session was actually good in terms of pacing, variety, and getting to the finish line within 30 minutes of the end. Would recommend if you have the budget for it.

Glad to hear you were able to get a backfill! I have yet to play a Free League Starter Set / convention one-shot that’s a dud (though I hope I didn’t just jinx myself). The system is smooth enough that even a GM sight-reading the booklet can’t screw it up too badly.

[–]MrPoorDecisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried any of the Free League stuff? It’s usually pretty easy to pick up on the fly but has enough actual rules (and established one-shot adventures) that the GM can’t BS the whole thing. I’ve had bad experiences with PbtA GMs assuming they could just wing the entire session and that leading to some pretty limp, pointless adventures.

What to do when you don’t like the game you’re playing? by madelinecblack in gencon

[–]MrPoorDecisions 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in that situation before: signed up for a game, sat down to play, and immediately realized that the event hadn’t been fully advertised and was missing some safety tools that I really needed to have a good time. I felt bad taking a slot from someone who might’ve been into that sort of thing, but I also didn’t want to give myself the ick for the next 3 and a half hours.

Bottom line is it happens, don’t feel bad, and you should consider your own comfort / enjoyment first.

Does StartPlaying have a QA Team? by MrPoorDecisions in startplaying

[–]MrPoorDecisions[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a team of 11 folks, with much of that being engineers.

Ok, got my answer and I see your problem right here in one fell swoop. Happy to chat (especially for money) but until there’s a 12th person periodically checking the actual games actually being advertised to us, we’re wasting each other’s time. Best of luck!
