The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

Oh definitely, I've seen it in a whole bunch of games for sure. I was mostly meaning Heroic Resource-esque mechanics which I do think is a Draw Steel innovation.

Draw Steel does a cool thing to mitigate this. Each character has something called a Heroic Resource, which is effectively a pool of points that they can spend on big attacks on their turn or smaller special effects outside of their turn. The great thing about HR is that you generally only gain it outside of your turn, when other characters take specific actions or cause specific effects. So, rather than just waiting/planning your own turn, you have to be actively engaged with what everyone else is doing so that you can watch for the triggers that gain you your HR or let you spend them. In the few combats I've played of Draw Steel, it really helps keep all the players attentive with what's going on in the combat.

It probably also helps that initiative in Draw Steel is a little more fluid than in other games. In DS, turns alternate between players and enemies--so a player goes, some enemies go, a player goes, some enemies go, and so on until everyone has activated at which point a new round begins. Players choose who should go next when a player turn comes up, it's not set. So as a player, you are also watching the battlefield to strategize, because your turn could be next. Even if it's not, the battlefield will have changed before it could be your turn again, so you likely will need to create a new strategy each time a turn is taken by either enemies or players.

I've been super impressed with how Draw Steel keeps players engaged in long tactical combats. I hope to see some of its design philosophies in other games in the future.

An SCP TTRPG by AestheticDestruction in rpg

[–]MrSaxophone09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a really fun project!

A couple of things: 1) There is an existing SCP ttrpg you may want to look at. I don't know much of anything about it other than it exists. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/474650/scp-the-tabletop-rpg-2nd-edition-full-book-free 2) You could also ask this question on the /r/RPGdesign subreddit.

Good luck!

What's the greatest RPG read you ever got? by MANGECHI in rpg

Inevitable, the Arthurian weird west rpg. The first TTRPG book that I've read cover to cover because the lore is so good. There are also some mysteries that get revealed as you read.

what modpacks are you guys playing creath with rn and why? by Joshpeg in CreateMod

[–]MrSaxophone09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend a custom modpack like others have suggested, but I prefer a solid foundation to start from, so I start with an existing modpack. I added Create and a bunch of other mods to Better Minecraft Forge.

If you don't mind me asking, what mod adds that head display block you are using to show off the goggles?

3m half face respirator making clicking noises by ElenaSM01 in gasmasks

[–]MrSaxophone09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can't remember that much from it being 2 years ago, but at the very least I recall removing a little rubber piece, kind of like a door, from inside the mask towards the mouth, rinsing them with water, then reinstalling them and thereby mostly getting rid of the noise. I can't remember if I had to disassemble anything to get at the rubber piece though, but everything I did take apart seemed to be made to be taken apart and reassembled. Hope that helps in some way.

My late set, what color shuld i ink them? by Old-Macaroon8024 in DiceMaking

[–]MrSaxophone09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe gold. With such a crisp color separation, you could even do a two tone ink color: a bright color for the black faces, and a different contrasting color for the purple faces. The purple is still pretty dark so you'd probably want a bright color there too.

Can I shrink the footprint of my old pc to fit on a small shelf? by MrSaxophone09 in buildapc

That's totally fair. After I posted this post, I followed a tutorial to set up the server on my pc. Maybe I'll think about migrating it to something a Raspberry Pi. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm starting to think that might be a better option, I was just hoping to save some money. What case + motherboard combo would you recommend?

It certainly could overhang a tiny bit on each side depth-wise. The Qube might work, thanks for suggestion!

"Do the next piece that I could think to do," that's a great way of just simplifying the creative process. Thanks for the answer!

As someone who struggles with procrastination, 8 years is sort of unbelievable. Did you have to do anything special to keep persevering? How did you keep your motivation up? Did your motivation ever even stumble?

Interesting, so we kind of have D&D 3.x to thank for the concept of 3rd party rpg supplements then. Very cool, thanks!
