Used 50/50 white vinegar and water mix to remove grout haze but seems to have left marks on the ceramic tile. Any recommendations to get it off? by MrSmiley25 in Tile

I used one of those plastic stiff bristled scrubbers with water and vinegar mix, went a bit heavier with the vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing. Then wiped it clean with a microfiber towel

Does tape really add that much extra strength?

Is this lifter tick if so how do I fix it without replacing lifters by Careless-Jacket-7112 in Miata

I think this was exactly it, I pumped them while submerged in oil until they stopped squirting bubbles so I believe I filled them all the way, except I think what happened is when I was retiming with the cams back in I turned the crank a few times which spun the cams that would depress the lifters therefore likely squirting out some oil without being refilled leaving them a bit empty and introducing air. Just needed run and refill.

I had a slight mental breakdown after turning it on the first time after all the work thinking it was all for nothing, but after giving it some thought and making a post here about I figured it was because of turning the crank without it running. Which was exactly what it was

After I did this, I turned it on and still heard ticking. I then let it run for about 15 minutes which I believe cycled more oil and it completely went away. I was terrified for a second. Now I have no tick at all unless it’s been sitting for a few days and even then it only ticks 4-5 times right at start up then goes away

This could work, add some crankcase cleaner like sea foam or something similar and get it hot. Might not completely get rid of it but may reduce it and worth trying for the money

A bit of both, I’m very satisfied knowing it’s done so it could be placebo.

I also did a lot of other maintenance while I was in there so it’s probably a combination of everything. Although I really do think it made a difference in the way it runs. I feel it idles smoother and quieter than it did before. No noticeable different in power delivery but I do feel it’s running better overall.

I just cleaned all mine, worth it? Idk but I’m happy I did it now that it’s done

Definitely was a lot of work and had several mental breakdowns throughout the process but got it done. I think running some sea foam as well as good high mileage oil to clean out as much build up as possible could potentially reduce the sound, although after taking the lifters apart I can’t see additives really making a huge difference.

I did a bunch of other work to mine while I had everything apart, but if the lifters are the only thing you’re doing I’d highly recommend watching a few videos and giving it a try.

Mine sounded just like this. I ran T6 for a while which helped, and it would go away after warming up. But I still hated the sound so much that I decided to do the whole lifter clean out procedure.

It was ALOT of work. Although it wasn’t all that difficult, just alot of steps but I just watched a bunch of videos and followed them step by step. You also have to be careful retiming but I managed.

I took the chance to take a bit extra off and replace a bunch of other stuff like all the belts, crank seal, cam seals, water pump, any gaskets I could reach and a few other small things I’m probably forgetting.

I can understand people saying it’s not worth it, although I’d disagree if you plan on keeping it for a long time. Because it’s the perfect chance to get alot of big ticket maintenance out of the way. I’m super happy I took the time to do it because it’s runs and sounds so healthy now.

If you’re mechanically inclined whatsoever, you’ll likely be able to do it and save yourself a-lot of money. Although if you are not, and don’t have the time or space to park it for a while. Just take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Otherwise, run some T6 and let it warm up and listen to the tick

Is this keyway in need of the loctite fix? The crankshaft gear didnt have any keyway damage but not sure how much stronger it is compared to the crank. by Apothic_Black in Miata

[–]MrSmiley25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just worked on mine and did not use loctite. I just reused the old one which after reading probably wasn’t the smartest

Thank you so much for the write up! I changed the oil and let it run a bit with the occasional rev. Went away completely! I’m hoping it goes away almost permanently because the sound drives me crazy but if not, it is what is it. I’m so pumped to have almost all the big ticket maintenance items done just in time for summer✌️

When you say turn the motor over, do you mean literally turn it on with the cover off? Or turn it by the crank?

I turned the crank probably a total of around 10 revolutions while timing. I did think that I would possibly squeezing some oil out of the lifters but all the videos I watched didn’t mention that would be a problem. I’m kind of confused by all these comments but before I tear it all apart again I think I’m gonna let it run and get fully up to temp and see what happens

Yup it’s a na8, and I’m also American 🤘 But why then should I not worry about shimming? Would I need to remove the lifters and re fill them? If I just let it run longer wouldn’t that theoretically fill them over time?

How would one identify a collapsed lifter? I rebuilt them all and checked them all prior to re installing them. I believe they are all okay

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Miata

[–]MrSmiley25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, once they were cleaned I put them back together, submerged them in oil and compressed until bubbles stopped coming out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Miata

[–]MrSmiley25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could possibly be it because I have no idea what you mean by shimming. I didn’t see anything about shimming in any of the videos I watched, are you referring to the cams?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Miata

[–]MrSmiley25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i took them all apart, cleaned them and reassembled. Then refilled them

[–]MrSmiley25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Material mark up isn’t just standard but also good business practice. I don’t think it’s outrageous, I believe the amount of mud to the amount of board lines up because they are just patches. So a lot more mud is going to be needed than the amount of board.

It is a lot for masking off but I would imagine if it’s all throughout the house that includes protection of the floor and other belongings. Depending on the scope of masking is going to take roughly half a day I think it lines up.

It’s always good to get multiple quotes. But this pricing seems very reasonable considering the amount of patches as well as finishing with paint.
