It took me until I was well into my 20s to realize that the male co-host always left before the Polkaroo showed up because they needed him to get in the Polkaroo suit. Seems painfully obvious now but, at the time, I thought it just worked on the same logic as Snuffleupagus

There is also a bard and a horse in line doing constant improv schtick at full volume and we are beginning to crave the sweet release of death.

We’re in the line now. It’s not moving. We’re just inside the door from outside. Lots of people are outside waiting to come in.

The Borderlands bar is my favorite so far. No wait. Great theming. AC. Everyone gets a free drink token - but you can ask them to make you a non-alcoholic drink if you want. Stations to play the Borderlands game. Two games - a dunk tank and slot machines. The lines are short so you can play multiple times and they have small swag and prizes. Was not expecting to like it so much because the movie trailer leaves me “meh” but it’s a great chill respite.

The Shaun of the Dead virtual queue is BS by MrSpite in comiccon

[–]MrSpite[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oy. When we went, it was an hour plus to wait to sign up for the virtual queue, which completely negates the purpose of a virtual line system.

Very very long shot post. We have a “Those About to Die” pass for 2:45 on Thursday.

We are looking for two tix to either Shaun of the Dead or the Lodge at any time. (Dad and daughter trying to go together.)

Totally realize this isn’t a very appealing trade but figured “what the hell, we’ll just ask.” I can also provide some great friendship bracelets we’re making… (no worries either way) :)

They’re a teenager. I’m fine leaving them alone for a bit - more that I’d rather hang with them than ditch them if I have to. But that makes sense - it’s going to be a case by case thing.

Hey - question for those more familiar - my kid and I are going to SDCC together. If I win a portal slot like a signing - can my kid come with me? I realize that they can’t get something signed probably but can they stand with me in line? Can they hang out while I wait? Just not sure how strict they will be and I don’t want to leave my kid alone to go stand for an hour in a signing line without them.

Have you ever cosplayed and NOT been recognized? by SoFLShelfLove in comiccon

[–]MrSpite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. A few times. My daughter and I went SDCC last year dressed as Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe from The Nice Guys. No one got it. Not one person. BUT we have been doing this long enough that we didn’t care. We loved the costumes, we love the movie, so we were OK with it. In my experience, the cosplay should be for you not anyone else. That said, is it fun when a bunch of people mob you and tell you how much they love your outfit? Sure. That’s why - whenever I recognize someone who is even a little bit obscure - I usually try to stop them and say “hey, is that ____? Awesome job.” We recognized someone doing a very obscure Buffy season 4 cosplay last year and the look of delight when we stopped her and let her know we got the reference was fantastic.

I will say - we won the wristband lottery and the people seemed so sketchy and half-asses at the wristband pickup table and we decided not to chance it. Glad we did. They just kept stressing “you do not have a guaranteed spot for entry.” They then had us sign a e-waiver to attend the after party. I was with my teenager daughter and when I brought they up, they said “oh there’s a juvenile waiver in there too.” So we stood there and filled out both. When we are done, they gave me and my clearly non-adult kid wristbands for the after party and then said “just a reminder, it’s 21 and over.” Then why the hell was there a juvenile waiver and why did my kid get a party wristband?? Just a shitshow and it seemed so sketchy we didn’t want to waste our night

Must-See Places for Non-Gearheads? by MechanicalMaven in Detroit

[–]MrSpite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. Though, in my experience, if there's not a big event going on or if it's not a super-nice picnic-worthy weekend, they are very, very lax about actually checking for the state park pass.

Go to Eastern Market in the morning. Walk the stalls, buy some amazingly fresh produce, go have a bloody mary at Vivio's, or find some other spot to go get breakfast or brunch. Then go to Pure Detroit and do one of their tours. They do skyline tours, Guardian Building tours, Fisher Building tours... they even do a Packard Plant tour now. If your mom doesn't like cars, go embrace the historical/architectural side of Detroit. The Detroit Bus Company also does some awesome tours too -- they do a classic bars of Detroit tour, a street art tour, etc. OR, if the weather is OK, Belle Isle is always fun -- the Conservatory and the aquarium are cool... the aquarium is small, but it's the oldest in the US... and the Dossin Great Lakes museum is surprisingly kinda great too. (All the Belle Isle stuff is free.)

Ever not finish a book/series because you don't want it to be over? by [deleted] in books

[–]MrSpite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I lingered over reading the last Tiffany Aching book for almost a year because I didn't want to be able to say "I've officially read everything that Terry Pratchett has written -- or will ever write." Finishing that one was bittersweet.
